Exclusive: New Amsterdam fans who were left wanting more when the NBC series concluded its run after 5 seasons last year, may have something new to look forward to.
Series creator, executive producer and showrunner David Schulner is developing a spinoff series at NBC set 30 years after the events of the original series. Tentatively titled New Amsterdam: Tomorrow, it follows Dr. Max Goodwin’s (Ryan Eggold) daughter, Luna Goodwin, who steps into her father’s role as Medical Director of New Amsterdam Hospital.
The potential sequel, which is expected to explore the ways artificial intelligence would help advance the medical industry in the future, was set up in the New Amsterdam series finale. It introduced a young and enthusiastic new medical director, played by Molly Griggs, at the beginning of the episode who was revealed at the end to be Max’s daughter, Luna Goodwin, as an adult in flash-forwards.

Earlier, Sundance announced that its 2022 edition will be hybrid. Most titles will be available online while their in-person festivities start up again in Park City. Their main slate has just gone live as well. Though the festival has a tendency to update their lineup as the festivities grow closer, their competition categories have at least been set in stone.

Paramount Players has optioned eight novels from author Gregg Hurwitz’s “Marked Man” series of books, with plans to adapt them for a series of feature films.
The division of the ViacomCBS-owned studio, run by Jeremy Kramer, is eyeing lower budgets for the contemporary noir thrillers and specifically looking for diverse and perhaps first-time writers and directors to create the world.
Hurwitz is the bestselling author of “Orphan X” and will produce the films alongside Emmy winner Scott Frank, producer of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit.” The latter brought the books to the studio. While not connected by a central character, Hurwitz’s novels are among the most praised of the pot-boiler genre — usually invoking heinous crimes or geopolitical intrigue. The film adaptations are said to be connected thematically.
Full titles being optioned include “Do No Harm,” “The Crime Writer,” “Trust No One,” “They’re Watching,” “You’re Next,” “The Survivor,...

Born in New Zealand to a family of Chinese doctors, action maven Roseanne Liang describes herself as a “classic immigrant-child overachiever” who’d never questioned that she was destined to become a doctor until she got into medical school.
She deferred her acceptance for a year and decided to take classes that aligned more closely with her personal interests. “I was obsessed with Pixar and computer animation, so I did computer science and film theory,” says Liang, whose “Shadow in the Cloud” blends CG gremlins with a feminist action hero.
A big fan of Weta, Liang watches “Terminator 2” every year and dreams of directing a James Cameron-esque extravaganza.
Upon discovering her passion, she switched tracks and pursued a master’s in film. In school, “I was writing vampire and action movies,” she says, but at the advice of a professor, “I took a detour into moviemaking that was more accessible to me,...

‘Shadow in the Cloud’: Roseanne Liang Turned a Max Landis Script Into Her Own Feminist Monster Movie
Roseanne Liang is intentional about her ambitions: she wants to be a big-time action director, and what better way to prove her abilities than a rip-roaring genre movie that combines zippy action with plenty of winking humor? Enter the World War II-set “Shadow in the Cloud,” the Kiwi’s first action feature — she’s previously written and directed the winning rom-com “My Wedding and Other Secrets” and the lauded drama short “Do No Harm” — which functions as both a punchy midnight movie and a prime example of how an indie-sized budget can still deliver wild action.
Liang’s film makes it clear early on that it’s operating on its own wavelength, combining both a “war is hell” mentality alongside cheeky creature feature jokes. At the center of it all is Maude Garrett (Chloë Grace Moretz), a British flight officer zipping her way toward a jittery B-17.

Meryl Streep is already the most honored actor at the Golden Globes with eight competitive wins. She’s expected to bag a record-extending ninth statuette for “Big Little Lies” in Best TV Supporting Actress, which would be the fifth category she’s won and would put her just two categories shy of sweeping all seven actress awards at the Globes.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association hands out three awards for female performers on the film side, Best Drama Actress, Best Comedy/Musical Actress and Best Supporting Actress, and four for television, Best TV Drama Actress, Best TV Comedy/Musical Actress, Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress and Best TV Supporting Actress. Streep has won all three film categories; in fact, seven of her eight Globes are for her big-screen work, and the eighth was for her lead turn in the 2003 HBO miniseries “Angels in America.”

In the upcoming movie Five Feet Apart, a pair of teenagers fall in love, even though they can't be together. Classic romantic movie trope - but this time, the reason they're kept apart isn't teen angst or family rules: it's an incurable genetic disease. If you're wondering what the meaning of the title is, look no further. We've got a crash course for you.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects the cells in the body that produce the body's secretions, according to the Mayo Clinic. A defective gene causes secretions - such as mucus, sweat, and digestive fluids - to be thick, rather than the thin consistency they're supposed to be. As a result, these secretions start to plug up important pathways in the body, particularly affecting the lungs and pancreas. Because of this, people diagnosed with cystic fibrosis are prone to chronic infections - which is what...

"Savages" is a slightly more successful version of the narrative Outlander attemped to gracefully tell in "Do No Harm": what it looks like when people with power (Claire and Jamie) are faced with the horrific, unjust consequences of the hierarchy that gives them power. The fourth season of Starz's Outlander pushes Claire and Jamie further into uncharted territory in colonial America and offers a chance to meet several new characters. Some of them, like the nefarious pirate Stephen Bonnet, cannot be trusted. Some, like Jamie's Aunt Jocasta, are trying to keep the peace as best they can in this new land and new set of rules. Some, like Rollo the dog, are just plain adorable.
And then there's John Quincy Myers. First introduced in season four's second episode, "Do No Harm," the character is played by Welsh actor Kyle Rees. He's a jovial, hairy delight who can both educate the new Americans on the proper way to respect the Cherokee tribespeople who already call this land home and serve as another mentor to Jamie's nephew Ian (John Bell), who must be aching to talk to someone who isn't a relative by now. Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Do No Harm,” the second episode of “Outlander” Season 4.
In the wake of Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers) robbing Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) in the “Outlander” season four premiere, the weary travelers still managed to make it to River Run, a stunning North Carolina plantation run by Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy), who was left blind by glaucoma. Jamie was slightly ashamed to show up penniless, but Jocasta welcomed them with open arms. Still, it was not an easy road as almost immediately Claire and Jamie experienced what it was like to see slaves working such land up close and personal.
And Jocasta’s motives were not entirely selfless anyway. She knew that it would benefit her to have a man like Jamie around. Remember, this was 1767 — Jocasta was definitely fending off advances from men...

In the second installment of our ongoing video series, senior editor Rob Licuria and “Outlander” fan Paula Licuria dish the highs and lows of each episode. Our weekly analysis covers Season 4, based on “Drums of Autumn,” Diana Gabaldon’s fourth novel in the series of books (watch above).
In “Do No Harm,” the second episode of season four of the Starz hit drama “Outlander,” slated for November 11, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) visit his Aunt Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy) at her plantation River Run. Claire immediately feels the pain of being a woman out of time surrounded by the oppression of slavery. Meanwhile, Jamie’s re-connection with his long lost aunt results in a public announcement that blindsides him and horrifies Claire. When tragedy strikes at the plantation, Jamie and Claire find themselves caught between what’s right and the law of the land, ultimately facing an impossible decision.

Jamie and Claire finally reach River Run in this week’s Outlander, and what they think will be a happy family reunion soon becomes something that makes Stephen Bonnet’s riverboat beat-down look like an amusement park ride.
There’s backhanded manipulation. There’s euthanasia. There’s overt, violent, stomach-turning racism with a brutal ending.

Outlander Season 4 Episode 2
Wow, there's a lot to unpack about this episode. Watching as a white viewer, some of the images shown in "Do No Harm" were deeply unsettling—I can only imagine what watching an episode like this might feel like for those who have been prejudiced against and persecuted for the color of their skin.
There are moments when the faithfulness of Outlander's TV adaptation work to make this series even stronger, and there are moments when the 1996-ness of the Drums of Autumn source material falls short of where our mainstream conversations about race and gender and imperialism fall short of where we are today. “Do No Harm” is one of those moments.
