Isaac Sirko: The Terminator!
chandler_joey29 October 2012
I love the character development in this episode, esp. Isaac's. Man, he's bada**, completely psychotic and I think he will not be put down so easily. After all, he is the terminator. There is definitely more Isaac coming, and he may just turn out to be the best villain in the series. Well, him and Brian.

The plot is thickening, with Isaac's blood thirst, Hannah and her dark secret, and surprisingly Quinn coming into picture. I am loving how this season is developing, sometimes fast and sometimes slow. But so well connected.

I love Debra freaking out scene and how she regroups herself. I think it was her personal best cursing in the whole series. Ha.

Dexter still hiding facts from Debra, after putting her a** on line, is surely going to end the wrong way. But Dexter, being always protectful of her sister, does want her to 'swim deep'. And Laguerta digging deep into the Doakes case will definitely take an interesting turn. I can just feel it.

This season is becoming more thrilling and suspenseful with each episode. Hats off to the writers. What a comeback!

9/10.

Protecting Dexter
claudio_carvalho26 July 2014
Masuka finds that LaGuerta has sent a blood slide to an independent laboratory for analysis and asks Debra whether he is going to be fired. Debra calms him down and goes to LaGuerta's office that discloses that she believes that the Bay Harbor butcher is still alive. Debra offers to help her to cover Dexter, but when she tells to her brother, he unsuccessfully asks Debra to step back. While cleaning his boat for Harrison's return, Dexter finds vestiges of blood and soon he learns that it belongs to Louis. Then he discovers that the dangerous Isaak killed Louis and now is seeking revenge against him and the detectives of the Miami Metro for Viktor's death. Dexter warns Debra and protects her and he plots a plan to get rid of Isaak that does not work as planned. Dexter also discovers the truth about the involvement of Hannah McKay in the crime spree. Quinn surprisingly accepts bribery from the Koshka Brotherhood. Debra disappoints Angel to protect her brother and vanishes with a photo that would compromise Dexter in LaGuerta's investigation.

"Swim Deep" shows Debra still confused but protecting Dexter. Dexter stumbles with a powerful opponent, the Ukraine Isaak, but he finds means to satisfy Debra and put the guy aside. Hannah McKay is not innocent as she pretends to be, and now Dexter knows. Quinn disappoints the fans of this series, apparently accepting the bride in his car. My vote is eight.

Warning: Spoilers
Dexter loved Rita and really cared about Lumen. The emotions he showed to the latter were really deep and sincere. However, none of those two were ever so close to Dexter as Deb is right now. And Dexter is being himself, maybe like he never was. I mean, he lies to Deb about Hannah by the end of the episode, but that IS him at his most true self. He cares about Deb, he loves her, and he wants to protect her more than anything. And that is why he has to lie, and doesn't want her to share his secrets. I think this is the most true Dexter has ever been to anyone (despite Lumen also getting very close to him), and that is why the show is so interesting right now.

We see a really cold and powerful Isaak Sirko, and he's driven now. He's not done with Dexter. Moreover, all he does has a motive, as we were shown in the scene with the apartment last episode, and that just adds to the mix. That is why he can't stop, no matter what. But neither can Dexter - so, one way or another, they are in collision course.

The mentions and references to other seasons are still too subtle to me, but Doakes' shadow reappearing over Dexter, Debra divided and close to her breaking point, Quinn turning to his dark side again, and all of that wrapped up with fine writing (finally back on track again, since season 4 or 5) and excellent acting, gives us one of the best shows in TV again.

GREAT episode
trophonix17 August 2017
Oh man, what a good episode. Very fun and interesting interactions between Isaak and Dexter, and we finally get a look at the tough choices a person in power has to make as Deb, a once hardass cop who fought for her beliefs to the last breath, makes the tough decisions of a Lieutenant in her position. "Nothing is as simple as it seems"!

Warning: Spoilers
Dexter is cleaning his boat getting ready for his son coming back while he talks to Harry about how these murders are effecting Debra. As Dexter cleans his boat he finds a lot of blood to someone who was killed on his boat that he was not responsible for. Vince tells Debra that LaGuerta is testing blood in another lab which belongs to Travis Marshall. Debra talks to LaGuerta and she is told that another blood slide was found leading LaGuerta to believe the bay harbor butcher is still out there. Debra goes into the elevator and cruses her way down to go talk to Dexter. She tells Dexter that LaGuerta is looking into cases involving three murders he committed. Only one of the three has a family in Miami so Dexter tells her how he killed one of them and she does not react well to it. Dexter is starting to notice someone is following him lately even seeing that Isaak was in his apartment waiting for him. When Isaack arrives where the call tells him to go he calls him to find why he was at his apartment. Isaak then threatens to hurt Debra or anyone who helped him kill Victor but Dexter tells him it was just him. Dexter then has to tell Debra about more murders and that she may be in trouble. Debra does not react well especially since she is covering up many murders so Dexter plans to keep everyone safe by fighting against Isaac. Dexter then starts his stack of Isaac following anyway he can. Just as Dexter starts his search he is called by Angel to talk to Hannah McKay about the bodies that the police needed to find. Hannah tells of how Wayne killed so many people and buried them near motels. Angel leaves Dexter and Hannah talking while he try's to look more into her. Dexter and Debra settle into their motel and he will not tell her the plan. She then talks about how she did not expect to be in this room hiding from a dangerous man. Hannah and Dexter at the dig talk about Murder like it's just normal talk. LaGuerta helps Dexter as she interviews the son of Barns. While looking through the pictures Debra sees Dexter is in one of them getting LaGuerta to bring them back to the station. While looking at the bodies Dexter sees that the women was killed by someone smaller then Wayne maybe Hannah. Dexter then tells Hannah she lied but she has immunity covering her involvement. When Dexter is leaving the crime scene he sees Isaac is right behind him following him. Dexter is then followed as he is chased with a gun. Angel then comes into Debra's office to say he feels Alex's suicide was forced. The police department are called to the bar Dexter was just at, it shows that Isaac killed everyone in the bar instead of him being killed. Quinn is called of to meet with his club girlfriend to give her a lift. When the blood is tested the find a match that is Isaac. Angel comes back into Debra's office to talk about Alex not being responsible for Mike's murder. Debra turns him down Angel to cover up for Dexter telling him he does not have the evidence he needs. Dexter goes to talk to Isaac with a glass window between the two. Isaac gives a speech about his past and they two are now in a rivalry. Debra gives Dexter the photo of him at the wedding with her saying she will not cover up for him anymore. Dexter does not tell Debra that he thinks Hannah may have been involved in the murders by Wayne.Dexter sets fire to the photo leaving him by himself with no more help from her.

Warning: Spoilers
1. Deb knows that Laguerta knows about the blood slide 2. Isaac is arrested and has a stand-off with Dex 3. Dexter burns a photo.

Debra ordering Angel to back down was a crucial moment. It meant that Deb chose Dex over true justice. Dex and Debs relationship is so complex. They are siblings, coworkers, partners in crime... and so far it's being unwrapped expertly. Dexter still hides the truth from Deb and she is probably aware as well. Season 7 has not let me down at all.

The whole scene with Isaac was fantastic. What a great addition to the show. Dex is facing an entire mafia - which is by far the most difficult task he's ever had to face. A worthy opponent that engages the viewer simply because Dexter can't kill the mob one by one by himself.

Solid episode.

S7.E5 - Sirko [9/10]
panagiotis199325 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S7. E5) My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 7 Episode 5 ''Swim Deep'': Episode 4 was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. I knew that at some point laguerta would try to prove that Doakes was innocent. Sirko just wont let go, he wants Dexter dead. Hannah looks guilty of something to me. Is Angel the only one who knows that the barman's death was a set up? I really wanna see Sirko on Dexter's table so much. Dex's plan to get Sirko killed was very smart but Sirko is really good with a gun. So is Sirko going to jail? Probably not for long. Overall a really good episode, my rating is 9/10.

Jailhouse communications error
christopherluke-1826412 November 2021
Love Dexter and am watching it again to prepare for the new show but it blew me away that the writers thought that having two career murdering criminals discuss their crimes on jail phones was a good idea? Could've wrote it so they used some kinda code words or something at least. Otherwise great acting as always.

Sloppy Writing
adirondack-11 November 2012
When Isaac is captured by Miami Metro, Dexter visits him in jail. That makes a record, since you have to show ID and sign in to visit a prisoner, and all uses of the visitor-intercom system used in jails are monitored and recorded. Bad for Dexter since he's not supposed to know Isaac and they discuss killings over the visitor phone. The writers of this show apparently have no idea how actual law enforcement works. In real life, someone like Hannah would never cooperate by showing police where victims are buried, but it's done here to advance the plot. Too bad the writers could not come up with a more realistic way to do it. There's speculation Hannah is interested in Dexter to make him a victim, but since everyone in Miami Metro knows what she did and sees her attraction to Dexter, they'd be pretty certain anything bad that happens to him will be her doing.
