Meanwhile, Cristina lets her suspicions get the best of her.—ABC Publicity
- We notice a new nurse at Seattle Grace Mercy West and Cristina is watching her closely. Meredith, meanwhile, is blabbing about how Callie blew her mind with their early-morning studying session. Cristina is distracted, but won't say why.
Lexie is on peds, taking a break from Shepherd's "death march." She's stunned to walk into a room where the 14-ounce baby of Alex's intern, Morgan, is being held. The intern's boyfriend has come in from Cleveland, and he's purely focused on the real chance of the baby's survival. He puts the baby's weight into an app on his phone and finds the chance of survival is 13 percent. Alex is annoyed, saying the hospital doesn't use such a formula because it freaks parents out. Arizona shares the news that the baby needs neck surgery.
Derek drops Zola off at the day care and sees Bailey, who seems surprised to see Derek dropping Zola off. A blonde woman walks in and Derek seems to take an odd interest.
Teddy gives a presentation to the board about some research she wants to do, but is distracted and fumbles through her slides. Chairman Larry Jennings calls it short and says they've seen enough. Teddy pleads with the board to consider the research, saying it could save "tens of thousands of lives."
An explosion at a coffee house brings in an emergency patient who's been burned. Another man has shrapnel all over his body. He can barely speak, but wants to know if Angie is OK. She's not his wife, but his barista.
Cristina continues to follow around the nurse, who's young and attractive and seems a little chummy with Owen.
Webber wakes up at home, where the smoke alarm is going off. He can't find Adele and finds a fire in a pan on the stove. He puts it out, nearly burning himself, and finds Adele uninjured.
Teddy tells Arizona and Callie about how her presentation was a fiasco, but she doesn't care because her husband's dead. Callie suggests she talk to Owen, and Teddy says, "I don't talk to Owen Hunt."
Cristina catches up with Owen while they're treating the shrapnel guy and mentions that he didn't come home. He says he was working on something. Callie mentions to Owen that Teddy's presentation went badly and it would be nice if he backed her up. He doesn't respond. The shrapnel guy, Devon, says his parents are old and he doesn't want to worry them -- he wants them to let Angie know he's OK. A nurse comes in and tells Meredith that Webber is in the E.R.
Angie, the barista, is panicking and tells Avery and Sloan about how much pressure there is to keep up with the morning rush. Avery yells at her to stay still because the work he's doing is delicate. Sloan pulls Avery aside and after Avery says he's tense because he's prepping for the boards, Sloan asks Avery if he's "getting any." Avery says he's focused, "there's no time."
Sloan replies, "There's always time."
Meredith treats Webber's burned arm and tells him about a home where Adele could get good treatment. He doesn't seem interested but appears to be open to the idea.
Lexie is pulling for the tiny baby and Arizona lets her help on the surgery.
Cristina and Meredith put Devon into an MRI machine while he talks about how the sexual tension between him and Angie has been increasing lately. He wants to send her a cappuccino to let her know he's OK, and mentions that she's lately started imprinting little leaves in his foam.
Back in the baby's surgery, something goes wrong and Lexie has to resuscitate the baby with just two fingers and light pressure.
Webber and Adele tour Rose Ridge, the care home Meredith suggested which seems particularly nice. Adele looks nervous. When the administrator leaves, Webber asks Adele what she thinks, and she says it's nice but too small to raise a family in, and she wonders where the nursery would go. Webber tells her she's right, it's too small. "I said I'd get you a house," he says, and they leave.
Teddy comes in and tells Callie the news that she got $4 million for research to grow hearts from stem cells.
Lexie, Alex and Arizona tell Morgan and her boyfriend about the baby's condition and the options they have for treatment. The boyfriend says they should stop trying things because the 13 percent figure is "reality," and he tells Morgan to think like a doctor and figure out whether she'd operate on a baby that had a 13 percent chance of survival.
Sloan tries to set up Angie (the barista) and Avery (who's sitting right next to her) when Cristina walks in with the cappuccino sent by Devon. Cristina explains who it's from and Angie says she has no idea who he is. When Cristina tells her about the leaves she imprints in Devon's foam, Angie says she has to do that for everybody -- it's a new company policy. Cristina is flummoxed. Sloan says he'll take the cappuccino.
Cristina is still watching the nurse from afar at lunch. Lexie is complaining to Alex about how they have to push the parents about treatment options for the baby. Avery is wearing headphones to block it all out while he studies. Cristina points out the nurse to Alex and asks him if he'd "hit that." Alex says she only goes for attendings, so "maybe next year."
Sloan and Derek are with their kids in the day care when a woman looks at Derek through the window. Derek tells Sloan he thinks the woman's racist, and Sloan mocks him for being concerned that he's "bridging the cultural divide." Sloan says that's why he's learning Spanish. Derek asks about Sloan's "better half," and Sloan starts talking about Avery. Derek clarifies he was talking about Julia, and Sloan says she's good.
Alex comes to check on Morgan's baby and she asks why he calls the baby "Ali." He says they like to give premie babies "fighters' names" when they don't have names yet. Morgan says Chris, her boyfriend, is outside and she thinks he "just can't be here." She asks Alex if he thinks they're doing the right thing. Alex admits the odds aren't realistic, but he's seen parents who don't see things the way doctors do. Alex says he doesn't want to tell her what to do, but "Ali's got plenty of doctors in his corner; you make sure he's got a parent." Morgan says they're thinking of naming him Thomas, after her dad. She asks if that's "tough enough," and Alex says, "Tommy? Tommy's good."
Webber tells Meredith he's going home because Adele is not having a good day. Meredith again tells him about Rose Ridge, and he tells her they went to visit and it's "not the answer." Webber tells Meredith that he "made vows" to Adele, and he's broken them time and again, and the least he can do is be true to them now.
Cristina is trying to log into the computer system as April so she can see the nurses' schedule. April gives in and looks it up herself. April finds that Emily, the nurse Cristina's been watching, recently from days to nights in the surgical ICU handling traumas, "which is weird, but Dr. Hunt signed off on it, so should be fine." Cristina leaves.
In surgery, Derek talks to Bailey about a play date with Tuck and Zola. Bailey thinks that because Tuck is 5 and Zola is about 1, she might not survive. Derek stammers as he tries to explain that he doesn't want Zola to "feel out of place" and wants her to spend time with kids who "have the same ... roots." Bailey furrows her brow and asks, "Roots?" She says nothing else.
Morgan tries to tell her boyfriend Chris that they should keep trying to treat the baby, but he wants her to admit that getting pregnant was an accident, "that this baby should not be alive right now." He says that doing everything they can to keep him alive is just so they can feel good about themselves after he dies. She tells him to go.
Teddy, Callie, Cristina and Meredith are treating Devon and Cristina reveals that the barista doesn't know who Devon is. Hunt walks in and everything gets awkward. Callie congratulates Teddy on her research funding and Hunt offers Teddy to advice on another doctor she could share notes with. Teddy tells him if she wants his advice, she'll ask. Hunt tries to help Teddy on the surgery and she tells him to "back the hell off."
Sloan walks up to April and tells her she's "an attractive woman." She's flustered and says they're just "study buddies." He suggests they "help each other out" and that she could help Avery alleviate some stress and "extend" their relationship. She tells him it's "sexual harassment" and he says he thinks of it as "sexual encouragement."
Callie talks to Hunt about Teddy and tells him he should tell Teddy that he helped get her the funding. He says that if Teddy needs a punching bag, it can be him. Callie tells him be can go ahead and be a martyr but he also has to be the chief, and what happened in the O.R. should never happen again.
Devon asks Cristina whether Angie has come by to see him, and she tells him Angie has no idea who he is. He insists that Angie must be confused because they have "this thing, this flirtation." Cristina says she understands seeing something and convincing one's self that it's something it isn't, and soon you're believing it's real. She says, "You have to stop."
Alex, Lexie and Arizona are preparing the tiny baby for a treatment that should improve his cardiovascular function. Alex suggests to Morgan that she go rest because it can be a hard procedure for parents to watch. She says she can handle it because she's a doctor, too. Lexie turns on a machine and it makes the baby shake, and Morgan panics a bit.
Cristina pages Owen to an on-call room and kisses him. He pushes her away and says he doesn't have time.
Webber gets home to find Adele yelling at a caretaker and throwing things. She also yells at Richard, telling him to leave her alone and saying that her parents will be home soon. He tries to convince her that he's her husband.
Alex sees Chris outside, and Chris tries to connect with Alex, saying he'd stay but he has people covering double shifts and he's in the middle of a clinical trial. He asks Alex, "You know how it is, right?" Alex nods ever so slightly and walks back inside.
Derek is carrying Zola out of day care when he catches a nurse glancing at him with a bit of distressed look on her face. He asks her if she has "a problem." Bailey sees this and says, "Oh, no" to herself. Derek tells her, "It's 2012, if you want to be shocked the sight of a white man with a black baby, you're about three decades too late!"
Bailey pulls Derek aside and apologizes to the woman on his behalf. She tells him the woman was not staring at him because he's white and Zola is black. "She was staring at you two because daddy has nice hair, maybe perfect hair, but for whatever reason his daughter's hair is 31 flavors of wrong. It's hard on the eyes!
"Look, you are white. But your daughter is black," Bailey continues. "Do your baby's hair!"
Meredith catches Cristina eyeing the nurse again and pulls her into a room and asks what her plan is. "Whatever it is, I need to know. Are you plotting a murder? A nuclear attack?" Meredith promises that whatever it is, she's sure Cristina as a reason and she'll get on board.
Cristina says she thinks Owen is cheating on her. Meredith asks if she's seen anything and Cristina admits she hasn't, she just knows. Meredith starts to say something, but Cristina starts to call herself crazy.
Meredith says, "OK," and says she really thinks Owen is not cheating. Cristina angrily snaps back, "I know that."
In the elevator, Sloan tells Avery that Julia has a friend he could meet. Avery says he had a girlfriend and now he just doesn't want to. Sloan realizes that Avery still loves Lexie. Avery leaves.
Lexie tells Alex she wants to get back to neuro and Derek's "lost causes" because the patients can tell you when they've had enough. She doesn't know how any of the peds surgeons can bear it. Alex takes her to a bulletin board full of pictures of babies who were born at or just over a pound and tells her about what they're doing now. "Some of them survive," he says. Arizona sees this and smiles.
Webber sits at his dining room table and cries. Adele walks in and asks what happened. She asks if he hurt his hand, then if she hurt his hand. He brushes this off and says he'll make dinner. Adele says, "I have Alzheimer's, don't I?" He tells her she does. She says Rose Ridge seemed like a nice place. She thinks it's best if she went to live there. Webber tries to tell her she's home with him, but she says she'd rather be there. He agrees.
We next see Bailey showing Derek how to do Zola's hair.
Alex and Morgan both sit at her baby's side.
At home that night, Cristina goes through Owen's email, opens credit card statements, rifles through his dirty clothes. She hears him coming and races into bed, pulling the covers over herself. He walks in and calls her name quietly, and she pretends to sleep. Owen goes straight into the shower.
