Nice and Fluffy

I'm a late-comer to the series. Just started watching it this year. I had some free time to kill tonight and wanted to watch an episode but wasn't in the mood for the usual angst. This was great.

It hit the "what-if" spot that I have occasionally well up inside of me too. There was something very satisfying about the fate aspect of this episode. If you want something a little different from the normal style but still enjoyable... this was the episode for you.

One of my favorite episodes to revisit
dvs8866-123 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I actually enjoyed the alternate universe episode. Clever writing, fun directing, I love how each character eventually unravels. Bringing back Ellis as a mom who almost cares, and Chief as Dad-I'll forever wish these two had had their happy ending together. I kinda held back a sob seeing Mark carrying a half dead (overdosed) Lexie. The completely uncomfortable looking "kissing" between Karev and Meredith, if you want to call what these two actors who probably feel like siblings, kissing. Best line of the entire show, "shoot me already"....always gets a snort, no matter how many times I see it. Finishing at Joe's Bar, taking us back to the beginning of the show's pilot. A fun escape from the usual drama.

Meredith's Great Life
ZegMaarJus20 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This Episode begins with Meredith, she is talking with Zola. Meredith dreams about of what her life would have been. Meredith kissed with Alex, they form a couple in Meredith's dream. Ellis stole Bailey her whipple surgery. April kissed with Alex, Cristina saw it. Owen knocks his hand into the glass. Alex and Ellis perform a whipple surgery together. In Meredith's dream her surname is Webber, Richard's surname. Owen is together with Callie in Meredith's dream. Addison is pregnant, Mark is the father, this is also in Meredith's dream. Meredith and Derek meet each other at the bar. Nice Episode of Grey's Anatomy Season 8, a great dream about how Meredith her life would have been!

GREAT EPISODE
kiathros10 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Some people can be very lazy when watching a show. They don't think about the depths of the storyline or the ironies of in a story. Some are also close-minded and not creative enough to entertain different scenarios or alternate realities. That is maybe why some people who watched this episode did not like it. But to me, IT IS DEFINITELY IN THE TOP TEN BEST EPISODES. And it's one of the episodes I have watched again and again.

What's evident in this episode is the difference of relationships, who's with who, and it may seem random at first but when you analyze the pairings they actually make sense. It's possible for Callie and Owen to be together because they both want to have children. Avery would subtly be into Cristina because she STILL slays as a surgeon but also because she is not in a relationship and unlike in the reality, she does not outright reject him or tell him she's involved. Since Meredith is essentially a different person, the MAGIC friendship was not developed. Izzie and George wouldn't have anyone being there for them which is why their characters ended up worse than how they actually did. And we can totally see a Mer and April friendship, being the happy perfect girls they are. And like a butterfly effect, everything else falls in place. The Shepherds still in conflict with their marriage since Derek never had someone that actually motivated him to end his relationship with Addison. Lexie unfortunately gets the bad childhood and life. Way worse than how Meredith's actual life was.

I would commend the writers and anyone involved for coming up with this intricacies but really I applaud THE WRITERS. It's the subtle statements and small things that made it awesome for me. Like how for a while I felt bad that Teddy was not included in this episode and I thought the writers weren't able to fit her character in the storyline but later Callie brings her up not knowing she is a woman and thinking she is a close guy friend of Owen helping him with his trauma. Like WOAH. Owen wouldn't have her come to Seattle Grace because there was already a Cardio Surgeon PLUS think of the PAIN and STRESS of now knowing their friendship/relationship and having Teddy far from him in this reality. I feel so bad for Owen here. How stresseful it must be for him to try healing from his trauma whilst being worried about his kids. While watching I kept thinking about how things were plausible and aligning and it irked me that there was no suitable reason why Callie became a Cardiothoracic Attending instead of Ortho and lo and behold! In a short chitchat with Bailey she manages to share why and also make us realize how Ellis Grey was being controlling of everyone. I love the controntation scene with Meredith and Cristina (and other attendings) in the locker room. Such great writing and acting.

The ending is SO GREAT and POIGNANT! It takes us back to the start, with Yang pointing out what kind of friendship she and Mer would have and Mer with Derek becoming just the guy and the girl in the bar. Perfect!!!

And this episode deserves a review even just for Charles saying "Oh, just shoot me now." THAT WAS BOLD. And Ironic. I LOVED IT.

A fun episode
catmankellom16 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
When you have a show like Grey's Anatomy that has such a simple premise, you have the opportunity to do fun different episodes like this. Seeing Kate Burton's incredible acting is always a treat not to mention other characters that are no longer on the show such as Charles and Addison. In some ways this was almost more realistic to an actual hospital setting than the actual Seattle Grace hospital. Season 8 is an incredibly underrated season and this is one of the first episodes I think of.

Interesting premise poorly executed
ziejackson26 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I do love an alternate reality "what if" episode but most of these character revisions didn't make sense the only ones that did are Bailey's Derek's and Addisons and possibly Christina's, I don't see how callie would end up with hunt or grey with karev, it seems like they took the what if concept of greys mother being alive and then thought what crazy things can we do with these characters without thinking about it logically.

I just don't get this episode
Mohrwyn13 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I get it that people dream and I don't mind seeing dreams of characters once in a while, when it fits the story. But to make a whole episode with people at different ages then normally, in different roles and with different relationships.

Sorry, I really don't get it. I don't like the story, nor the idea. I've seen fun episodes, interesting episode, exciting episodes, dramatic episodes, good episodes and bad episodes.

But this one... I can't even say it's bad. It just seems not to be a part of the whole show. It's a story totally on itself and has got nothing to do with Grey's Anatomy at all.

Interesting idea, but should've been a 10 or 20 minute dream sequence in a normal episode.
irishboy1416 October 2019
I love alternate history and thinking about "what could've been", but man it really didn't work in this case...

It's an interesting idea, and it could have worked if it was a part of some "It's a Wonderful Life" type plot. Maybe Meredith could have wished to have a different life because she has a bad day, she wakes up in this alternate reality, and eventually wishes to return.

As it is however, it's a worthless filler episode. Nothing in this episode has an effect on the rest of the series, and according to the synopsis it was literally all a dream.... so it was a complete waste of time.

Didn't Care For This Episode

Warning: Spoilers
Lost interest because of swapping partners, bringing dead characters back, changing personalities. I know it was supposed to be all in a dream, but for me, it was a nightmare.

Could have worked, but didn't.
bellestar3-225-58720628 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The whole episode is based off of Meredith's life if Ellis never got sick and if she and Richard never broke up. It should have stuck with Meredith and how *her* life would be different. And they changed some lives, but not all of them. Why is Callie all of a sudden a fancy prissy overly make-uped Cardio surgeon, but Arizona is still in peds? I guess she and Owen could possibly work, but why change Callie's specialty? I think it would have made her and Owen's relationship a bit more believable is she was the same. He certainly was. And why was Alex Karev a suck-up brown nosing nerd? We already see the amazing man that Alex turns into. Why would dating Meredith instead of Izzie lobotomize his personality?

I also call bs on Lexie being a druggie. She grew up with a real family, complete with smiley face posters on the walls. Meredith tracked down Thatcher in season 1 to find out why he ditched. But she's Meredith Webber, not Meredith Grey. She wouldn't care about Thatcher. Susan and Thatcher went to Seattle Grace, because of Meredith. Who's to say she would have gotten bacterial endocarditis at Mercy West or Pac North? Plus she was already finishing up med school the season before she started her intern year at SG. How does she get from there to a pierced out tattooed pink haired drug addict? Because of her mom dying? She dug up her mom's dead, decaying cat from its little grave and buried her next to her mom! That girl is *not* going down the rabbit hole.

Some it really works, and those are the people that are directly affected from Meredith not being Meredith. Take Cristina. There's no "Twisted Sisters" without her. By Meredith being bright and shiny instead of dark and twisty, she and Cristina never bond. Cristina stays a hard-core cardio robot and never grows into the Cristina we know and love. The absolute *best* part was a miserable Derek and Addison, because it was perfect. Addison cheats. Derek goes to Seattle as planned. Buuut because Meredith doesn't "screw boys like whores on tequila" (love that line,) because she's happy, Derek *doesn't" meet and subsequent fall in love with Meredith aka "The girl in the bar." And then when Addison follows Derek to Seattle to win him back, there's no Meredith in the way, so they get back together. I think if they insisted on making it an hour long dream sequence, they should have stuck with Meredith.Could have worked, but didn't

Karev and Mer
janenek-4347130 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I had to stop watching because Karev and Meredith and never get together and that's what I was waiting for the whole entire time so after season 13 I stopped watching. I know it sounds stupid but ....... It should have happened. Good job writers. Oh wait I have to write more apparently. Should Hagar gotten rid of Callie's GF and Callie got got the kids cuz that was horrible. Figure it out people. Horrible writers. I'm so annoyed with this. Derek does and Karev and Meredith are best friends and don't become lover SUcks!!!!! They should be and don't care if it's ewww. They both wanted to family, especially Alex. He wanted her family and you just didn't let it happen.
