On February 12, 1993, a two year old boy was kidnapped from a Merseyside shopping centre and murdered in gruesome fashion. The most horrific aspect of this now notorious crime was that the killers were two ten year old boys.
The case of Thompson and Venables has generated much print and a great deal of celluloid, or whatever they now make films on, all the more so because of the future antics of Venables, who at the time of writing is back behind bars - hopefully for good - after downloading extreme child pornography, and far more serious although he was not charged with it, trying to obtain access to underage girls on-line to have sex with, and quite likely to murder.
This documentary predates the 2010 prison recall of this wretch, and as the title indicates focuses on the story of Denise Bulger (later Denise Fergus) who was pregnant with another son at the time of the murder. She had previously given birth to a stillborn daughter, so few women in this modern world understand such tragedy quite like her. She and Ralph Bulger split shortly after the murder, but she soon remarried and gave birth to two more sons.
At the centre of this film though is James, what happened to him, how and why. The what and why are thoroughly documented. Perhaps the closest we will ever get to the why is the word evil.
