Love the story but...
tnicgee-331728 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ok.. I love all the things this show and script has to offer but one thing is driving me bananas. She is supposedly 49 with a 16 year old daughter. However, clearly the flashbacks have her pregnant as an early 20s woman grieving. Do the math... she'd have to been 33 when she had Rae. This mishap by producers and/or screenwriter throws the whole timeline off for me. Perhaps I missed something.. I don't know. But if I am following this correctly, the timeline is completely skewed and makes zero sense.

With that being said, I do think it's beautifully acted and the younger version of herself is amazing. As is Kathryn.

Hit me like a wave
sachaa-hart21 April 2023
Imperfectly perfect series. Life is messy, life is hard, life is made of choices. Life is pain, life is love.

It was so, so, so beautifully acted. Kathryn Hahn and Sarah Pidgeon blew my breath away, they deliver flawless and unforgetablle performances.

Also, they really nailed with it with the sountrack.

What a ride. A whole lot of feels after finishing this series in a binge row. It will stay in my mind for a long time.

I still am left with a bunch of questions but I almost don't care. Some moments were flat, but I almost don't care. I almost want a second season and I almost don't want it.

Passed the time
sarahmattina14 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I watched until the end to be fair. Here I am, partially regretting my decision. Merritt made it all worth it, that's all I can really say. Clare was insufferable past and present and I just can't get past an unlikable main character. Maybe more backstory to explain why she had a colossal chip on her shoulder would have been helpful?

The story itself was pretty common/relatable but hard to follow. I was puzzled/irritated by Clare's first husband and how that came about but we didn't even learn that piece until what, episode 6/7?

The acting was decent. The Amy and Danny characters were great. Rae started off insufferable but hard to blame her with such an irritating mother and by the end, I quite enjoyed her. How Danny put up with Clare all those years is the real mystery.

Dear Sugar, I'll take the book.
Techmama6810 April 2023
This show is based on the book by the same name, a collection of Dear Sugar letters answered (originally anonymously) by Cheryl Strayed. Anyone familiar with Cheryl's work knows her life story and will recognize the real parts of her story in this show. About half the show is a Strayed biography and half is fiction. The overdubbed real letters are original and beautiful. Cheryl is an extremely gifted writer and advice giver, and she based her Dear Sugar advice on her own life experiences. The show creates a fictional narrative of a woman's messy life partially based on a real woman's messy life, incorporating the letters into the narrative. Although clever and well executed, the parts of the show don't completely add up. But the book is amazing, and given the choice between the book or the show I would definitely choose the book.

Excellent series
debb-349188 April 2023
Cannot say enough about Kathryn Hahn. She is one of my favorite actresses from back when I first saw her on How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Amazing actress.

If you've lost your mom, this series might be tough emotionally. It was for me.

Merritt Wever's character made me want to be a better mother. She needs to be in more films! She was great in Nurse Jackie and fabulous in this.

Thoroughly enjoyed this series. It was thought provoking, heart wrenching, so many different emotions. It left me rethinking my own life and realizing I am not living my best life. Its difficult but if you want more only you can make it happen..

This is a must watch!

Mediocre with Some Good
valgal-905828 July 2023
This series mirrors Cheryl Strayed's real life with a few variations. It has a lot of similarities to one of my all time favorite movies/books, "Wild", by Cheryl Strayed. However, the direction is subpar and the screen writers constant switching from past to present is mind numbing at times. In my mind, Reese Witherspoon perfectly personified Cheryl, so it's hard for me to wrap my head around anyone else playing her. Don't get me wrong, I love Hahn, but I feel her true character gets lost in the shoddy direction and bad screen writing. Also, Laura Dern will always be Cheryl's beautiful, kind, thoughtful mom; The flashback mom in Tiny Beautiful Things tries hard to relay that same beauty, but falls short unfortunately. The series is entertaining and maybe if I haven't seen Wild 10 times and read the book twice, I would find it better (or maybe worse??) but in my mind nothing compares to the portrayal of Cheryl's life like Wild.

Kathryn Hahn shoulders a heavy load and shines
paul-allaer8 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As Episode 1 of "Tiny Beautiful Things" (2023 release; 8 episodes of about 30 min. Each) opens, Clare is on her way home, drunk after being a retirement party. When she gets home, she is locked out but she manages to get in via an open window, only to find her husband and her teenage daughter asking why she is here. Clare had forgotten that her husband had kicked her out just days earlier... At this point we are less than 10 minutes into Episode 1...

Couple of comments: this is the TV adaptation of the book of the same name by Cheryl Strayed ("Wild"), and like that film, this TV mini-series is executive produced by Reece Witherspoon (and from seeing the closing credits, it looks like this was pretty much an all-female production), I haven't read the book so I can't comment how closely this series sticks to the book. What I can say is that this is a pretty emotionally heavy series, focusing on now 49 yr old Clare and then in flashbacks on Clare in her early 20s, and all of the motional baggage Clare is carrying right now, and was all those years ago. Let's be clear: Kathryn Hahn, like the character Clare also 49 years old in real life, shoulders a heavy lead in this TV series, and shines along the way. The support cast, including Quentin Plair as her husband Danny, Tanzyn Crawford as her 16 yo daughter., and last but not least Sarah Pidgeon as her younger self, are equally up to the task,

"Tiny Beautiful Things" premiered on Hulu this weekend, and all 8 episodes are now streaming. I watched the first 4 episodes last night, and will watch the remaining 4 episodes later today or tomorrow. If you are interested in a female character-heavy mini-series, I'd readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion.

UPDATE I've now see all episodes. I've upped my rating to 8 stars. This is an outstanding series that just got better along the way. The last (8th) episode was just gut-wrenching.

Don't understand the time line.
moneybram27 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I find this series a muddled mess with some good things sprinkled in every now and again.

Hawn is good, but her character is extremely annoying if that makes sense.

How is she 49 and the actress playing her younger self 33??? If her daughter is 16. She had a child just out of school it looks like? So confused with flashbacks coming at random and plot points never talked about. Heroine addict?

I really wanted to like it. There are certain moments that work but they are just overshadowed by a train-wreck of a person that is so unlikeable it is hard to root for her in any way.

It was an extremely frustrating watch.

Grieving is very hard to accept.
hugofilipe208 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Born, Live, and Die.

The Tiny Beautiful Things is very dark and sad but funny at the same time.

One of the most feared feelings is grieving.

Clare is always connected to her mother's grief, now and in the past.

The series begins very dramatic and dark, even depressing, but the performances are extraordinary.

Anyone who doesn't like drama shouldn't watch this series, but I put together wonderful actresses and excellent production.

There are some very funny moments that cut and smooth the drama. However, what I liked the most was the transition between Clare's past and present.

In this miniseries, Kathryn Hahn shows off her talent and raises the bar a great deal.

Merrit Wever is an actress I admire for her versatility and expressions that overflow my emotions.

Sarah Pigeon is the biggest surprise and what a surprise. Her performance is remarkable, and with inexplicable maturity and projection, she will have a bright future.

I recommend this mini-series. I give it a 9.

Worst First 20 min of any TV series but..
reviv-3830419 June 2023
The start of this TV series is incredibly confusing, making it difficult to follow. The writing is poorly executed, and only those with an optimistic outlook might be able to endure it. However, there is a glimmer of hope that emerges later on as the writing improves slightly. Many discussions about the fragmented script are warranted, as there is a lack of likable characters in the show. It's challenging to form a connection with them, and when you do start to feel sorry for them, they disappoint you with their nonsensical actions that make you think they deserve their own consequences.

While the occasional use of an out-of-order narrative can be effective, in this case, it creates an unrealistic portrayal of the main character's mother. She is depicted as perfect, which could be interpreted as the protagonist's idealized memory rather than reality. Nevertheless, the entire story feels disjointed, with disconnected elements such as the brother, mother, father, and rebellious daughter. It simply fails to come together in a cohesive manner, leaving the audience feeling unfulfilled. It's a chaotic mess that relies too heavily on excessive swearing, sex, and unmet expectations.

Beautiful show
rachergrant13 April 2023
I loved this show. I couldn't stop watching, watched all 8 episodes in one night. Beautiful show, emotional, relatable, well done. Don't listen to these negative reviews. A lot left unsaid but I hope they create a second season. A lot of depth to each character and the backstory of the lead makes you truly understand her trauma and the choices she's made. Her growth at the end!!! And her husband taking online advice and not knowing who it truly is!! Seriously such a great show. I love Katherine Hahn. And the actress that plays her young adult version was great too. Overall must watch. Others are haters 😅

Could be great
ljones-4766930 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Here's the thing about this show: the book is definitely tacked onto another show. The storyline looks at the life and history of a middle-aged woman, Clare, who has had experienced a lot of adversities in her past, her husband, and her teenage daughter. The show jumps to Clare's past, which is quite dark in parts, such as coping poorly with her mother's death and dealing with a heroine addiction, to the present as she tries to pull her life together. In the present, she is recruited on a voluntary basis to be an agony aunt, and each episode addresses the themes of a new problem letter for Clare to answer.

Clare's life and the explorations of relationships around her are interesting enough. It feels like the Dear Sugar parts were shoehorned into the show, as the tone can jump from teenage Clare openly grieving and coping with her pain through sex, to adult Clare writing a response which is usually ripe with sentiment. It feels like the show is trying to be like This Is Us without striking a good balance of tone and storytelling.

I would like the show if it didn't include the Dear Sugar sections. Without them, it makes for an entertaining dramedy. With them, it just doesn't work.

Muddled Mess
Bad_Penguin8 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I thought the show started off well and I was intrigued enough to move onto the next episode despite a few narrative oddities (all those muddled flashbacks were probably designed to give you insight into Clare's character but were just super confusing because young Clare always looked 18 despite some flashbacks being set in her late twenties). But honestly, you get to the end of this show and you feel like the last episode is not a finale at all. What has changed? What journey has she truly been on? Yeah I guess she somewhat sorted her relationship with her daughter out, but barely and meanwhile her husband is or isn't cheating on her with the therapist?? A storyline that's foreshadowed early on then completely abandoned for the rest of the show...

This show was a mess of flashback scenes that start making sense once you realize the actress playing young Clare is a vampire and thus never ages. Actually wait, I might just have cracked the code there. Maybe this entire show was about vampires and no one's clocked it. What about the time she was addicted to drugs? Was that before her mom's death or after?! And when did she ever divorce her first husband and why and was that before or after she met her new one?! MAKE IT MAKE SENSE.

The whole coming to terms with the death of a loved one plot is good and thoughtful but it's being let down by everything else.

Overrated
ealander23 April 2023
This is one of those shows that make me think there are many fake reviews on here. This show is definitely not 10, or even a 9, or 8. I watched it because of Reese Witherspoon, Cheryl Strayed, and I like the lead actress. However, the main character is just such an unlikeable head case. She is miserable, has a chip on her shoulder, and blames everyone but herself for her problems. I felt sorry for her daughter having such an embarrassing train wreck of a mother. She was a jerk to her best friend and cheated on her husband. It just wasn't believable that her hot husband wouldn't have divorced her much, much sooner.

The writing! The poetry! The music!
thejdrage9 April 2023
The writing! The poetry! The music! The art of the acting and mixing of it all together to a perfect musical pitch that carries you away with it and then, with that perfect pitch, rips your heart and make you weep.

This series hits all my buttons: losing my younger beloved, brilliant, kind brother to lung cancer as I view this; lost a mother too soon.

The major problems for me - and costing a star - was the age discrepancies. The Hahn character is supposed to be super young when she has Francis Rae, but the age makes the Hahn character 33 when she had her daughter. Also, to me, the mother seemed to die when she was terribly young. However, Frankie, the mother, was played brilliantly.

What I liked about this series was that while it a deep and dark, there's good comedy interwoven to keep us from getting to far in the pits. Well worth the watch!!

It's hard to watch
mhbjc24 April 2023
So many F bombs, needless sex scenes, and excuses galore! I have not found this to be a comedy. Has Holllywood changed the definition of comedy and I missed the headline? I found myself yelling at the character "Loser" (at all phases of her life). Starting with the story she couldn't pull off one 5 page paper to graduate college? And then she will add it to the 1000 complaints about how bad life can be? Seems to me her mom knew her. Wanna bet a mom like that would have made her promise to finish her studies or engage someone at the school (she also attended) to help her?

It's hard to care about the characters with all the screaming and whining. The term 'arrested development comes to mind. Does anyone still think their dead loved one is still in a particular spot? Even after 30 years, and you moved on? News Flash: There is no need to dig mom 's ashes and take her with you. We carry them in our heart! AND then we see they were not even buried in a box. She literally poured the ashes on the ground. How much dirt was she willing to take to accomplish this insane gesture? (Answer: 5 gallons.)

The one scene where they get the daughter to go into school... would have been a huge celebration. They said nothing and the mom barely smiled. These people are sad-sacks.

I have not watched the full season. I am hoping once we are passed the shock value of her poor decision making...that the conversations will improve the character interactions. If it gets better or I even laugh once, I'll consider revising this review.

This is not the first movie with Reese Witherspoon's involvement where the women come off insane or unable to cope. She's made several in fact. I hope one day, she meets a creative role model to inspire her to develop a show about a woman of substance.

Healing old traumas
chassw-6891415 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a beautiful story and even more beautiful production of a middle-aged woman stuck in life... then hit by a metaphorical truck of a midlife crisis that seemed to be heating towards overboiling for the 2 decades since the protagonist's mother died an abrupt yet painfully slow death to cancer.

The scenes not only jump back to past and present but also showcase the past, inner child in present day depictions to highlight the sealed off trauma never healed before. Clare's writing, which was pushed off due to what she felt was writers block, a lack of creative flow, and being a mother is now being pushed to the surface as she faces the music with her realities of today, her adolescence, and her abusive childhood.

It highlights the true internal blocks of underlying traumas - how these can haunt you and create vicious self-destructive patterns if not faced... and most importantly, how to forgive yourself and your inner child... how to look at yourself from the third person (what we see as the audience) and understand what triggers continues to throw a wrench in your path with recycled anger (we can especially see this in the s1e8). Sometimes, you just have to look at that little person within you and cut them some slack - Clare's mindset and experience is stuck in her young experience and understood through the eyes of the young twenty-year-old-self. She is now almost 50 and is finally starting to look reflect and take a glimpse of her hardships through the eyes of a middle aged women... reflections only made with empathizing advice to her peers she so easily can guide. In a sense, Clare is getting a back door entrance to self-forgiveness with her human and mature advice towards helping others unpack their trauma and forgive themselves.

It's truly fantastic for those seeking their own redemptions.

Meh
ria28200311 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was really looking forward to this series since I just love Kathryn Hahn. I can honestly say the storyline is intriguing and I enjoy finding out how these relationships progress with each episode. However, the flashbacks to all the sex scenes is VERY distracting from the story. Im pretty sure the writers could imply some things without actually showing so much. Sometimes less is more and in this case, more is just more and it's wayyyyy too much. Other than the overt sexual context, the show is pretty enjoyable and all of the characters have an interesting backstory which are all worth exploring more (definitely more interesting than all the sex-capades).

Perfect combination of depth, heavy subjects and comedy
esjacobs30 April 2023
I have not read the book, I was attracted to it because of Cheryl Strayed and listened to her podcast named 'Sugar' so I was familiar with the idea. Katrhyn Hahn portrays her role splenidly. Loved her performance, kuddos to her for portraying all the emotions without it being over the top and just very believable. I was very moved by the story, even though I have not yet lost someone that close to me like a parent, the thought of it is always present every once in a while because you know that some day that day will come. And even though it is a heavy subject, the series combines it with comedy and lightness. And the narrative by Katrhyn Hahn character is beautiful, almost poetry-like words. The flashbacks were well done, and shows the puzzle pieces as why her live has become the way it has and her struggles in her current live. Nice rounded up story in 8 30 min episodes.

Life-affirming slow burn dramedy
Almost_Soldout15 April 2023
I would recommend this series to everyone who loves shows like Better things, togetherness, transparent, casual which is quite rarely released these days.

I do miss shows like that which are indie in a way and as result quite niched for very particular viewers.

In 2023 when times are quite harsh for so many people around the world, shows like that can be considered as some sort of treatment because it tells you a someone else story of personal crises but everyone can find so many things in common to overlook these situations from outside and make it's own conclusions.

And yes, most of us are really broken.

Well shot, well acted, sad and promising.

I *wanted* to like it
somethingreal8110 April 2023
I really wanted to like this show, but it left me totally cold. First, while the characters go through major life events and *talk* like they're deep, they're actually all thinly written ciphers--after watching all 8 episodes I honestly wouldn't describe any of the characters as having a distinct personality. The main character spends half the series mourning her mother, but their relationship is so underwritten that it's hard to really feel the impact of her death other than that we're told it was devastating. The out of order nature of the flashbacks also makes the story hard to follow and left me ambivalent about what was happening. (How can you care about characters who suddenly appear out of nowhere? Or about a character's mistakes when the show skips right past the consequences? For example, why bother telling us about someone's heroin problem if we don't learn anything more about it?) Hahn is fine here, but I don't think she's doing anything particularly new and she's really not even doing that much--Sarah Pidgeon as the younger version of Hahn's character does most of the heavy lifting and while she's very good, good performances aren't enough to elevate what's actually pretty thinly written material. The last episode also hints at a major backstory that barely gets explained (and a result leaves Hahn's character looking crazy), the brother and sister have a weird incest-y vibe, and, though I adore Merrit Wever, she feels miscast and way too young to be playing the mother.

Surprising find and yet so needed
pam-007519 April 2023
I saw the trailers a couple times and thought I'd try it. Wow! An emotional tale about love, loss and being human. Yes I cried at each episode as I lost my mom a couple of years ago, albeit not as a young woman but could absolutely relate to the enormity of the loss.

As a parent as a wife there are clearly struggles in staying afloat. This story focused in my opinion on keeping your sanity while attempting to honor your boundaries. I.e. Lucas. The daddy issues I just can't too surreal. Loved this mini series. I'm interested in the marriage outcome, and I hope they bring it back for another 8 episodes, but maybe this was enough.

Heartfelt & Funny
andrianorris16 April 2023
I've read Cheryl Strayed's books and connected with the authenticity and whole-heartedness in her writing, and I wasn't surprised that similar themes came up in this TV miniseries. Real, raw and hits you in the heart and gut. I think if you're middle-aged and looking back on your life, your regrets, your relationships and connections this show will resonate with you in some way. It reflects the complexities of life and the multidemontial nature of our life choices.

I binged - watched this show in less than a week and I am hoping for another season. There are so many shows out there that are superficial, violent or just plain bad and this is none of those things.

Sublime!
hilary_brooks10 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This show was so beautiful and moving that I was just left stunned as it appeared to end with Claire finally reckoning with her Mother's death. First off, Hahn and Pidgeon are incredible and rarely are we gifted a female led show let alone one so compelling. I didn't read the book but I have seen Wild so I knew parts of it were true and others had to be fiction. Another review here stated they prefer the book but it had to divert from Strayed's real life story or it would have been Wild all over again just as a show so I think they did an incredible job building the fiction off the true original narrative. I doubt there will be a second season but I think they could do something absolutely wonderful with just one more order of 8. So much was left hanging or never fully revisited/realized. I loved it. We need more content like this. Reese Witherspoon just keeps knocking them out of the park! A win for those who only wanna watch stories worth watching rather than being overloaded with second rate content. Hello Sunshine is golden:)

A raw, emotional, yet hopeful limited series
GirlRebuilt16 July 2023
One of the best limited series I've seen in quite some time. The subject matter is dark, and this series is very raw and emotional, but also very realistic and well scripted and acted. The script goes back-and-forth in time between the principal characters tumultuous childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood, and the present day, when she is pushing 50 and still inviting chaos into her life. These aptly timed repeated flashback scenes shed light into who the character has become and why. A fairly dysfunctional adult, but with great love for her child, the character constantly navigate flashbacks and memories of a primarily traumatic past. But it was not all bleak, and those glimmers of light seem to be what give her the hope that a stable life is possible and carry her through, even if she is not particularly adept at creating one . Most of all this is just a very good story, something that I find is lacking from many present-day series and films. Have a box of tissues handy, but definitely give this one a watch.
