The One You Feed

Warning: Spoilers
I was really surprised that the show took this route.

Sure, we had a pseudo corrupt cop in the mix, but for the most part it was a group of bad teens in a gang who were the villains from start to finish. This happens all the time in New York City, but so rare to see a show in 2022 actually go through and acknowledge it.

They are planting the seeds for Rollins' exit. I hope we get a big grand gesture as she leaves, but I worry we'll get nothing more than a brief chat.

This was a fairly enjoyable episode of SVU though. So far this new season is off to a quality start. Hope they can keep it coming.

Season 24 Feels Way Different, Better

Love it when an SVU episode captures the nuances of 1.0 vibe, but is obviously all new.

This second episode of the season was a really promising debut for the show's new producer and head writer David Graziano, who helmed this hour as if he'd been doing it forever, (but who did not write last week's crossover premier).

The One You Feed features an uptown gang whose subway attack on a vacationing family spurs McGrath to pair Benson with Bronx gang unit captain Mike Duarte (terrific Maurice Compte).

Mariska Hargitay and Compte are fun together and the with a few threads from the case still dangling at hour's end, it seems possible his character could return.

But this episode also has Rollins (Kelli Giddish) and Velasco (Octavio Pisano) soul-searching; Betty Buckley pouring actual tea; Fin reminding everyone he's still with Phoebe; new detective Grace Muncy (Molly Burnett) making her debut, and most importantly Hargitay laying down the law, running to the scene in Kevlar, and looking gorgeous in a series of designer jackets under the much-improved lighting in her office.

It's a big busy episode that never lagged. And how refreshing to see Benson written as 'happy,' particularly after the mostly aimless incoherence of last season. 10 stars baby!

Way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!
bronx741 October 2022
I have been a faithful viewer of all the Law & Order series, and although many of the episodes are clunkers, there's usually some redeeming factor that makes it watchable. I kept waiting for that moment with this episode, and it never came. The episode managed to further the narrative that Hispanic immigrants are dangerous animals, White people are never safe in the city because they'll be targeted by those "animals", and the Bronx is someplace that's akin to another country (I grew up there - it isn't). Benson is morphing into someone who is not at all likeable. We get it - she's tough - but her dialogue is increasingly full of snarky one-liners and little else. Sad to say, if the writers have run out of fresh plot lines, Dick Wolf should just throw in the towel and recognize that it's time to close the series out.
