The birthplace of such recent gems as Hannah Ha Ha, Retrograde, The Civil Dead, Yelling Fire In An Empty Theater, and Waiting for the Light to Change, the Slamdance Film Festival returns for its 29th edition, kicking off January 20 in Utah and January 23 online. One title that especially caught our eye is Love and Work, the latest from Pete Ohs, who last directed the SXSW hit Jethica. Starring Stephanie Hunt, Will Madden, Frank Mosley, Alexi Pappas, and John S. Davies, we’re pleased to exclusively premiere the film’s first teaser ahead of a Slamdance debut on January 20.

The trailer for Waiting for the Light to Change, an independent feature film produced entirely through DePaul University’s Indie Studio, opens on a wistful scene: five friends run excitedly out of a worn down prius in an open field at dusk while on their way to a weeklong winter getaway at a secluded lake house, where the group negotiates the existential tumult of their early twenties.
Created as the latest release from DePaul’s Indie Studio—an in-house program dedicated to helping students navigate the film industry’s dynamic digital landscape—the film serves as Mfa Directing Graduate Linh Tran’s directorial debut and impressively features an all-student cast and crew. Chicago – The title is the perfect statement on this debut feature film from writer/director Lihn Tran. “Waiting for the Light to Change” is about a group of post collegiate friends who are wondering what is next for their lives during a vacation together. The film release – through Video On Demand and DVD – is October 20th, 2023.
The film is about transition, as friends in their mid twenties gather for a week long vacation at a Lake Michigan beachside home. The main character is Amy, who has gone through a dramatic weight loss, and finds herself wrestling between loyalty she feels for her best friend Kim and her attraction to Kim’s new boyfriend. The cast is Asian American, but the issues are universal. What does “being adult” mean when there is that point in your twenties when decisions need to be made?

“I’m a new filmmaker,” Linh Tran tells me at one point, with an emphasis on the word new, when talking about Waiting for the Light to Change. Born in Vietnam, Tran moved to the US to study with a theater background before pursuing directing. She received an Mfa from DePaul University in Chicago, and through the school’s program was able to make her directorial debut, which recently won the Grand Jury Prize for narrative features at the Slamdance Film Festival.
