German found footage nonsense
Leofwine_draca21 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
BASEMENT is an indie horror flick from Germany, taking the form of an ultra-cheap found footage movie. A rather chubby bloke hears a weird noise in his basement so decides to fill his house with video cameras to capture any events. Inevitably nothing happens of interest, apart from endless talking to the camera scenes and lots of drawn-out emptiness.

Face Palm!

The only link I could find this on was you-tube, AND it was in German with no option of subtitles. But I tried to just keep watching because most of the time it's fine to just watch it on mute if you have to. I started trying that BC I wondered what it was like for deaf people. I quickly realized it's more about what the people are doing. And you actually get to where you can read lips. ANYWAY, as I sat there I started yawning. I then started sharpening pencils and last, I HAD to make coffee. Then I just skipped around through to the end of the movie and it was ALL just terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do NOT waste your time!!!! At least not unless you just want the television on because you can't sleep without it on.

From "wow, that's creepy" to "lol really"
dagmarrokita15 June 2024
The movie starts with a nice idea - something evil lives in the guy's basemet and the guy wants to discover the truth. He meets weird and creepy people, more disturbing things happen in the basenent, the guy gets more and more crazy...

...And then the mess begins. Ghosts, demons, cults, aliens and a terrible cgi dragon. Nothing makes any sense around the end. It looks like "let's gather the most overrated horror tropes and throw them into the last 20 minutes of this movie."

It's was a wasted opportunity to deliver a basic creepy story you watch with your drunk friends for fun, but even this kind of expectation is too high.

Surprisingly well done "Found Footage" flick
classichorrorfan31 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Contains minor spoilers! The movie can't hide it's low production value, which is not necessarily a bad thing for these kind of horror movies. While this causes some problems if you compare it to a flick with a much higher budget, it doesn't make the movie bad at all. The tension and suspense that is build up is really good and keeps you watching. The main actor is decent, the minor roles are OK, with an Exception to the Plumber, who I couldn't believe is a real plumber. The visuals and special effects is what prevented me to give an even higher rating. A good horror movie makes you scared, and this one made me scared. There wasn't a moment I was bored while watching it. Solid 7/10.

I don't think I've ever been more scared by a movie
dfn-19927 December 2020
I very much agree with the user who called this movie a "Surprisingly well done "Found Footage" flick". Yes, this movie is very low budget and the CGI-creature in the final frame detracts from my overall impression of this movie. But holy cow this movie scared the crap out of me! The suspense was just killing me and made me keep the lights on when I had to go to sleep. So even though the story was very simple the movie actually benefits from this because when we are given too much information about the monster/threat it is less scary. This movie is scary as hell so that's why I give it 7/10 even though the movie is more like a 5/10.

Probably the Best "Found Footage" I've Seen
knightox29 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'll be the first to admit it. "Found Footage" films do NOT rate very high on my genre of movies to watch. I burned out on them soon after all the copy-cats decided to be like "The Blair Witch Project". This movie was actually kinda different.

It really has only one character in it named Tim played by Thomas Grieser. (There two others that make brief appearances but they really don't count.) He does an outstanding job as a guy who is nightly tormented by noises coming from his basement.

It sounds like a simple plot and it is but the directing is done in such a convincing and believable way you never get bored. Yes you can tell there was a small budget but that doesn't hurt anything in this flick. The build up and conclusion are very good so it's not one those films you feel like you totally wasted your time on. Definitely worth a watch for a "Found Footage" film.
