Coindident with the Spanish Flu was a second less deadly epidemic of encephalitis lethargica colloquially known as sleeping sickness. It is attributed with half a million deaths and a comparable number incapacitated but it suddenly ended before medical researchers could find that cause until a brief resurgence in 1993.—David Foss
