- The film originally premiered at numerous festival and was then shelved for 2 years until a re-edited version (titled "The Current War: The Director's Cut") was released theatrically in 2019
- The music of the original cut (by Volker Bertelmann aka Hausckha and Dustin O'Halloran) has been replaced in the director's cut by a new score by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans
- Different cuts were released theatrically in 2019. In the US, the film runs 102 minutes, but in the UK and Europe it runs 108 minutes. As well as including several additional scenes, there are various other small changes. For example, the US release begins with a voiceover by Edison; the European cut does not have this, but instead has several establishing text cards. Later, the US version introduces several characters with onscreen captions; these are missing entirely from the European version. When Dash Edison taps out an insult about JP Morgan in Morse code, in the US version his message is spelled out in subtitles for the viewer's benefit, but in the European version it is not.
