THE SILENT SERVICE "The Pargo's Lucky Seventh" 1958

This is the 61st episode of the U.S. war series, "The Silent Service". The series was about the exploits of the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet. Each episode is a stand-alone tale of the actions of a particular submarine. Most of the stories are about actions against the Japanese Navy and merchant fleet in the Pacific. There is also the odd tale from the Korean conflict. The series ran for 78 episodes during 1957 and 1958. The stories were all based on actual events. Some pretty good attention to detail here with the U.S Navy allowing filming on several WW 2 era Gato class subs.

Each episode started and ended with retired Real Admiral Thomas M. Dykers giving a breakdown of the action. Dykers became a writer, producer and technical adviser after leaving the service. He worked on films such as, TORPEDO ALLEY, FLAT TOP, THE FROGMEN, HELL AND HIGH WATER and SUBMARINE COMMAND.

This episode is about the U.S.S. "Pargo". It is early 1945 and the "Pargo" is hunting Japanese shipping in the Borneo area. The submarine is on the seventh patrol of its career. The submarine comes up on a small Japanese convoy and damages several merchant vessel. She then gets a rough ride from a severe depth charge attack by the escorting destroyers. The "Pargo" later comes up for a look and puts a couple of fish into the destroyer, "NoKaze", sinking her.

The "Pargo" is then sent to pick up a pair of Australian Commandos for transfer to a small Japanese held island. There are reports that several allied types are prisoners on the island. The Aussies slip ashore, dispose of a few guards and rescue a woman for return to the "Pargo". The deal here is that one of the commandos knows the woman from before the war.

The "Pargo" now heads back to Australia for repairs and to drop off their passengers.

The "Pargo" would complete eight patrols sinking 9 Japanese vessels worth 27,000 tons. The "Pargo" would be kept in service after the war as a training submarine.

The "Pargo' would finally be discarded in 1960 and sold for scrapping. The cast includes actual Aussie, Michael Pate as well as, Ross Ford, Sandy Kenyon, Barney Philips, and Charles Davis.
