A Quirky, Funny First Episode
hornsbyhavoc16 June 2015
As the first episode of the offbeat, wacky Disney series Gravity Falls, the pilot "Tourist Trapped" starts the ball rolling and introduces several key points to the series. When siblings Dipper and Mabel Pines are sent to the small town of Gravity Falls, Oregon, they think it will just be another summer, spent for their part-time con man great uncle (or, as they call him, "Grunkle") Stan, who initially seems to simply care about money but eventually reveals a more caring side, at his tourist trap The Mystery Shack. However, not all is what it seems, as Dipper finds a mysterious journal in the woods and the twins realize that this summer could be much more interesting than they originally thought. After reading the journal, Dipper becomes concerned that Mabel's new boyfriend, Norman, is a zombie, and tries to rescue her before it is too late. Altogether, this was a quirky, entertaining and very funny first episode of the series, with an interesting mystery beginning to form. The five major characters who appear in the show the most (Dipper, Mabel, Stan, Soos, and Wendy) are introduced, and the show immediately manages to find the balance of mystery and comedy, becoming an entertaining first outing while beginning the overarching plot of the series. And just when you think it's over, one final twist is added at the very end of the episode before the credits. After several years of relatively disappointing television, Disney finally seems to have hit their stride with a darker, funnier, more intriguing show designed for enjoyment by children, teens, and adults alike. The beginning of a great series.

I don't think you understand the gravity of the situation. I was really hooked after the first episode. This show is really worth grappling.

Warning: Spoilers
Call me, the pop-culture, Isaac Newton, because I just discovered 'Gravity Falls'. I was really blown away by just how funny and amazing, this Disney Channel cartoon is. Nearly all of it, is truly wonderful. It's impossible to put down! It remind me, so much of the shows: 'The Simpsons', 'The X-Files', and 'Twin Peaks', all put into one. Inspired by the summer of 2006, which he spent working at Portland's Laika animation studio as a storyboard artist on "Jack and Ben's Animated Adventure," a movie that was scrapped in 2008 & his relationship with his twin sister, Ariel; creator and writer, Alex Hirsch's series tells the story of 12 year old, twins Dipper (Voiced by Jason Ritter) and Mabel Pines (Voiced by Kristen Schaal) discovering the paranormal mysteries of their town, with their great uncle Stan (Also voiced by series creator Alex Hirsch), during the course of a summer. Premiering after the Disney Channel Original Movie, 'Let It Shine', on June 15, 2012, this episode has Dipper believing he just solves another case, when he believes Mabel's new boyfriend might be a zombie. However, unannounced to him, Mabel's new boyfriend might turn out to be, something, much, much, more sinister. Without spoiling the episode, too much, I have to say, while I like this episode, because it establish a lot of key characters, and future events, to what's to come, such as "The Time Traveler's Pig" (Season 1, Episode 9), 'A Tale of Two Stans" (Season 2, Episode 12), & 'Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls' (Season 2, Episode 20). I just felt, the writing was a bit underwhelming and not finish. Maybe, the episode was a little too fast pace. After all, the flashbacks didn't really explain, how Mabel met her boyfriend in the first place, nor the reasons, why the twins are in Gravity Falls in the first place. Also, while I like the twist, toward the end; I just wish the episode explain more, the reasons why the creatures needed a queen in the first place. I felt that I was missing a lot of information here. Makes me, want to see the unaired pilot that was the earlier version of the episode. Maybe, they explain it there. Besides that, the plot of the episode is pretty meaningful. I like how it deals with the importance of trust. Although Dipper and Mabel have different views. Their sibling bond to each other is closer than ever, because how much, they trusted each other. This theme would be carry out to other episodes, such as "Not What He Seems' (Season 2, Episode 11) & 'Gideon Rises' (Season 1, Episode 20) to great success. I also dig all the clues, this episode has. It gives the episode, a lot of rewatch value. Some great examples of Easter eggs are the mysterious '618' number that appear in nearly every episode of the series. It refers to the date in which, series creator, Alex Hirsch, and his twin, was born: June 18; which also happens to appear here in the first page of Journal 3. 618 also appear in the Mystery Shack's address, and Whack-A-Mole machine's score, but there is plenty of others places, the number shows up that I wouldn't spoil for you. Another thing, you might had notice, about this series, is the cryptogram that appears in the intro and the ending. Without telling you, what it says. I will try to give you, a hint, how to solve the riddle, yourself. All you have to do, is watch the episode, backwards. Another thing, that people might have notice about this episode and show, is the controversial use of supposed "Illuminati", 'Masonic' and "Occult" symbols. Because of this, the show did anger, a number of religious watch group for trying to corrupt young viewers into devil worshipping. In my opinion, those people are just misinform. None of those symbols, is really about satanic. I think, people just need to read more and learn the history. They are overreacting. Also, much of the symbols, people see here, is pretty much very noticeable in real-life society. So, don't blame this show for it. Blame society. Also, nobody really cares. Symbols like 'all seeing eye' has been there, since the dawn of civilization. It's the symbol for 'God', so why are they hating? In the end, these signs are inserted into this show to add 'mystery' that's all. Nothing really sinister. Despite the series' dark undertones, there is nothing, too harmful or scary as well. Most of the thrills are pretty tame. However, in many ways, this series is better suited for slightly older audience members who will pick up on the subtleties of the clever writing and characterizations that will go unnoticed by younger viewers. Because of that, I really doubt your children will grow up to be the next Aleister Crowley. If anything, they wouldn't join, a cultism, because how much, the show makes fun of secrets societies. Plus, the show doesn't take any of the dark material that serious. After all, there is a video game in the intro for Contra, a video game on the NES system. It's rather hilarious, how much people take this show, a little too seriously. Other problems, people have against this episode and show is the fact, that the animation isn't the best, some of the frame was missing features, the voice acting needed some more work as some of the voices are jarring, and the fact, that the producers already limited themselves to a few episodes. However, if you can look past that, I guarantee that you will find yourself, having fun with these slightly irreverent unusual characters in the following episodes. Like me, you will fall in love with Gravity Falls. It's just that good.

Gravity Falls Revisited
gravityfalls-1272926 March 2016
Disney's "Gravity Falls" ended this past February, and I decided that I should rewatch the entire series, from beginning to end, to see if my opinion is any different from what it originally was. I loved watching the show when it aired and I was really hoping it would still hold up. And, from "Tourist Trapped," I can honestly say that I still feel the same sense of mystery and wonder that I did the first time. From the very first scene of Dipper and Mabel crashing through the Gravity Falls sign in a golf cart, this episode kept me hooked. I hummed along to the theme song, and somehow still knew all the lines of dialogue in the episode. In case you're new to the series (you're in for a real treat), this episode deals with twins Dipper and Mabel Pines being sent to spend the summer with their Great Uncle ("Grunkle") Stan in Gravity Falls, Oregon, but much more happens than that. Dipper is a curious and intelligent adventurer, while Mabel is a creative and optimistic goofball and Stan is their grouchy and law-breaking but caring uncle. All of them get their characters fleshed out later, but mystery is the main focus here. Dipper thinks it will just be another boring summer and Mabel just wants to have an epic summer romance, but when Dipper finds a mysterious journal in the woods the plot thickens. The twins begin to realize that all is not what it seems and that this sleepy little town has some big secrets, including that Mabel's first boyfriend, Norman, may or may not be a zombie. This is the first episode of the show, and it does a great job of setting up what's to come. It's funny, it's mysterious, and it does a fantastic job. I loved seeing all the familiar faces (and Rock-That- Looks-Like-a-Face Rock: The Rock That Looks Like a Face), but what really surprised me was the mystery elements. Having watched the whole show, I can say that the mystery doesn't quite carry all the way through but here it's at the fore. The shocking ending will have you begging for more, and the various creatures of the journal really pull you in. I can't believe how well this episode still gets me excited for more. My grade: 92/100 (A-).

Warning: Spoilers
This was a very funny and strange beginning to a funny and strange show. During a time when Disney channel has been giving some awful shows (etc. Fred, Icarly). this show was soon released onto Disney XD and I loved it anyways back the review. This episode introduced me to many great characters my top 3 characters Soos, Mabel and Stan. The twist still makes me laugh anytime I see it I mean gnomes are what Mabel's strange boyfriend. Really do think this is a good pilot episode. This then evolved into a entirely good show. this is definitely one of my favorite Disney XD shows. I just recommend this episode enough.

I now get the fuss
CharlottaG28 April 2016
I've heard a lot about this series and so I thought it was time to get my hands on it, the best decision I've made in a while. This pilot is one of the better ones I've seen; it differs a bit from the rest of the episodes but it does so to really show the series potential and wide spectrum when it comes to age specific humour. I should probably mention that I am no fan of Disney shows nor cartoons or animated series in general, so an 8/10 rating on this show (which fits into both above named categories) is a great deal. The thing that I think contributes the most to making this such a great pilot is the humour. A seven-year-old can enjoy it for it's silliness and goofiness, but a 20-, 30- or even 40-year-old can enjoy it just the same thanks to the witty and sometimes dark comedy hidden between the frames. It also manages to capture people of all ages's interest with the beginning of a great mystery...

Totally got me to want to watch more, as a pilot should do.

The First Episode of the Wonderful Gravity Falls.
Hello there again and Today I'm going to review the First episode of My Favorite show as of December 6, 2014 called Gravity Falls. I already reviewed one Favorite episode of Gravity Falls which is Carpet Diem where Dipper and Mabel switch bodies. So anyway the episode I'm going to review is called episode Tourist Trapped where Dipper and Mabel are getting settled in Gravity Falls and Mabel is dating a boy who Dipper thinks is a Zombie. So he tries to tell her that she dating a zombie but Mabel doesn't believe him. So it up to Dipper to save his sister from a zombie but it's actually a bunch gnomes who want to marry Mabel so Dipper comes to save Mabel from Gnomes and they turn in to a monster to get Dipper and Mabel and in the end they defeat the gnome monster. BOTTOM LINE this a great start to the show 10/10 stars. PS Dipper and Mabel are my Favorite characters. Updated as of September 9,2015.

'Welcome to Gravity Falls'
aquilessiqueira8 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A simple episode that works with accuracy to introduce everything basic we have to see on the show, since the bright, dark, funny and mysterious sides that Gravity Falls would have in the future.

The characters are so likable, their gags and special scenes works on a drop of the dime that chooses the protagonists and secondary characters of each scene and the episode in general.

The act 1 of the story introduces two objective sides of the twins (Dipper finding something that finally interesses him and Mabel trying to have a 'Epic Summer Romance'), makes the story begin in each sides, and then each sides complement themselfs to tell the other acts that haves a expectation breaking points that moves the story to the opposite rail which we think it's going to happen, and to change the rail they use of funny elements we've seen before, as like the moment where Dipper shows the Gnomes' page to Mabel, or the Leaf Vacuum scene, and also there are somepoints that an mystery is introduced to be concluded on the future, and all that happens without plot holes or unnecessary stuff, all of it works in a fluent slide that maintains intact till the end of the episode.

Also the production here is phenomenal; the animation, music, voices, scenarios, etc. They are all so well done, and passes the atmosphere which scene promises.

With all that in mind, this episode in a word is entertaining, a good way to introduce some of the elements we would see later.

Welcome to Gravity Falls.

So Much Charm!
injury-6544715 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I've had Gravity Falls on my to-watch list for ages. I never knew what it was about so this first episode was a really pleasant surprise for me. I had heaps of fun watching it and getting a feel for the show.

The premise of the show itself is wonderful. The idea of a brother and sister exploring a weird & strange new town out near a spooky forest is awesome. The possibilities for episode ideas are practically endless.

The animation style is gorgeous and crisp. Each frame is so beautiful to look at and admire.

For a first episode this story is amazingly good. The majority of the jokes land really well and I was genuinely laughing out loud with glee a lot of the time. They plant the idea of gnomes as a joke early on, and it's genius when they reveal the truth. Totally unexpected.

Dipper is a fabulous character to have as the lead. He has a perfect mix of curiosity, adventure and scepticism and I found him to be really charming. I can't wait for him to discover more about the town.

Mabel is obviously our more "quirky" offbeat character. I'll admit I found her a bit annoying at times, but she works well in small doses and as a contrasting personality to her brother Dipper.

Uncle Stan is fantastic. He obviously doesn't put a lot of stock in parental supervision.

I love the final scene with Uncle Stan showing us that more mysteries await (and that he knows more than he's letting on).
