An odd film, that's for sure!
This is one of the stranger films I have seen in some time. Back in September, 1913, a group of mostly Mexican-Americans were smuggling arms to the Mexican Revolutionaries--which violated US neutrality laws. During their second such trip, they were discovered and they captured a sheriff and his deputy. During their captivity, the deputy was murdered and the sheriff was eventually rescued. Later, he testified against the men who committed the murder. Now here is where it gets weird--Sheriff Buck soon started his own production company and filmed a recreation of these events and the film was in theaters only months later! The film has a look of a documentary and many of the people played themselves in the film. One of the more interesting is the local preacher--a guy who had no problem joining a posse and mixing it up with the bandits. However, despite this and an awfully grisly killing in the film, the overall product is actually pretty dull. I think most of this is due to the film's length. At 41 minutes, it's very long for 1914 and probably could have been tightened up a bit to make it more watchable. At 20 minutes or so, I think it would have been a lot better. Overall, it's passable and mostly a film die-hard silent film fans would enjoy and not too many others.
By the way, if you do see the film, note the image seen through the binoculars--it's completely wrong.
