- Julia Houston: Eileen, she's a movie star who has never done live theater. She has a lot of work ahead of her. We need her yesterday.
- Eileen Rand: And she'll be here by the weekend, okay?
- [turns, leaves]
- Julia Houston: We want you to do it.
- Karen Cartwright: You want...?
- Julia Houston: We want you to understudy Marilyn.
- Derek Wills: Are you up for that?
- Karen Cartwright: Yes. Sure. Yes.
- [giggles merrily]
- Karen Cartwright: [showing up at his office] Surprise!
- Dev Sundaram: You're a sight for sore eyes.
- Karen Cartwright: I have news.
- Dev Sundaram: So do I.
- [they embrace]
- Dev Sundaram: Come on, you first.
- Karen Cartwright: Movie star didn't show up.
- Dev Sundaram: That's bad, isn't it?
- Karen Cartwright: No, not this time. I got a promotion. I'm the understudy. And since there is no movie star, for now, I'm Marilyn.
- [they kiss]
- Karen Cartwright: [as they walk along the main street] I'm not really doing anything. He just moves me around the stage.
- Ivy Lynn: They did the same thing to Marilyn. They just expected her to be there, look gorgeous, and do whatever she was told. She hated it.
- Karen Cartwright: Yeah, but I'm just an understudy. I can't actually talk back to them.
- Ivy Lynn: Karen. You get to be her. For one week. Don't waste the chance.
- [goes off]
- Derek Wills: I just had a call from Eileen. Rebecca's gonna be turning up sooner than we thought, she'll be at rehearsals tomorrow.
- Karen Cartwright: [softly] Oh.
- Derek Wills: You did some great work, Karen. The show's better off for it.
- Karen Cartwright: You came over here to tell me that?
- Derek Wills: Yes, I did. I, uhm,
- [clears throat]
- Derek Wills: I also...
- [sighs]
- Derek Wills: wanted to apologize.
- Karen Cartwright: For what?
- Derek Wills: Oh, I think you know. That night in my apartment.
- [last lines]
- Rebecca Duvall: [star arriving at last] Hello! Am I in the right place?
- Eileen Rand: Rebecca Duvall!
- [they air-kiss]
