In Greek mythology, Proteus was one of the early sea gods. He was considered the god of elusive sea change, referring to the constant changing nature of the sea and the liquid quality of water, and, as such, Proteus was capable of changing his shape. Proteus could also foresee the future, but disliked people always wanting him to tell their future and would change shape in order to avoid them.
The Titan hides in a starship graveyard in the Chin'toka system, which is in Cardassian space, near the Federation border. During the Dominion War, the system saw heavy fighting, including two major battles. In 2374, the Federation Alliance's first offensive into Cardassian space became known as the First Battle of Chin'toka. In Tears of the Prophets (1998), Starfleet Intelligence learned the system was only being protected by five squadrons of Jem'Hadar attack ships because the rest had been diverted to reinforce Dominion forces along the Romulan front. However, upon arriving in the system, the Federation/Klingon fleet discovered the system was being protected by the Dominion's new orbital weapons platforms. The platforms were heavily shielded and the Alliance fleet suffered heavy casualties until a weakness in the shields was discovered, allowing them to be destroyed and the system captured.
The Alliance remained in control of the system until late 2375 when the Dominion, thanks to help from their new Breen allies, retook it in The Changing Face of Evil (1999). When the Dominion/Breen fleet entered the system, the Alliance launched a major counter-attack, the Second Battle of Chin'toka. This failed dramatically, thanks to the Breen's new energy-dampening weapon, which could disable a starship's shields in a single shot, then cripple the ship by frying the main computer core and disabling main power; 311 of the 312 ships in the Alliance fleet were destroyed, including the U.S.S. Defiant.
