A solid opening episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Elderly Mima Wilson is shot dead outside her remote house, discovered by her grandson, PC Sandy Wilson. On the case is DI Jimmy Perez. Mima's land was being used by an archaeological team, who dig up something rather unexpected. One of the diggers, Hattie, who used to chat to Mima plans to inform Jimmy of a vital piece of evidence, but she too is killed. Plenty of suspects, including the dig leader, Paul Berglund, who had a fling with Hattie. There is wayward relative Ronald, as well as Mima's son, Joseph, none have alibis.

A solid introduction to Shetland, it's an interesting story, with some interesting characters. Henshall steals every scene he's in, no wonder he won a BAFTA for his performance, he is outstanding, fair to say he's a cut above most of the others. A shame Gemma Chan was cut down so quickly.

The scenery is breathtaking, such a beautiful place. You can't help but watch in awe. 7/10

Conflicted review

Warning: Spoilers
Although third in the series of books, this teleplay based on it was the first to be shown. It sort of follows the plot but moves the action from the smaller island of Whalsey to Bressay for no obvious reason, except maybe it was closer to Lerwick and easier for Perez to get to quickly. The TV character of Tosh does not appear in the book, but is a welcome addition to the show. Some of the characters in the book were omitted but the biggest difference was the identity of the killer.

This was mostly interesting because it is set on one of the smaller islands so the atmosphere is more claustrophobic and the characters involved are all interrelated. In the book Sandy is less mature but has grown from the first two books. Watching the TV version after just finishing the book was disconcerting since a viewer might keep comparing the two versions, and thinking "that's not right."

This was one of the better eoisodes,in the the early seasons, before the bbc turned it into a many week borefest until the solution.if I went to the cinema I wouldn't expect the cinema manager to tell me I had to come back 6 times to find out who did it.but that's what the bbc are doing.i never watch the series now.thank you bbc for ruining yet another good drama.

Red Bones: Part 1
Prismark1030 March 2024
Ann Cleeves famous for her Vera Stanhope novels. Also writes the Shetland mysteries featuring Jimmy Perez.

Whereas ITV adapted Vera, the BBC opted for Shetland.

The first part of Red Bones begins with the murder of elderly Mima Wilson. It was PC Sandy Wilson who found the body of her grandfather.

DI Perez is sure that someone in the Wilson family is responsible for the murder. The Wilsons are divided into two families. One of the families is much wealthier.

An archaeological dig taking place on Mima's land has unearthed a piece of skull.

Perez learns that a developer was interested in purchasing Mima's land.

Also During World War 2, the Wilson family were helping refugees escaping from Norway which was occupied by the Nazis. However someone had betrayed them. There have been rumours for years that the Shetlanders took their own revenge against the traitor.

The first episode really shows off the landscape of Shetland. It has intriguing relationship between Perez and his daughter Cassie.

As to the central mystery. There are a range of suspects. PC Wilson is not happy that his father is considered as a suspect. However it seems another dead body might emerge soon before the story is concluded.
