Rome, the Eternal City. The diplomat Karla Lorenz is looking forward to her new place of work. As soon as she is on duty, the ambassador has to put protocol aside after an attack on an occupied theater: the young Ines, daughter of the building contractor Robert Felting, who works in Italy, and Karla's employee Nikolaus Tanz are in the hands of activist hostage-takers. The previously unknown group is demanding compensation for the victims of a house collapse for which they blame Robert Felting. Karla doesn't want to rely on the Roman chief investigator Motte, nor on the right-wing populist minister Romagnoli, who wants to make a name for himself at the expense of the supposed left-wing extremists. With the support of her life partner Jan, the ambassador investigates herself. She puts her hope in Ines' mother Sabine, of all people, who is supposed to obtain a missing report that may incriminate her husband.
