Quotes

  • Mike Milligan : [Mike arrives at Elm Tree in the morning to find Tracy sat at the window in the entrance hall]  Tracy? Did you not go home last night?

Tracy Beaker : Do you remember when I used to sit here for hours on end?

Mike Milligan : Waiting for you mum.

Tracy Beaker : I'd have given anything to get out of this place. Now I can hardly bear to drag myself away.

Mike Milligan : You'll be fine. You have a great future ahead of you. I just have to be brave. Every time I make a piece of toast and you're not there to pinch it.

Tracy Beaker : Brave? I thought you were pleased I was leaving.

Mike Milligan : Tracy, do you have any idea how hard it's been for me this week? Terrified every time you were nice to me in case I'd crack and ask you to stay.

Tracy Beaker : Do you want me to?

Mike Milligan : No. Well, yeah, but no. This is right. You have to go.

Tracy Beaker : I thought you weren't going to miss me.

[Moves away from the window, and sits on the sofa in the hall,Mike joins her]

Mike Milligan : How could I not miss you, eh? The way you always have an answer for everything. The way you always break the rules. The way that you show our lot that no matter how badly the world treats them, they matter. And that it's right for them to stand up for what they believe in. But do you know what I'm going to miss the most? That stab of pride I get every time you do something unbelievably irritating that turns out to be so completely right. Cos every time that happens, I look at you and I see proof that a life in care can be full of achievement and promise.

Tracy Beaker : Mike, if you're trying to make me cry, it's not working.

    [Starts tearing up a bit]

    Mike Milligan : Hay fever?

    [Tracy nods]

    Mike Milligan : Me too.

    [Starts crying a bit too]

Tracy Beaker : You know, I never miss my dad, not like I miss my mum. Maybe because I never knew him, but I think it's cos... I think it's cos... Because you've been like a father to me.

    Mike Milligan : Oh, Tracy.

[Tracy hugs Mike, then stands up gets her bag, ready to leave]

Mike Milligan : Goodbye, Tracy Beaker.

    Tracy Beaker : Bye.

[Tracy leaves the Dumping Ground, for the last time]
