Netflix: please stop saying North America is the world
andrslopz5 November 2022
Why does Netflix keep saying "the best of the world" and the contestants are only from the US and Canada? I was expecting participants from famous party cities around the world. The format is good: first a general challenge that involves cooking and preparing a cocktail based on a specific criteria, and based on the cocktail presented the people who the judges consider are not good enough go straight to the elimination challenge. It is nice that they explain everything that they are going to do. I love that the show presents key concepts on screen when it seems to be an unknown object/term. In general it's a nice and entertaining show to watch if you like alcohol and learn about it.

Needs a bit more insight on Scoring
Macdonaldmichael4 November 2022
Many of the bartenders that we enjoyed got dismissed prematurely, I think it would have helped to have more transparency in the scoring so that we can better understand why our contenders were ejected.

I personally disagreed with the discharge of 3 specific individuals, and found that 3 other individuals were kept on too long. I found the final winner to be a bit 'safe' and unexciting - though I wondered if their drinks were especially 'tasty' which is completely subjective. Their drinks tended to be visually mild - but maybe the tastes were superior?

I think the show has immense potential and I'd love to see more history about the spirits provided. I would also welcome a website hosted by the showrunners offering drink recipes, technique videos, and so on.

Love the idea.....

Warning: Spoilers
I've finished episode 4 and I've definitely gained a whole new level of appreciation for the art of mixology. I love the challenges and the creativity. That being said.....the elimination process is a bit of a head-scratcher. How one contestant who has shown ingenuity since the start gets eliminated after 1 bad cocktail when another contestant who has consistently received the same feedback every episode for his drinks (too dry and unbalanced) skates by again and again is really infuriating. Hoping the judging is more fair and consistent going forward, but right now, it does seem like they are playing favorites.

Surprise surprise
PrinceCharmingHere5 November 2022
Netflix really does have a way with screwing up these unique competition shows (Blown Away) to fit their agenda to the point where it's so blatant and obvious and almost a turn off that you don't even want to watch anymore. Every elimination is carefully calculated and not solely based on who did the best, worst, whether it was their second time in the bottom or first, whether they keep underperforming, etc. It's about being as inclusive as possibly throughout the duration of the show. Let's be real, recently, shows like this are skewed towards minorities advancing onward. It's about making the underrepresented represented. Which is a good thing, but when it starts to become more about representation then who did better in a challenge, that's when it gets frustrating. I myself am gay, and this is something I've picked up on. In the first episode, I already knew the people who would get picked off in the beginning and the ones who would go far solely based on their edit and their sob stories about what a challenge it is for them to work in a male and straight and white dominated industry. In that moment, it no longer became a show about skill and talent. Let people compete naturally and be judged and eliminated fairly, or let them judge the cocktails blind. Other than that, the show looks good and the drinks are cool and the show has a nice flow and concept.

Visually beautiful but...
chissysweetz15 November 2022
In terms of cinematography and visually pleasing elements, I was very entertained. The concept is exciting and unfamiliar which is what pulled me to the show to begin with.

Despite offering me a mindless, fun watch, I believe many, many things could have been better excited. As many other reviewers mentioned, there should have been more transparency regarding the way the judges marked the drinks.

Two, and this comes out very, very obviously to a non-American viewer, but there's a blatant sort of play on minorities, identity and marginalised groups. This is not strictly a bad thing, but when it comes to the marking, it becomes apparent that there's some agenda in the play. This is a competition. It should depend entirely on skills and concepts and very, very, VERY little on background.

I felt like the elimination process was not entirely fair. There were some really strong competitors unfairly knocked out in the early battles, and some who I was frankly shocked to see advance.

Lastly, for the finals, the least likely competitor won and I could not understand it. Some pointed out she played the race card, and perhaps that could hold some truth to it, but regardless of that, there was only one display that truly and clearly blew the judges away, and blew us the viewers away, so unique and creative, and somehow didn't win. I'm simply shocked, there could have only been this one winner.

Over all, entertaining show, but I sense some bias and the ending was far too abrupt for the build up.

Enjoyable show, lovely competitors, fair judges
tatianaeret14 January 2023
As a person who secretly & 'amateuri-ashly' enjoys making cocktails and also loves spending time watching some competitions I was nicely surprised by this one.

Not only it was a visually compelling and easy to watch show but also I learned quite a few new tricks shared by the participants.

I cannot agree with the reviewers saying that the judges did a bad job. Seeing quite a lot of similar shows I can say most of them were judged much worse. I really did enjoy the show and the elimination seemed quite fair to me. Also, the judges gave some insightful information, shared why each person was chosen and generally had a really lovely attitude towards the mixologists.

Sooo predictable...
alex_madskills4 November 2022
Pros: cinematography, when they present the cocktail is top notch. You can learn from the diversity of these drinks and it's amazing how they combine some elements. And that's where the good part ends.

Cons: everything else. The judges, maybe they are good in their line of work but Frankie is talking like a shaolin priest, no emotions, no passion, way too chill for this. Then we have the...agenda with the contestants. You know who's gonna win and who's gonna reach far in the show sooo easy! And no, not by their skill. And this kills all the fun unfortunately. Is it that hard to do a show based exclusively on REAL talent instead of ethnicity???

Great Concept But.....
Aashna1631 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Being an avid fan of culinary reality tv and shows like Masterchef, Netflix's new show Drink Masters seemed right up my alley.

A lovely show, a unique concept and an interesting watch. The visuals looked stunning, the drinks looked delicious, and the contestants were top notch. However, the judges seemed like they really needed some lessons in judging. They praised a particular contestant and the next thing you know it, they're out! It was appalling and frustrating to watch Aisling being eliminated while Suzu skated through the semi-finale. The finale lacked the feels & flair of being the finale. The winner was just announced, without any build up, drama or overall excitement. It seemed like Tone and the judges were just ready to pack it all up and go home.

While I may not be so pleased with the finale results, all the contestants and the winner worked hard to achieve this glorious win. They deserved a bit more appreciation, interest and spotlight.

All done and said, it was still worth a watch!

Great Potential but Judges Fall Short
siegfriedmludwig5 February 2023
Overall I enjoyed watching this show. The atmosphere was good, the drinks were beautiful and the sound design really brought out that component of making cocktails. I was impressed with the range of ingredients and techniques on display.

There was a strong impression that the contestants had time to prepare before each of the challenges to make a plan, and potentially even to organize the availability of their inhredients. How the hell would they have hay just lying around on the shelf?

The one thing that stood out very negatively was the way the judges' comments were utilized. They need to be a core ingredient to the show, as their descriptions are the only way we as the viewer can really experience these cocktails. Often the comments were cut too short and decisions were not explained enough. This is especially true for the final judgement, which came without any explanation whatsoever. Personally, I felt like one of the other finalists should have won (no spoilers). But most importantly, the decision should have been explained much more transparently.

Predictable
powellmblake31 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Was really getting into this contest. Saw some amazing cocktails that I would have loved to have tried. However, when Aisling, who was continually a top tier threat, was voted off in favor of Suzu, who was continually skirting by the skin of his teeth, it was so transparent that what they were really doing was keeping the final group as diverse as possible. I quit watching immediately. If the body of your work does not account for anything in a show like this, then the show has nothing to do with who make a killer cocktail the best. The show is only about keeping a larger audience. The show had a lot of promise though. May pick it back up later but that ticked me off.

Amazingly Talented Competitors
ForeverLake23 November 2022
Ignore the bad reviews about race or the judges. This show is about the drinks and these people are way above your local bar tenders. They are truly chefs creating exceptionally unique and overly ambitious cocktails that most wouldn't dare try at home. I was enthralled by their processes and wanted to not only learn more but try every, single, drink! It's a reality game show. Watch it for what it is and focus on what they're doing in the kitchen. My only complaint is they skim over the ingredients so quickly it's impossible to take it all in. Focus less on the drama and more on the drinks. Salute.

Not sure yet...
wiz_glen29 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure if this show is worth to continue watching. I am up to Episode 5 now. I had to stop and take a break because I am not liking how the contestants were being eliminated: Natalie, Raj, Meredith, and Aisling. I am shocked with the judges' choice of words by saying one thing and then eliminate the better person? That doesn't make sense. I am started to think if this show was fixed or favoritism. Are the judges being fair or are they trying to get rid of the best ones and keep the bad ones for the audiences? I don't know. I haven't seen the end yet, then I will express how I feel about it.

Okay I have seen episode 5 and 6, they are becoming too predictable of who is being eliminated. I am not liking it. I feel bad for Kapri and Michael. They were better than their opponents. I am still not finished watching the rest. I wouldn't be too surprised who won because I can tell the body language of the judges and host who they are rooting for. Who know? I may be wrong but I think I will finish watch the rest of the episodes later and see what happens.

Very predictable
lukaszstozek-329405 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It was obvious that LP was going to win. Not because she was the best, but because she had been propped up all the way, for whatever reason. This seriously is very disappointing as this should be about the skill and creativity, and not about race etc.

From around episode 5, it was in you face that she was just being pushed through. In the final episode there was no surprise, no deliberation. Actually looking at the final 6, I personally think there were more skilled and talented mixologists that have been eliminated, even when LP was making mistakes. It seriously looks like this was scripted, scripted and known form the beginning. That said, I wish all the best to all the contestants.

Questioning the real competences of the judges...
cathysun31 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am at the third episode so far and it is really captivating. Love the creativity of the contestants! What a cocktail can actually be! It is more than I could ever thought doing with it. The show feels authentic. Only judging by the visuals of the cocktails I would love to try each and everyone of them!

BUT I am questioning the competences of the judges after all, if they seem to not know that a so called gooseberry in the fruit episode, is actually a physalis?!? Then what the hack where the base of their judgment on that one then? Cause the taste and hence their expectations/ imagination is of course a different one.....

Judging inconsistent but wildly entertaining
parisryn6 January 2023
They eliminated the top challenge winner too early on and kept people clinging to the bottom week after week. But these cocktail artisans are incredible, visually stunning and marvelous to watch. And Tone is hilarious!

Suggestions for next season: STOP over editing. -Show us more of the contestants vibing after challenges backstage (we want to see friendships and alliances born behind the scenes!) -like project runway and top chef. Easier to route for people and get inspired as viewers this way!

-Have more clear and consistent judging criteria. Felt muddled and not in a delicious mojito way.

Wow so predictable ans ignorant of the JUDGES
bryanallen-4105531 October 2022
To get rid of one of the best competitors and POSSIBLY THE WINNER of the show is ridiculous. I also done watching because it's not about the best clearly and she was only on the bottom because she had to be in a team with challengers that was on the bottom all the time and instead of realizing this and she had one multiple challenges is so stupid and ignorant. And it's clear people feel the same as I do based on the review above me. Shows make money based in how many viewers and you just lost another one. I am done. Maybe if she would have been LBGQ or something she would have not been eliminated it. Her technique was flawless and she did everything by taking risks and it made the show awesome to watch until she left. What's sad is just by reading this review most people who watch the show can guess the ne of the person I am talking about.

What is with the American arrogance?
hilary_mae-912-8056110 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Rather fun, but I couldn't take this show seriously at all. This is not to say the contestants were not talented, but I'm sick of the Americans touting themselves as best in the world. It's a ridiculous level of ego to appease the masses in that country. It they travelled around the world they would discover that they are NOT the top in all things.

In the first episode, it's "welcome to the worlds greatest bar"....in other words....the pretty studio we built in a large warehouse like building.

Anytime they mentioned a country other than the USA, I was shocked to realize they actually did know the globe has more than them on it.

The judging should have been transparent. If they wanted precision, then show the judging as being based on precision. Let's see the points.

As usual they tossed in one contestant, Kate, who had a nasty mouth and made snide comments about people behind their backs and then thinks rainbows, and unicorn glitter shoots out of her you-know-what. She wore her badge of jealousy pinned front and centre. It was repellant to see her undisguised jealousy of the woman, who ultimately became the winner. Shameful. It's people like that who ruin these shows.

The host, tone somebody, dreadful vocabulary and slang speak, low class to no class who called all the drinks blank-a$$. Is he 12? Referring to himself in the third person was absurd as was talking gangsta all the time.

The contestants do have a lot of knowledge, but we can't see it with the cameras swooping in and out as it plays with bokeh lighting and trying to appear special. The depth of their knowledge and skill doesn't come out until the last few episodes, but they really do have it. I was behind the winner from the first episode. She's a quiet, gracious lady with class. She never said a bad word about anyone and never bragged or acted the fool. Her knowledge and skill is tops; a true scientist. She deserved the win.

Loved this show, and Tone!
david-tolmie11 January 2023
I really enjoyed the show! The cocktails were impressive and drool worthy to watch being created, with so many talented and creativity bartenders. The contestants stories as you got to know them through each episode were what kept me hooked and tuning in each night. I definitely became invested in their journeys.

Some reviews suggest the judging was unfair.

Personally I found the comments on point and agreed with the decisions for the most part. All finalists were incredibly impressive and would have been worthy winners.

Also big shout out for the host Tone- great charisma! Bring on season 2! Loved it, get mixing!

A Very Tired Formula
dcnfwrsgb11 January 2023
Just as police and legal procedural dramas get really tired after a while, so do food and (in this case) beverage competition shows. Same old, same old, this time with a slate of bartenders plucked from among the widely known to the barely known. Challenges, eliminations, teams, scoring, skills bits, sprints, countdowns with sweaty closeups, the balcony, hyped inter-competitor tensions ... all of it. The set even looks like one of Gordon Ramsay's. I'll confess to having binge-watched most seasons of too many such shows. In fact, one is playing on my bedroom TV as I write this. Drink Masters, however, has less to work with in many respects than the food shows. It's harder to connect with some of the concoctions, beautiful though some of them may appear. It tends to creep too much into cooking, too, with presentations moving primarily from cocktails to drinks with side dishes as the episodes progress. Entirely different skills, and it's kind of odd watching bartenders prepare food. Match drinks to food, sure, but cook it? The focus is spirits, not wine or beer, which make appearances as ingredients on occasion. I suppose this leaves things open to wine and beer competition shows, but as beer consumption (at least) is roughly 10x that of spirits, it certainly wouldn't have a relatability issue! One bit of advice to the producers: it's a non-sequitur to pop a champagne bottle at the end of a spirits-based show. Y'ought to crack open a bottle of 50 year-old scotch or something instead. With prize money in the 6 figures, you can afford it.

Inorganic judging
IAmKMaz8 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The concept of the show is cool and the creations made are really neat. The judging is really bad and as other reviewers note; is done to fit an agenda rather than taking skill and talent into account. Realistically, Kate should have won having blown away every challenge thrown at her, her passion for the industry and her knowledge and ingenuity in the craft. As you get further in the series, you can tell it doesn't matter because LP will win to fit the 2020s theme of "black excellence." She is a great artist but any unbiased judge would agree Kate is the clear winner. Unfortunately, inorganic experiences are the standard across Netflix series.

Great Then Awkward
CandaceA19845 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed most of the show it was great to watch the bartenders grow in their creativity. However, towards the last episode the animosity Kate was displaying towards LP made it very awkward to watch. LP seemed so beaming with energy and excitement up until what appears to be Kate's distaste that she was safe instead of Alex.

Though LP's drink was not literal black & white, she utilised black and white components in her drink and up until then clearly a strong mixologist and far superior than many of her opponents including Kate.

When LP succeeded to the semifinal round, even then Kate couldn't muster proper sportsmanship, it made you pause: What's going on and what is her problem?

On that alone she deserved to exit and be completely eliminated. No one likes bullies.

To sully LP's skills with comments on race is just small minded and clearly some bitter "fans".

There were several other competitors that far outmatched the "sour loser" in creativity, ingenuity and showmanship.

Awesome show

Warning: Spoilers
Saw a lot of reviews about LP not deserving of her win and she was just given because she's African American. If that's the case, so be it. I watch a lot of these shows and the first set of people they kick out are people of color, so back off!. Meanwhile, none of you tasted the drinks and they judged based on presentation, taste, andcreativity, so maybe the taste worked. Judging by the comments of the judges from the start, they really loved her work. If Alex was not kicked out in the first round, neither should LP because of her color glitch. Y'all are just angry because an Afri American won.

Are you serious, judges.
elmuniz26 March 2023
This show is definitely a great show no doubt, however, i do not think that they are judging correctly. The "Crowned" drink master was NOT the correct choice. Over the competition the other contestents have constantly pushed and fought there way to be there with them but none of the previous challenges were taken into a whole for the final decision. This decision should have have been based on there performance during the entire competition. If you were to consider the whole competition and talents brought out during the season, there was a ABSOLUTE clear winner and it was NOT who they crowned.

It's not really a fair competition and the judges are just incompetent
ekwok888-725-79650415 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As with any game shows, the quality of the judges determines the quality of the show. Netflix didn't really showcase what accomplishments these judges have and why are they so much more superior than the contestants. For example, RuPaul is undoubtably the best in her field and she IS the Mama Ru, or Gordon Ramsey is also very good in what he does. In contrast, who are these mediocre judges, and we need them to explain the rationale of their decisions, for example, why a red cocktail can win in a black & white competition ! When it's so evident that the competition is not fair and the judges are incompetent or just puppets doing what the network tell them to do without any professional judgements of their own, the entire show becomes a farce and ugly. It's painful to watch this biased debacle and the 2 "judges" pretending to know what they are doing. I feel so bad for the competitors who are really more talented and professional than those 2 clowns. The best thing that the male judge is capable of is to put nitrogen in the drinks when he refused to drink the same thing from Alex in the first game. It's beyond rigged and it's so distasteful and ugly and dirty. The judges should be ashamed of themselves and should apologize to all the contestants. I don't understand why Netflix keeps on getting these unprofessional and stupid people to act as judges, this formula will never be successful in making a good and popular game show.

what's with the favoritism?
canisthya29 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I know Tone Bell from that romcom that made him pair with Kristen Bell.. can't remember the name tho.

Anyway! This first drink-based competition by Netflix is interesting in its own twist. I like that the bartenders/mixologists are very creative, putting out beautiful, colorful and magical looking drinks. I don't drink alcohol so I am not judging on what would taste good or not since I don't even know the difference of each spirit.. let alone all the fancy techniques they're doing, but I learn a lot!

So it actually deserves 7 starts for the education but I need to cut one short because of the ending. We all know, other reviewers know, that Tao/Kate must have won. Personally I'd vote for Tao because he masters that distill technique since the early episodes. But LP won?! What. I think she already show incompetence since the color challenges. Kate said it herself too. I can't believe the show don't really acknowledges real talent.

From the other contestants, I like Suzu but I also think he should've left earlier in the elimination challenge..

if they do second season, hopefully the judging will be more objective.
