Coffee and treasure
When 'Phineas and Ferb' first started to air, Disney Channel was nowhere near as good as it used to be and still isn't. Instead of the likes of the animated Disney shows of the 80s and 90s, most of it was and still is animated shows with childish humour and Disney Channel sitcoms and unfortunately it tended to not be the good ones. This continued throughout the whole of 'Phineas and Ferb's' run to the extent that this became one of the few shows airing on the Channel worth watching.
Have always preferred "Tri-State Treasure: Boot of Secrets" of the two episodes, though "Sipping with the Enemy" is great fun too. Just doesn't quite as imaginative or energetic a plot and a little more conventional, despite having the marginally better Doofenschmirtz subplot. "Tri-State Treasure: Boot of Secrets" has however a very nostalgic plot, a bigger role for Richard and one of my favourite actors voicing the villain. It is also the episode with the biggest surprise of the two. Both are highly recommended, but there is just a preference for one over the other.
First and foremost, the animation is still wonderfully vibrant with very rich attention to detail, particularly in the second half of "Tri-State Treasure: Boot of Secrets". The music is dynamic with the action and the theme song is insanely catchy with very clever and quotable lyrics that anybody still in school fishing for how to spend their vacation will relate to. The voice acting is great, Dan Povenmire always sounds like he's having so much fun. Tim Curry, one of the best actors to play villains, is absolutely perfect casting as DuBois.
Moreover, the writing is very funny and intelligent. Once again, the right balance of being easy to understand for children while not being too juvenile for adults is successful. Both stories are entertaining and energy filled without being too manic. Loved the adventurous vibe of "Tri-State Treasure: Boot of Secrets" that had me nostalgic for the adventure genre. There is a big reveal too that was a big surprise on first watch and still comes over as clever. Both Doofenschmirtz subplots are fun, the marginal edge going to "Sipping with the Enemy" (which has an awesome magic show).
Loved all the characters, who all shone in their own way, and did relate to the chemistry between Vanessa and Monty which is not soapy or cheesy.
Of the two episodes, the weakest element is the fairly predictable and not particularly necessary Candace subplot in "Tri-State Treasure: Boot of Secrets".
All in all however, great. 9/10.
