Learn more- A graphic, stylized, fully immersive 6DOF VR experience comprised of deconstructed landscapes using Mike's own epic City Lino Print series as the basis for the environments. Audio interviews & BFI archive footage, interactive family photos and spatial sound, whisk the viewer into another world, exploring the journey of Artist Mike Hatjoullis' family as immigrants to the UK from Cyprus in the 1930s. Arriving in London, Mike's parents eventually settle in the iconic seaside town of Blackpool where Mike and his siblings grow up working the family's hot dog stall on the Promenade in its heyday 1950s. Mike discovers an extraordinary talent for drawing and eventually wins a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in the swinging 60s, attending with an equally extraordinary cohort of students including David Hockney, Ridley Scott, Norman Ackroyd, Ossie Clark, Zandra Rhodes, Jeff Banks and many more, Mike later becoming an influential Textile designer and successful artist. Intro - 360 video of Mike working in his studio as his Granddaughters introduce him & the story.
Prologue - 3D Stereo scene made of archive photos and artwork telling the story of how Mike's parents left Cyprus in the 1930s in search of a better life to live and work in the UK.
Scene 1 - Mike's parents arrive in London and begin to adapt to life in the UK where the weather is a bit grim at times and the food and language is different. Mike's Father finds work in kitchens and eventually develops skills as a chef. Interactive objects bring up floating galleries of family archive and gaze initiated animations give the viewer a sense of agency
Scene 2 - The family buy a partnership in a large promenade restaurant in Blackpool. Tomlinsons and Mike works the hot dog stall with his brother, meeting the holidaymakers, learning all about hard work, people & begins to discover an extraordinary talent for drawing. Interactive objects bring up floating galleries of family archive and gaze initiated animations give the viewer a sense of agency
Scene 3 - Mike comes of age and gets a job working for a local printers as an apprentice, attending art school 1 day a week. When his Brother Emilios wins a place at Blackpool School of Art, Mike convinces his parents to let him attend full time and after graduating applies to the Royal College of Art, winning a scholarship to study Textile design. Interactive objects bring up floating galleries of family archive and gaze initiated animations give the viewer a sense of agency. There is a Black cat motif in much of Mike's work and the animated cat is attracted to the viewer who can interact with it.
End Titles - we see Mike having a go of Gravity Sketch on the Quest2 and also a selection of the print work which is featured and provides inspiration for the 3D design of the environments.
