When the Tonkens demand interest, Bert plans a money-making Spanish evening suggested by Eleanor. But Eleanor not only annoys Louisa and Martin by farming their baby out to an irresponsible young girl, she also keels over with a hernia, requiring Martin to perform emergency surgery. Eccentric Mrs. Dingley, who runs a cat sanctuary, is also in debt to the Tonkens but Penhale proves himself to be an unexpected hero in getting the greedy pair to back off. Martin, meanwhile, is more perturbed than he lets on about Louisa's decision after their row to stay in Cornwall with James and not accompany him to London.—don @ minifie-1
- It's time for Bert Large to pay the piper and return the £1000 plus interest that he borrowed from loan shark Alastair Tonken. Eleanor learns of his problem and suggests they organize a Spanish-themed night but after cooking up a storm in Bert's kitchen, falls seriously ill requiring Martin to make an emergency operation. Bert has also told Al of his predicament and he decides to use the £800 Ruth Ellingham gave him to buy fencing for the farm to pay back at least part of the loan. They'll still have to deal with Tonken and his thug of a son, Norman. Meanwhile, Louisa has moved in with her mother Eleanor and Martin has decided that he will be returning to London alone. He's certain however that he's seen James' pram being pushed around the village by one of the teenage girls.—garykmcd

She desperately needs the money to continue to look after the cats and kittens in her care. Bert is also being chased by loan sharks Alastair Tonken and his son Norman for the repayment of £1,000 they gave him to clear his debts, warning of repercussions if he doesn't pay up. Mrs Tishell's infatuation for Martin increases, encouraged by his continued separation from Louisa. Martin, assisted by Morwenna, performs an emergency hernia operation on Louisa's mother Eleanor and saves her life when the ambulance's arrival is delayed.
