- Phryne investigates the murder of Marcella Lavender, poisoned with prussic acid and found dead in her office at Women's Choice magazine where she was editor and wrote a popular series of stories. She was also the magazine's agony aunt, responding to readers seeking advice, though that was supposed to be a secret. Phryne's former teacher, Regina Charlesworth, is the magazine's new editor and has no idea who might have wished her harm. The magazine itself. however, has received threats, and Regina thinks someone has it in for them.
