It's an amazing game all around, from the story to the graphics to the lock on to the special stages. Every single detail has an amazing fine comb over it that any Sonic fan can enjoy. No wonder I have almost never seen any hate for this game, there's just no flaws! Each stage has wonderful music and are all easy (or at least fun) to play. I also think this game was very advanced for the time, with the 3D special stages and the echo effect in some of the music. Good job to the Sonic team for truly goining above and beyond for what is possibly the best game in the entire catalog, only a shame this game isn't considered one of the most important.
