- Carrie Wells: [after her mother recognized a composite sketch] Yeah, we had one of those old Country Squires, and that was all she could remember. She just shut down. But at least I got a name.
- Al Burns: That's something.
- Carrie Wells: [sensing his skepticism] What?
- Al Burns: This is coming from your mom, that's all. She's been a little mixed up, is all I'm saying.
- Carrie Wells: Okay, you weren't there. I saw her face; she recognized him.
- Al Burns: A few weeks ago, she thought you and I were still together.
- Carrie Wells: All right, so what's your point? I should just ignore it? He could be Rachel's killer.
- Al Burns: No, pace yourself is all.
- Al Burns: What do we got?
- Mike Costello: Marshall Smith. Uh, package delivery guy saw blood seeping under the door and called it in. No call to EMS, 'cause he was already in rigor.
- Al Burns: Puts his death at over twelve hours. Any word from the M.E.?
- Mike Costello: No. They're on their way. Roe and Nina are canvassing door to door.
- Al Burns: Stabbing.
- Mike Costello: Looks like it.
- Al Burns: Have a weapon?
- Mike Costello: No, still looking.
- Al Burns: Defensive wounds on the hands.
- Carrie Wells: What is that, a burn scar?
- Al Burns: I don't know. That looks like a brand or a bad tattoo removal. Pocket turned out. Robbery, maybe?
- Mike Costello: Eh, not likely. I found his wallet and his keys in the bedroom.
- Carrie Wells: [finding a cigarette butt in a potted plant] If you smoked, wouldn't you have an ashtray somewhere?
- Mike Costello: Well, it doesn't smell like smoke in here.
- Al Burns: So if it's not him, he might have had company. Could be Marshall knew his killer. Might be able to grab some DNA from the cigarette.
- Carrie Wells: He's got a kid.
- Roe Saunders: Oh, what, are you psychic now, too? I was just gonna say that.
- Carrie Wells: Well, I got a pail full of dirty diapers. What do you got?
- Roe Saunders: [sarcastic] Wait, I... I remember something. I...
- [seriously]
- Roe Saunders: I remember that I just talked to a neighbor who said Smith was a single father. Kid's name is Bianca. 18 months. They've lived here just over a year. No sign of the mother being in the picture.
- Al Burns: Right now, there's no sign of the baby, either. Mike, check the roof and basement. Roe, storage closets, garbage chutes. Let's pray this is the only crime scene.
- Roe Saunders: Checked a lot of storage space. No sign of the baby.
- Al Burns: We treat this as a kidnapping until we know for sure. 'Till we find out about the mother, she's our primary suspect. Mike, have communications put it over the air.
- Nina Inara: Turns out our boy Marshall Smith has a rap sheet. Mostly property crimes in the 124, but he's clean for 14 months.
- Al Burns: Any kind of child abuse?
- Nina Inara: Doesn't look like it.
- Al Burns: Neighbors barely saw him. Said he was a good guy. Loved his daughter. You find anything?
- Carrie Wells: [holding up a photo] Other than this? His cell phone number is 555-0138. He works at JFK. 555-0196. And he has a relationship with Children's Services.
- Al Burns: You got all that in the bedroom?
- Carrie Wells: Yeah. Numbers are taped to the back of the phone. This one here is for Children's Services.
- Al Burns: Well, it's not labeled. Impressive.
- Carrie Wells: No. No, I'm not a human phone book, Al. I called the number.
- Al Burns: If he's calling Children's Services, maybe something was going on.
- Carrie Wells: Yeah.
- Al Burns: If Marshall was mistreating his daughter, maybe the mom took her to protect it?
- Carrie Wells: You do realize that in that theory, the hero of your story is also a murderer.
- Al Burns: I'm not saying it's a heartwarming theory. It's a theory.
- Al Burns: His boss said he saw Marshall hit Jose just as he was exiting his office. Is it possible he waited for that moment because he wanted his boss to see it?
- Mike Costello: What, you think he wanted to get fired? It sounds like he worked his ass off to get that job. It doesn't make a ton of sense.
- Al Burns: I know it doesn't. Not yet.
- Mike Costello: I read your case report. Last year, you left your daughter in the hallway of a dope house while you got high. So you want to know what I think? I think this is payback for a drug debt. I think that you owe these guys money, so they killed Marshall. And they kidnapped your baby.
- Angie: I have nothing to do with this. You go to hell.
- Mike Costello: I need someone to blame. Right now, you're looking at three to five years for a drug charge. Cooperate. Or you will see just how easily I can change that into ten to twenty.
- Al Burns: Rosario's not the type? So tell me, what type is she?
- Carrie Wells: Tough, moral, committed. She's on a mission.
- Al Burns: Oh.
- Carrie Wells: Moving on...
- Al Burns: No, just... sounds like you know something about this woman.
- Carrie Wells: Look, what I know is that she wouldn't conspire with some gorilla to kidnap a child; I know that.
- Al Burns: Getting a little personal.
- Carrie Wells: No, no, it's not.
- Al Burns: It's personal, you can't do your job.
- Carrie Wells: Where'd you read that, "Detectiving for Dummies"?
- Al Burns: The Civic is Rosario's.
- Carrie Wells: I'm guessing the Escalade is not.
- Al Burns: [feeling the hood] It's warm. They just got here.
