Illogical and annoying
Mikelikesnotlikes5 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I just can't forgive lazy writing. The plot was good but wasn't delivered effectively. I don't blame the acting (though its hard not to see Norman as Darryl (especially as he is rocking the same look as TWD series).

Essentially I found it hard to believe that Bauer descends so quickly into a murderous rage when the sleep pod malfunctions and almost kills him. When he reviews the footage and sees Cartwright was almost catatonic at the time, surely his first impression would be to confront him about his delusions.

Why the hell would they pump air into that huge facility each time the wake up when 2 people would use a fraction of the air by wearing suits and breathing bottled air? This is the most glaring logic flaw. You could last for days on the air remaining inside the facility without any re-circulation machinery running.

How does Cartwright get all the way to the top of the silo and look out over the broken city and then get back in time? It looks like the site was nuked so how does their silo survive without a single indication. It is right next door to the destroyed one.

How does Cartwright survive getting shot?

How does Bauer know "it's all a lie" when they have no way of knowing if the other facilities are on line or not.

Too many questions. Too many failures of logic.

The main problem of Air is it doesn't have enough gas to keep the momentum going.
quincytheodore20 September 2015
For a movie called Air, it sure feels tiresomely suffocating. The overall concept is about two men who wake up from stasis sleep to do critical housekeeping on a post-apocalyptic facility. It brings the usual gloomy ambiance and the two actors do possess good acting performance, but the movie is utterly boring. Low on production and very tediously paced, it's almost like a forced prolonged short movie.

Bauer (Norman Reedus) and Cartwright (Djimon Hounsou) work on the ark facility where periodically they would wake up to keep things running. With small cast and setting, the main focus here is the human drama between these two as they troubleshoot any faults in the station while questioning their own sanity.

Plot-wise it's not very complex, there's not much developments or twists, at least not outside the stereotypical sci-fi movies. The back story is told with various clips or narration from both characters, which can feel detached and lackluster at times. Norman Reedus and Djimon Hounsou have decent on-screen presences, however the material is spread too thinly and they struggle to produce any excitement from the barren plot.

That's the main problem of Air, it simply doesn't have enough gas to keep the momentum going. Note that the runtime is the average ninety minutes for a very small scale movie, furthermore it utilizes repetitive themes for filling. It teases the slightly dysfunctional relationship between the two or what mental problem they may have, but these are basic thriller aspects that don't present much thrill in exception of one or two decent scenes.

While the retro 80s futuristic theme can be intriguing and its two leads are capable, most of the movie feels like extended padding. It probably could've done the same with half the runtime, the rest is merely cumbersome trudge over dystopian gig.

Has its moments but quickly fades into the mediocre
eddie_baggins3 April 2016
The first feature length sojourn of Skybound, the group behind the universally successful Walking Dead comics, TV show and all subsequent run-offs, Air (featuring TWD's very own Norman Reedus) is an at first engaging and tense low budget Sci-fi that sadly descends down a rabbit hole of increasingly uninteresting and questionable scenarios.

First time director Christian Cantamessa (the man who wrote the fantastic video game Red Dead Redemption) certainly hasn't given himself an easy first feature to win out on with Air's plot almost exclusive focusing on the maintenance workers of Djimon Hounsou's Cartwright and Reedus's Bauer, who like his Daryl in TWD is still in need of a long overdue haircut.

Like any film that sets itself around a confined space and a confined cast, say like a Moon or Buried, Air has to fight to keep viewers' attention almost entirely through things not seen and engaging acting and while Hounsou and Reedus share some form of chemistry it's not enough to carry the film potentially ripe idea to levels that could've made Air a must see Sci-Fi yarn.

The central idea that Air basis's itself around of our air supply being tarnished by a range of natural of man-made causes with humankinds last hope a group of Noah's Ark like underground facilities with pods of long term sleeping humans is an interesting one and whilst familiar in many senses does seem somewhat fresh but Cantamessa and his co-writer Chris Pasetto can't wring enough out of their limited budget supply on top notch dialogue to take the idea to fresh places.

Small moments and a quality opening half make Air something more than a non-event but this is certainly a forgettable start of Skybound's foray into Hollywood movies. Cantamessa seems like a young filmmaker with some talent and it'd be great to see him go on with his efforts here while Reedus is lucky he has Daryl to fall back on and poor old Hounsou is still chasing a role of the same quality he found in Blood Diamond and In America.

Messy, Pointless and Boring
claudio_carvalho29 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
After a chemical war, the technicians Bauer (Norman Reedus) and Cartwright (Djimon Hounsou) are responsible for keeping working chambers with prominent persons in suspended animation that have been selected to build a post-apocalypse society in an underground facility. Cartwright has moments of insanity talking to his mate Abby (Sandrine Holt) while performing the maintenance procedure. When his chamber is accidentally damaged, he decides to use the breathing apparatus to seek spare parts in a nearby facility, but he discloses a terrible secret. Meanwhile Bauer rewind the footages inside the facility and discovers that Cartwright is planning to kill him.

"Air" is a deceptive low budget movie with a messy, pointless and boring story. The dialogs are dull and there are basically two characters. After the end of the film, it is difficult to write a summary of the confused story. The cult-actor Norman Reedus from "The Walking Dead" and his agent should select better screenplays. My vote is three.

Not worth watching

Warning: Spoilers
Even though, the acting was descent and the original premise for the story showed promise in the end it was predictable and rubbish. The only thing that i found interesting was a bet I made with myself: You have two guys, one is a black man and the other resembles Sean Bean a lot. If it was Sean Bean I wouldn't even bother to bet but hey that's someone who looks a lot like him. So who will die first??? It seems that just looking like Sean Bean is enough to get you killed. Other than that you have two guys that are bordering crazy. One doesn't give a f**k but is edgy, and another who does whatever his imaginary wife in his subconscious tells him to do. Yeah it seems that wife doesn't even need to be alive (or awoken in that case) to call the shots.

FFS I shouldn't even check the spoiler alert box, it's so cliché and predictable that even 10 year old's would figure it out within a few minutes, couple that with an extremely deflating ending and you have one of the worst sci-fi (really?? Sci-fi???? that's not even sci-fi or thriller or whatever) movie of the decade!

A confusing and slow paced thriller
Gordon-1126 August 2015
This film tells the story of two men in a facility in a post apocalyptic world, whose job is to get up once every six months to keep top scientists alive in their respective sleeping chambers.

"Air" has an interesting story, but it doesn't have enough to keep a ninety minutes runtime. It is slow paced to the point that it appears to be dragging on just for the sake of filling up screen time. The story is told in a confusing manner, and often I have to form my own interpretations of what is happening. There are far too many unanswered questions regarding many aspects of the plot, hence the plot appears messy. It's quite a pity because "Air" has the potential to be captivating.

The script lets it down
Leofwine_draca18 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
AIR is a generally dull indie two-hander for two popular actors, Norman Reedus of THE WALKING DEAD fame and GLADIATOR star Djimon Hounsou. They play two engineers in a futuristic landscape (glimpsed via some disappointing CGI vistas) where toxic air has killed off most of the population. Their job consists of them doing little more than tending to various instruments, but before long their isolation and claustrophobia sees them falling out. A film like this lives or dies depending on the script, but this one offers little suspense and a whole lot of lazy character-building. Reedus and Hounsou are as good as ever; the rest is a mess.

Well worth watching if you enjoy sci-fi dystopia genre
johnathanleigh16 August 2015
Despite other reviews I've read i liked this movie. Read no further than this review, or the synopsis because the less you know the more immersed a film will feel.

It's about two men who service a facility which hold the last remnants of humanity and civilization. The air outside is toxic, there are other facilities just like theirs out there.

Although the cinematography was average, and i think some scenes could have emphasized claustrophobia better; nonetheless, the production value was great which is necessary for films in the sci-fi genre. The soundtrack i really liked and it really sealed the deal on my interest. From the start there was growing suspense that kept me fixated.

Up until the conflict, i felt like i was alongside them in this dystopia. I don't think the chemistry between Bauer and Cartwright was really that fluid and the dialogue (banter) itself was sloppy and forced. But they really shined when they were in their separate scenes and that is what held my intrigue.

Had potential

If they had fleshed this out and included more details this could have been a more enjoyable movie. As it stands its left wanting. It does have some good scenes but not enough to make it adequate let alone satisfying.

6.5 But I rounded up my vote.
alympik15 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I give this a 6.5 but u can't do that so I rounded it up to a 7. I really liked this film up until it's first ending... At about 1:25:00. Then it seemed like they gave in to the crowd who says "what happens after that?" or even worse the crowd who says "oh, u have to show the guy get the girl" and added an additional ending that was, in the lightest of terms, unnecessary. To me, it just messed up a really good film.

This is a sci-fi drama about two guard/maintenance workers at an airtight silo housing VIP scientists who are all in a sort of cryogenic sleep because the outside world has been contaminated. These guards are also in a sort of cryogenic and every six months they are automatically awoken to analyze data about the air in the outside world and do routine maintenance on the pods/facility. Evidentially, these VIP scientists are meant to foster in a new civilization when the outside environment becomes hospitable again.

This was designed/written to be a relatively inexpensive film to shoot. There are only 3 characters and they are underground an in a fairly small place so it's obviously a dialogue driven film and the tension was done pretty well. Sure, it could have been done better but this a good start for this director. Just should have ended it where It should have ended, 5 minutes early.

Overall, solid film. As I said, my rating is a 6.5.

Not particularly good
orcadiansmeghead30 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Can I say first off, that my wife came into the room when I was about 30 minutes into this and I managed to convince her for 10 minutes that it was the new episode of the Walking Dead - oh how we laughed when she discovered my joke.

To save you all from watching this, I can sum the film up for you in a few sentences.

The guy who plays Daryl out of off of The Walking Dead takes a break from the series for about 15 minutes, and goes over the road to another studio where someone has set up as a 'delapidated basement plant room' set. Also, the main guy out of off of Amistad and whatever else he's been in does the same.

There, they play two scruffy air conditioning engineers who wake up six months out of cryogenic submersion (the Amistad guy managed to get through this without growing any facial hair whatsoever) and the two bicker and argue for 10 minutes before one locks the other out of the facility. Whislt outside, we get to see an alleged post apocalyptic city on the horizon (this 20 second scene was what most of the films budget went into so bear with me and make the most of that mental image if you would) The guy out of off of Amistad then tries to get back inside only to be shot in the chest by Daryl out of off of The Walking Dead but makes a frankly completely implauasble recovery and manages to get rid of poor Daryl.

The end.

If you want to watch this utter pile of pigs number twos, please go ahead and tell me all the action, necessary dialogue, special effects, plot holes and plot developments I may have missed, but I watched it all the way through without interruption, and wrote this immediately after. That's the film folks. It's been done before with almost identical formats, with other cheapo TV actors who may have also thought it would be a good idea not to bother getting a cut and blowdry for a movie this big as The Walking Dead image is more important.

I strongly recommend to anyone reading this who hasn't seen the film but doesn't believe me to go ahead and take the plunge. I guarantee you'll be wanting those 90 minutes of your life back. I know I do.

3 out of 10,and THATS being generous. Thanks for calling.

A sort of Moon, but not that good
siderite24 July 2016
I liked the film, as a performance piece from Reedus and Hounsou, and truly it's not more than that. It's a situational drama. The plot is, in fact, irrelevant. The ending scene that brings closure was already not needed.

That being said, I feel like the script could have been a little more polished. The dialogue and the decisions of the characters sometimes felt a bit fractured, the movie lacks a natural fluidity. Certainly the film could have gained a point if the extra scenes - like the pointless and extra long beginning - would have been cut in favor of character development.

Bottom line: it doesn't deserve such a low rating on IMDb. Cantamessa may not be the best director in the world, but for his first full length movie, he wasn't bad. I felt as if the film was inspired by Moon. It had the same feel, only with two protagonists. And as Moon, the movie could easily have been an episode of a sci-fi anthology. Moon was clearly better, though.

SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY AND I CAN'T HELP MYSELF
nogodnomasters11 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The government(s) create "Noah Ark Facilities" in order to survive the "tyranny" as hybrid nuclear and chemical weapons destroy life on earth. Two people are tasked with waking up every six months and perform checks, then go back to sleep. Bauer (Norman Reedus) likes porn and masturbation. Cartwright (Djimon Hounsou) imagines and talks to his wife (Sandrine Holt). Cartwright's sleeper unit becomes damaged which sets the plot in motion as our two try to find a fix.

Oh yes, if you come out of the "high tech coffin" unit too fast, the oxygen transition can effect the brain.

This is a slow paced two man (and one imagined woman) drama with a sci-fi background. It is a character study. The scant details of what happened comes about 20 minutes into the movie. A twist? Sure. The main problem is that we see the same two guys. Eventually I came to dislike Bauer and pity Cartwright, finding myself rooting for someone who may be a touch mentally ill.

Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

Low budget nonsense
doctorcd200518 September 2015
Looking at the movie synopsis "In the near future....etc" I was expecting at least the look and feel of the film to be somewhat futuristic or at least using technology of today. Yet from the opening scene shows old style chunky cathode ray monitors of yesteryear as their computer interfaces but wait a minute, one of the guys is walking around with an ipad... come on, from which junkyard did they scrounge up the CRT's ?. It was a bad credibility start but managed to grind through the implausibility for the most. The set is as claustrophobic as the plot with B grade acting to boot a B movie. Give this one a miss.

Feels like a low budget movie
dragoscarabet13 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The idea of no air on the planet was awesome, the story behind the movie seemed good and motivated me to watch it. But the way everything goes, it's plain boring, it feels exactly like one of those Walking Dead episodes where nothing exciting really happens, what a shame. The two actors are good, but I didn't understood the behavior of Cartwright, it's seems just stupid and without logic. Anyway since I'm not allowed to spoil anything, I will just say that it feels like a really low budget movie these days, yeah some people might say that it's similar to old movies from the 80's or the 90's, but even those movies had more content. In "Air" you get almost no information about the past or the future, no explanation about the events that happened, are happening and that will happen, and that time counter ... it's a joke. I gave a 4 because the two actors are doing a good job, but the problem it's not them, it's the guy who wrote this story and the director who made the scenes ... A good idea that was flushed down the toilet ... Best adjective to describe this movie: disappointed

Meh...
hammer_of_god-0407727 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was like I said above meh... The story it self was not great, not horrible, not even good or bad it was just bland and not really very imaginative. And trust me it is the story that kills, not the setting or the acting, or the filming all of which were at least good. It is the the monotonous, going exactly where you think it is, plot. If you expect a twist or turn in this flick forget it. And not a thinking mans movie either, maybe for a 10 year-old. And while it has a sci fi setting it is really just a tenuous excuse for a dialogue movie about a person who has lost their bearing on reality in a desperate situation. Think two people (one of which is murderously crazy) in a life boat, with one bottle of water story. As a 30 minute story it would have been better and that may stretch it. I had to watch it twice because it put me to sleep in the first 15 minutes, I woke up in the last 10 minutes and knew exactly what was going on. Meh.. More effort on a decent plot would have helped a lot.

Another cheapskate film
lakeofred21 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This has gone too far!!!, Let me warn you about something if you intend to watch this movie... its one more film that is made using only 2 actors so that they can minimize the cost and make lots of money selling junk(like most of the films that come out the last 5 years),in the beginning I thought the director had chosen intentionally the equipment of the facility that the film was set on to be outdated monitors and metallic boxes with colorful lights to make it look like its some retro post apocalyptic set up , THATS NOT THE CASE, if you look back in the movie and take notice between the CRT monitors are some TFT screens with windows ( most probably they went and bought for a few bucks old displays and put some other crap in there like tft just because they were laying around) , while in the movie there are old light bulbs in the buttons of the boxes we can see that in the hazmat suit there is a cheap Chinese led bar light (probably brought off ebay for 3 $),the hazmat suit is made of stitched plastic wrap material like the one that is used in the base of tents for outdoor camping) , WE ARE SUPPOSED to believe that people had been in cryo stasis chambers for lots of years when the chambers are not even air tight (when the lid opens in the end of the movie we can see black foam material used for isolation THE SAME ONE WE BUY FROM SUPERMARKETS TO CLOSE GAPS IN OUR WINDOWS AND DOORS), in the back of the hazmat suit is a plastic tube in gray color that I bet my head is bought off Leroy merlin or Praktiker for toilets and bathrooms ,DO I NEED TO SAY ANYTHING MORE ? TAKE A 1 OUT OF 10 AND THATS TOO MUCH FOR WASTING ALL THESE PEOPLES TIME,either make a proper movie or STOP IT

An interesting take.
MikeMvrd21 November 2020
This film involving two maintenance men keeping a facility and it's "Sleepers" in preserve to rebuild humanity in an apocalyptic world. The story involving the two men and not so much the world they are in now makes it an interesting emotional take especially if they are what feels like being alone.

It could use a little more dynamic of emotion between the two but still makes a point.

It's a film that can make you think differently on the situation.

Air Pollution, What's that smell?
jimlacy20037 October 2015
Yes I do "enjoy sci-fi dystopia genre" but this movie was flat out horrible.

I could only stand about 20 minutes of it before I had to throw in the towel.

I really do like Norman Reedus, but I honestly don't know how he ended up in this horrible movie. For that matter it looks like he wasn't even trying.

First of all it look like they spent all of maybe $5000 to make this movie. Filmed in what looked like a basement. It looks like they raided the local E-waste dump to throw in a bunch of old electronics junk. Then they made a few cheap CGI cut scenes.

Sometimes there are movies like this, cheaply made, mostly in all one location, etc., and turn out great. This was not one of them.

If you like Sci-Fi or not, this is just a horrible movie all ways around..

Bad ending
tannokrumm12 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I overall liked the movie. But the ending was really bad. This is a movie where the wimpy wins and gets his happy ending. He should have been the one who should have died. And then the last scene could have still stayed similar. Where the Norman Reedus character wakes up to the world being safe again.. Pods opening, people waking up and then facing her. And then wondering about the past actions present in the movie. What it took to get there and everything that happened. It's just really unsatisfactory that the other guy lived as he tried to kill him at the pod and was already losing his mind. Or even an ending where they both would have died would have been more satisfactory. The most unlikeable character won everything. It just left a really bad taste in your mouth after the movie ended.

Really Awful
taraross19 September 2015
My husband knew the movie was going to be bad right from the start. He said, "sounds like B-rated music". When they paused unnecessarily on a stupid cat poster, that's the point when I realized he was right.

This is one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. I love Norman. He's a fantastic actor. So disappointing.

I also love the sci-fi genre and really wanted to like this movie. I've allowed myself to like other strange flicks out there (The Signal, Solaris). However, Air had no substance, no in-depth story, no real purpose. Air is a great title for it as it's nothing more than terribly wasted time and air. Hopefully Norman sticks to The Walking Dead, and doesn't venture into something dreadfully boring like this again.

Very good
karmatt15 August 2015
I'm not sure what is with other people, but I thought this movie was very good. Maybe they just can't enjoy something that is not a big blockbuster budget mega action movie.

I enjoyed the entire movie. I thought the story, acting, set were all good and kept me watching and thinking the entire time. Never once did I think it was boring or wish that it would hurry up already. I thought both main characters were very good and I was never sure who I really wanted to root for.

There were only a few places where I thought things wouldn't have gone the way they did them but maybe that is just me.

Yes, I would definitely recommend this movie if you like to think and feel rather than just be entertained.

An "Outer Limits"-esque claustrophobic thriller with the typical small cast and the usual moral questions of life and death
m_imdb-905-69121318 September 2015
Dirty-bomb terrorism attacks have forced the US government to retro-fit cold-war era nuclear fallout shelters with suspended animation pods in order to wait out the irradiated atmosphere. Each facility has two maintenance technicians, who wake at periodic intervals to check the atmosphere outside and repair faulty equipment. However, when one of the technician's pods malfunctions, he is forced to venture outside and discovers the world isn't how they believed it to be.

Air is an "Outer Limits"-esque claustrophobic thriller with the typical small cast and the usual moral questions of life and death, and how humans react when pushed to the edge. However, with a notable cast, Air manages to rise above the TV or straight-to-DVD level by way of some decent production values and a script that's not entirely terrible. There's nothing too surprising about the plot twists, but it's a fine example of the genre and like a comfortable old shoe, you won't regret taking a walk in it, even if it's around familiar territory.

Strange Movie
shanshan29828 October 2015
Another film, set after the apocalypse world. Unlike the other films associated with the apocalypse, here you will not see any effects, the film takes place essentially in the bunker which saved all the people (anesthetized , it must be said) are essential for continued human existence. All of this film you will see only two people playing. Even if the idea behind the film is fine, the script was bad , not to mention the investment inferior to the film itself. In addition, the film just terribly slow and boring. Even in the second part of the film tended plot completely different place, and not at all in a positive sense. In addition to what really bugged me was that it was one of the guys talked to some imaginary woman throughout the film.

In short, you do not know what I suffered ... Rating 2 out of 10 .

Can't understand what is being said
the_doofy2 February 2016
I have no idea what much of the dialogue spoken is, as the spoken sound is done so poorly. --I noticed one guy name 'Eric Paul' seems to have been responsible for this debacle, as he is listed for most of the spoken part of the movie tech, in three areas no less in the credits.

--The premise of the movie is awesome, and it could of used better direction and better drama for the punch line, better scripted out, or maybe better script editing, but at the end of the day, if I can't understand what is being said most of the time, and its a 'thinker' movie versus eye candy, I have to give it a fail --

==I like to suggest unique movies to others, but I cannot recommend this one -sorry
