It was a pretty common practice in the early days of animation to take a song and theme the cartoon around it. And the first cartoon, The Man on the Flying Trapeze (1934), gets it's plotline, it's melody and it's title for that matter from a popular old folk song. This cartoon also features the only animated appearance of Olive's mother, Nana Oyl.
The second cartoon features Popeye using an illness to get Olive's attention.
This last cartoon in this episode, She-Sick Sailors (1944), starts out the same way as the last one did, but then takes a bazar turn. It's a Famous Studios cartoon that put together two very popular elements that the Fleischer Studios had originally introduced to the animation world. One of those elements is the namesake of this show and the other is Superman. Fleisher Studios had just wrapped up 19 cartoons of Superman.
