The last episode of what seems to be the first season of “Joko Anwar's Nightmares and Daydreams” concludes the story in a way that everything that happened before makes sense, while retaining the very appealing sense of surprise that occurred in the previous segments. Joko Anwar, just like the first episode, “Old House” takes the seat of the director once more in “P.O. Box” closing the circle even in a meta level.

The sixth episode of “Joko Anwar's Nightmares and Daydreams” seems like a trip down the memory lane of his cinematic past. The story is written by Tia Hasibuan, who has been producer at “A Copy of My Mind”, “Impetigore” two “Satan's Slaves” while even acting in the second. The protagonist, Fachry Albar, was also in the two aforementioned entries but has also collaborated in Anwar's past futures, as in the case of “Dead Time” and “The Forbidden Door” for example, with the two being among his most frequent collaborators. Apart from these, “Hypnotized” takes another favorite concept of the horror genre, in order to present something rather different.

The third episode in “Joko Anwar's Nightmares and Daydreams” moves in yet another direction, in a style that reminds intently of Hollywood noir and even pulp on occasion, although the rich social commentary is here once more.

Rania, a celebrated author whose “Poems and Pains” novel was largely successful, is struggling to come up with an equal one moving forward, but cannot seem to get a break. Her editor and best and only friend Adrian is pushing her to publish a sequel, but she declines, supposedly because she wants to change direction from the exploitative pop aesthetics of the original, but that is not the only reason. Actually, when she was writing that book, she would have blackouts that would find her with bruises in her body and a number of pages being written without her remembering at all.

In less than a decade, Netflix has become a production powerhouse in South East Asia, and that fact was reinforced at a showcase the streamer held in the Indonesian capital Jakarta last week, where it showed off its latest batch of original local films and series.
Through aggressive and consistent investment in producing originals, Netflix has gained a market leading position in Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, and these three countries were the focus of the showcase on June 13. Among the slew of announcements, trailers, first-look stills and clips, Netflix unfurled news on not one, but two zombie projects, a period sex comedy, Thai sci-fi, more horror and action from Indonesia, and a serial killer thriller that could find a global audience.
Read on for details on the biggest Sea titles that Netflix showcased.

The seventh and last episode of Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams follows Valdya, one of the best diamond appraisers in all of Jakarta, as she assesses a piece of diamond that has been flagged by the customs department. One day, while making her way out of the office, she comes across a mysterious woman who compliments Valdya’s eyes (and Asmara Abigail’s eyes are truly stunning) and tells her that she met someone who had eyes just like hers. When Valdya asks about that individual’s identity, the woman says nothing. But she does promise that they’re going to meet again. Later on, it’s revealed that Valdya’s sister, Dara, went missing a long time ago, and the guy who used to date her back in the day, Rendy, is now dating Valdya, and they are about to get married. And as their wedding date gets closer,...

The sixth episode of Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams is centered around the lives of Ali, his wife Ningsih, and their children Ayu and Hendra. Ali is color blind, and hence, he has difficulty getting jobs. Ningsih is worried that they won’t be able to pay Ayu and Hendra’s school fees. Ali’s neighbor, Iwan, is aware of his issues, but his solution is to steal money from people by hypnotizing them. Iwan even teaches Ali how to get the job done, but Ali is wary of such illegal activities. So, he ignores Iwan’s suggestion. But when things get dire, he stalks and hypnotizes an elderly woman at an Atm booth and orders her to give some of her money to him. Things seemingly get better as Ali’s color blindness goes away; Ningsih is able to pay off Ayu and Hendra’s school fees and buy whatever she wants.

I have mixed feelings about the fifth episode of Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams. I mean I liked it to a certain extent and I was really waiting for some big revelation in the end, but it was quite disappointing to say the least. The story follows an ex-ticket collector Bandi, who used to work for a movie theater named Remaja. However, Bandi’s world came crashing down when the movie theater was shut down and he had to move to an abandoned building with his wife, Dewi, and son, Marhan. After losing his only source of income, Bandi started painting film posters, but it wasn’t enough. He had been under a lot of mental stress to find a job so that he could move to a rented place and provide a meal for his family. But Bandi didn’t have any other skill-set except for collecting tickets and painting posters.

The second episode of Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams explores human greed and ambition through an orphan named Syafin, who is rumored to have demonic powers. Syafin can make his adoptive parents wealthy in six days and kill them on the seventh day. It’s a clear “gambling with the devil” narrative, which we have often seen in One Thousand and One Nights stories, and to be honest, the second episode really doesn’t bring anything new to the table. The story is about a rag-picking couple, Ipah and Iyos, who adopt Syafin after Iyos finds out about his mysterious power. Recently, one of Iyos’ friends named Bagas adopted the same kid and got wealthy in six days but died on the next as per the agreements with the devil. Now, Iyos, who is swimming in debt and wants to improve his quality of life, convinced his wife to take the gamble,...

Netflix’s list of new releases for June 2024 look suspiciously like last month’s.
That’s because the biggest item on the schedule is Bridgerton season 3 once again. The final four episodes of Bridgerton‘s third season will premiere on June 13. Polin fans everywhere, rejoice! Other TV items of note this month include the third and final season of Sweet Tooth (June 6), Worst Roommate Ever season 2 (June 26), and That ’90s Show Part 2 (June 28).
Bridgerton aside, Netflix’s original movie options this month might be even more impressive than the TV slate. Richard Linklater’s Hitman, which stars Glen Powell as the titular assassin, premieres on June 7. That will be followed by documentary Black Barbie on June 19, the Jessica Alba-starring Trigger Warning on June 21, and romcom A Family Affair on June 28
Here’s everything else coming to Netflix this month. Note that Netflix marks its international offerings with that respective country’s two-letter country code.

I'm not blowing any minds by saying that "Avatar: The Last Airbender" took a lot of influence from anime. The characters are drawn in a way that they'd look right at home in an anime, but sometimes, the series' influences manifested more specifically. For instance, the season 1 spirit Hei Bai was inspired by the monstrous Angels from the classic mecha anime "Neon Genesis Evangelion." Jet, the anti-heroic leader of the Freedom Fighters, is likewise modeled on Spike Spiegel from "Cowboy Bebop" (and they share similar "unclear" death scenes). Since "Avatar" aired on Nickelodeon, Jet chews on a wheat thread instead of cigarettes like Spike.
These anime allusions aren't limited to supporting characters, either. In the season 3 episode "Nightmares and Daydreams," our hero — Avatar Aang — imagines himself facing the worst of the worst — Fire Lord Ozai. Neither hero nor villain are wearing their usual threads and across the dreams, they change appearance.

Prime Video might be pulling back from Southeast Asian originals, but Netflix remains is doubling down on originals in the region.
The streamer has unveiled several titles from Indonesia and Thailand, and a Chinese-language slate for 2024.
One of the bigger titles on the streamer’s Indonesian slate is sci-fi series Nightmares and Daydreams, which marks Netflix’s first collaboration with Joko Anwar.
Anwar’s horror films are often well-received at the box office, with Satan’s Slaves and its sequel both in the top 10 list for highest-grossing films in the country.
Director Timo Tjahjanto will return with action film The Shadow Strays, after making comedy action flick The Big 4 in 2022, which became the second most-watched non-English film on the streamer. The Shadow Strays will star Ario Bayu, Lukman Sardi, Marissa Anita, Nirina Zubir, Sita Nursanti, Fachri Albar and Asmara Abigail.

Global streaming giant Netflix has made a significant ongoing commitment to production of original content from Southeast Asia and in the Chinese language.
For 2024, Netflix has unveiled a slate of four Chinese-language series, all hailing from Taiwan. From Thailand, it detailed seven series and one film. From Indonesia, it has committed to five films and a series co-written and directed by the consistently successful Joko Anwar, marking his first partnership with the streamer.
Additionally, Netflix has confirmed the appointment of Maya Huang as its head of Chinese-language content.
The moves stand in sharp contrast to the mid-January happenings at rival global streamer Prime Video, which is cutting staff in the region and ending its brief experiment with Southeast Asian originals.
In Indonesia, Netflix says it is broadening its storytelling with a range of genres including comedy, action, fantasy, and sci-fi thrillers.
