Challenges faced by 20-somethings in the city
apoling20106 September 2012
I heard about Girls last spring, but I never got around to watching it until now because I thought it would be about a bunch of well-to-do 20- somethings in NYC. Let's be honest. We already have Gossip Girl for that. When I finally got around to watching it, I was pleasantly surprised that it was a more down-to-earth portrayal of young women trying to make it in Brooklyn.

Unlike a previous poster who said that this show does not reflect reality, I am a 25-year-old woman trying to make it in NY, and I find that many scenes are similar to the real lives of my cohorts and I. Yes, some of my friends were being supported by their parents after college and have just recently been cut-off. Yes, it is hard to find a job in your field. So, you start taking any paying job without trying to sacrifice your dignity. As for relationships, there are a lot of weirdos out there.

Overall, I think this show is meant to be shocking and more real-to-life than many other shows about girls in NYC, and it achieves its purpose.

Pilot

Girls is a more grounded version of Sex and the City from Lena Dunham. In the opening scene we see Hannah Horvath (Lena Dunham) wolfing down her food as she has dinner with her parents.

Hannah is informed by her parents that she can no longer sponge of them. This comes as a shock to her. She is living in New York and hope to make it as writer.

Her job is an unpaid internship with no hope of a real wage. Hannah's no strings attached boyfriend attempts to soothe the shock with some lube and access to her back door.

A more realistic look of young people living in an apartment in one of the most expensive cities in the world. This is a dramedy rather than a comedy.

It makes a change from the cookie cutter sitcoms with young women in the city but this pilot did lack jokes.

That boyfriend of Hannah looked like the guy who killed his dad in Star Wars. It turned out it was him!
