Season Two Review

After a chaotic first episode of the first season of "Birdgirl", I felt the show settled down and I quite liked the remaining five episodes. Unfortunately, I felt that this whole second season was a little too much like that first episode, and I found myself caring less and less about what was going on.

Judy Sebben (Paget Brewster) continues to try and produce innovative products to secure the future of the multinational 'Sebben and Sebben' that she's named the CEO of. This is complicated by the fact that she's also Birdgirl, a crimefighting vigilante. Events cause both Judy and Birdgirl to separately question their sexuality and for Judy to explore her suitability as CEO, as she's unwilling to fire anyone.

So, some of the positives about the series remain. I still like the art style, not dissimilar to the Hanna Barbara look, but with an almost "Venture Brothers" style in movement and backgrounds. I still quite like the vocal performances, particularly Paget Brewster. As I say though, these six episodes are a little to chaotic and unfocused for my taste. There's also a distinct lack of Birdgirl in this "Birdgirl" show, almost as if that's an aspect of the show they were forced to continue with, rather than one they actively wanted.

Though I can't see a confirmed cancellation anywhere, it does look increasingly like this is the end of the run for "Birdgirl" and, to be honest, I think maybe that's for the best. I would still like to investigate "Harvey Birdman", which is also on the Channel Four streaming service in the UK, so it is available to me at the moment.
