This is Noel, as he's always promised, but never before delivered.
theawesomespamsponge14 January 2013
Luxury Comedy is definitely the work of Noel Fielding. It's overflowing with much of the same surrealism we've seen in The Mighty Boosh, as well as his stand-up. We've heard him talk about himself in absurd terms. We've seen his wistful creations. Every time we've seen his works, we've seen flashes of a bubbling caldera of surreal, outlandish creativity, but always somewhat suppressed, somewhat mired in the interests of making his humour palatable. Luxury Comedy is what happens when the caldera explodes. This is Noel unchained. The show is a sea of glam, paint, and insane creations. This is not just Noel talking about how is unique mind works, this is him showing you, and it's... it's weird.

It's very weird. It's definitely the weirdest show I've ever watched. It subverts, deliberately, just about every convention it can get its finger paint-stained hands on. These conventions, of course, are comforting and are usually there for a reason, and when all of them are stripped so unceremoniously from the show, it can feel genuinely uncomfortable. The humour billed in the show's title is inexpressibly bizarre, typically staying well clear of punchlines, or anything else to make you laugh out loud. Instead, there's generally a haze of amusement that pervades the show. Some sketches in the show, such as the incomparable Jelly Fox sketch, hold our attention for their sheer hypnotic brilliance, even if they're not particularly humorous.

Naturally, it doesn't always work, on the level of art or entertainment, but it never feels forced. It is hypnotic, addictive, and surprisingly more-ish once you give it a generous chance. If you have an above-average tolerance for surrealism, I recommend you give it a go.

Give the show a chance - it might just grown on you
moose-138-49987024 April 2012
I have to admit, when I watched the first episode of Luxury Comedy (Pele), I was stunned at how bad the show seemed. It was painful to watch. I can sure understand how some of the more negative impressions here have come to be. I almost logged in and left similarly negative feedback. It took me few episodes to become a fan of The Might Boosh, but, after the 1st episode, I could not imagine ever becoming a fan of Luxury Comedy, or even watching it again for that matter.

However, I persevered. A week later, I watched the 2nd episode (The Jelly Fox). Hmm, that was less painful. The lion in the cage was bizarre but the end of the sketch was almost funny - almost a chuckle there. OK, hmm, lets try another episode. A week later, and I watched the 3rd episode (King Tutta), found it better again. Now, all of a sudden, the show didn't seem anywhere near as bad as it first seemed, and it certainly was starting to "grow on me".

I have just finished watching the first three episodes again, and I can say that I'm starting to like Luxury Comedy - quite a lot in fact. Some parts are quite funny. It's actually becoming a pleasure to watch. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

What I recommend to others is to hold off making up your mind about this, or commenting here, until you have given the show a good chance. Keep an open mind. Leave a week between episodes to give yourself time to digest what you have seen - because you will certainly be seeing some crazy and bizarre stuff - and see how you go. At this early stage (only 3 episodes x 2 viewings), I'll assume that the show's appeal will keep on increasing. As such, I'm giving Luxury Comedy a review score of 9 / 10.

Disappointingly unfunny.
gvf17 March 2012
Having long been known as a somewhat peculiar character, even among all the other peculiar characters on British telly, Fielding and his entourage of writers and producers spared no cost in treating us to yet another permutation of his off-the-wall and sometimes outright bizarre sense of humour.

That is, if you can call it humour. "Luxury Comedy" never delivers what it promises. It may be luxurious in terms of visuals, and perhaps even the concomitant production values (although looks may be deceiving, in this age of fool-the-eye cgi effects). But the show drops the ball where it really matters, and fails dismally in terms of actual funny-ness. It's almost as if all the creative potential that was expended on bringing this programme to life went into the (admittedly lavish) artwork, and nobody thought to hire writers to come up with things that the odd person who isn't a die-hard Noel Fielding fan might honour with even so much as a chuckle.

If you've seen Noel Fielding as a guest on any comedy panel show, you know that he is actually a pretty funny guy, capable of ingeniously hilarious one-liners and ludicrously bizarre takes on just about any subject. It's a shame that almost none of this comedic potential has surfaced on "Luxury Comedy", and it makes the experience of watching it even more disappointing. Apparently Channel 4 have already commissioned a second season - here's hoping that it will finally live up to its own name.

Bizarre......
gspilot11 January 2013
This is either total rubbish or a work of genius. This reviewer reckons it's the latter. On first viewing I thought "What? Can I have some of what he's been smoking please?" but as the series progressed I started to warm to it.I watched it again on Catch Up (Virgin cable...) and it started to click into place. It actually frightens me that I'm starting to "get it",as a shrink would probably have Noel sectioned after a rummage inside THAT brain. Some of the sketches are hit'n'miss, but most of Python was utter mince and it's supposedly a classic of comedy. The characters are seriously strange as you'd expect (it IS Noel after all) but some, such as Dondylion, are deeper than you'd think. There's no middle ground, you'll either love it or loath it,but at least give it a chance. Now,when's the DVD coming out?

Kooky check ,wierd check ,funny errr..
dregj29 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
i wont waste time with this failed experiment of a TV show the fact is it simple doesn't work on any level .Mostly it fails as a comedy in that its not funny and the rest of it is just an embarrassing mess of supposedly Ker-razzy ideas that are just pointless ,odd and deeply uncomfortable to watch. Like someone stripped the mighty boosh and gave your all the bits you don't like packaged in a glam rock handbag. Noel comes off as annoying and kooky for the sake of it,and with out his better half to balance this mess out ,what we have here is a total loss of a TV show .A completely unsalvagable anti comedy "rolled in glitter" as jimmy carr would say.

Psychedelia without the spinal damage
empty-bin2 September 2013
Essentially a children's show for creative adults, Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy is 15% guffaw, 70% wtf and 153% fascinating and unfolds like an engrossing dream.

If Snuff Box and Monty Python's Flying Circus had a baby and paid Richard Ayoade to drop it off daily at Noel Fielding's house where it were regularly pacified with a goat's milk/LSD concoction, in it's 2nd year it would look like Luxury Comedy.

That said, no - it is not hilarious. But the imagery, characterization, story telling and situational comedy are thoroughly entertaining. I'm never bored with this.

Examples of bits that made me laugh outright: Fantasy Man appears in a park after sewing up a crack in the internet that appeared between Youtube and Youporn, Fielding's wrist watch ring tone, Secret Peter - "They're puttin' a tube line in/ does he know I've got brain damage?" Fantasy Man catches a beatdown in an alley after trapping the Dream Tiger.

The Audience (character) is an incredible character - looks as though it were pulled out of Yellow Submarine, processes mashed potatoes and laughs at pretty much everything while being moderated by Doo Rag. My metaphor detector goes crazy when this skit comes on.

Fantasy Man's segments and the French mime segment were surreal and beautiful for it.

This show is/was outstanding.

If you've voted this higher than 2 stars....What are you doing with your life?

Noel Fielding; "Glam" superstar. Heartthrob to many a pre-pubescent girl. Complete idiot. This show is nothing more than an idiots dreams after overdosing on LSD and Magic Mushrooms. His obsession with mashed potato is disturbing, along with his obsession of being "Bummed", as he puts it. How anyone can find this funny is beyond me, and if you do find it to be "Comedy", you really need to discover the true meaning of the word. I would not even force my greatest enemy to watch this steaming pile of horse manure. I have a plea to everyone with a decent sense of humour; Do not allow yourself to waste your own time by watching this shoddy "Program"

The Amazingly Weird and Wonderful
funky_giraffe10 April 2013
To be honest, i'm not sure you can compare this show to The Boosh...to me they are so different in every way. The Mighty boosh has more of a storyline, with crazy characters injected where they need to be injected, Whereas Luxury Comedy is a show about crazy characters with no specific storyline. Like the man himself has described it, it is like a children's show for adults. Of course this style of show isn't for everyone, and if i tried to show this to any of my friends, they would probably throw me into a mental asylum. I believe this programme is for the select few who can deal with the extreme ridiculousness of Noel's imagination. To some it's a strange place where the freaks of the world hang out, but to others (the awesome ones) IT'S A STRANGE PLACE WHERE THE FREAKS OF THE WORLD HAND OUT!!! :') "Got to go now, it's the end of the show"

Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy
darshangood7 April 2012
this show is so bad

anyone who praises it must have something wrong with them

i saw the 1st episode to give it a chance did not laugh at one part at all there is nothing to it , apart form it being terrible , noel fielding is nothing with out Julian , they had a good formula with boosh , with this they are trying to push the boundaries but its just dose not work because of the poor acting , poor writing, poor story ....the list goes on

noel fielding is not actually a funny person he was only OK on buzz- cocks when he was on it at the start and when he was filling in for bill bailey , but he was the replacement for bill bailey when he left , he was terrible because his humor is very UN-creative as he tries to combine's 2 different things together but after a while it get boring and thats what this show is

this is like a cheap boosh and the boosh was averagely good

i also saw this with my friends as well when it was on E4 just in case i was missing something and we all were thinking the same

how did this even make its way to TV , it is so and that adults think that is too childish

and even though it looks like a kids show , not one kid would find this appealing , there is just no substance to this

i was disgusted to even see this aired

please do not watch this , even if you like boosh

Wonderful show
jeremyjenewein29 August 2012
The first two episodes of this show are almost like an adjustment period from real life to the world of Noel. The third episode is probably one of my favorite episodes of any TV show ever. Things from that point on are pretty consistently great. Some of the sketches are "misses" not "hits" but I feel like as the series goes on and you get familiar with the characters, even ones that you didn't like originally will grow on you.

I hated the original fish finger for later sketch but when it came back with the second installment of that I lost it laughing, so funny! I'm very glad this show is coming back for a second season because I think it's going to build on the foundation from season 1.

By the way, the Tiger with Chlamydiae sketch is one of the funniest and wackiest premises I think I've ever seen. I love that episode.

tedium has found a new level
petemoore-374475 April 2018
Saying random words with an inane grin does not a comedy make.im not sure what they were trying to achieve but if it was boredom tinged with regret and depression then bingo they succeded. most real comedians must feel like they have been slapped in the face when noel is called a comedian.he comes across as a someone trying to be uber cool but failing because cool is not an act but inherent.trying to be funny but not saying anything remotely comedic.dont waste your time

Ooh, yeah.

A big surprise, Luxury Comedy hits you in the face like a fantasy pancake thrown by a big blue blob and sticks there, dripping.

What a riot of invention, surrealism and humor. Occasionally erratic and incomprehensible, but that's all part of the fun. Anyway, you can watch it again and again if you don't get it first time.

Nothing could be more innovative and fresh than this cornucopia of strangeness. Kaleidoscopic and multicoloured, not for those of a conventional disposition. Only lovers of the truly weird need apply for this feast of freshness.

Beyond Punchline
alfa33-mmd27 April 2012
This is not The Mighty Boosh. Analogously quoting Andy Warhol in episode 2: "I'm not The Mighty Boosh, I'm Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy". Don't expect punchline humour here. Prepare for an experience instead. This one is not about punchlines and neither about funny skits, instead it's about psychic as well as physical hardship (i.e. pain) as well as pain in general. plus it's surrealist comedy dealing with everyday (media) stereotypes and other phenomena (where the hell does Daddy Push come from?). The cultural references in their abundance (blatant clues all over the place) aren't always easy to catch for someone continental, but they're just the icing on a psychedelic fruit cake. Everything is so garish, so absurd and at the same time so painful and intimate (yes, intimate!). Imagine Ren and Stimpy combined with Flying Circuses's awkwardest moments. I can do without further comparison here. Watch and behold, suffer and rejoice, and don't be ashamed of any of your reactions. Especially when watching the Dondylion sketches you may as well cry a little bit. It's appropriate. Appreciate what you got. It's the work of one crafty Noel Fielding, the Offshore European Surrealist. Why just 8/10? Well, Dolly Wells might be the gorgeousest version of herself ever (I mean it, ever. Cigar!) in this cock-and-bull (watch the pinnacle of kinkiness in the "alien sketch" in episode 4) and Mike Fielding is as always the relieable bone dry sidekick, but some of the sketches are quite naff, like fillers that don't really tie the show together.

tl;dr It's new, it's unique, but it tends to wear off.

PS: E1 has one of the worst Michael Caine impersonations ever.

Surreal like an acid trip, but utterly addictive
jmcgil2212 October 2014
I've heard that if you take LSD seven times or more, you can be declared legally insane. I imagine that the same rule applies for the number of episodes you've watched of Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy. The series does indeed seem like a very colorful and crazy acid trip. The use of strange costumes and animated backgrounds add to the surreal ambiance. As weird and bizarre as it is though, television actually needs more original and imaginative shows like this one. This series breaks the mold of formulaic comedies and predictable characters that have overtaken modern television. Noel Fielding brings you back to your childhood when your imagination roamed free. Although this certainly is not a show for children, it does have that unselfconscious and carefree attitude that kids have, living in their own world with no fear of judgment. When I viewed the first episode, I thought I would hate the series, but it is shockingly addictive and fun. No, you will not laugh out loud like you might with some comedy shows, but you will be curious to see what comes next. Fielding's creativity and unbounded daring will provide you with a viewing experience like no other. He also manages to completely change the format between season 1 and season 2 without destroying any of the show's magic. If you have an open mind and like things that go against the grain, give this show a chance. Once you've watched Luxury Comedy, I guarantee you'll find "normal" television shows boring and dull.

This is genius! A real work of love.
Growlyted12 February 2012
While this show certainly isn't for everyone, if you love Noel & his artwork/writing/acting/stand up; then it's pure genius. And he is well supported by Mike, Tom & Dolly, who were previously in Boosh, as are most of the cameos. However the two shows aren't to be compared.

Luxury is a sketch show, allowing Noel's imagination to run free and to share his unique brain with us. If you own a copy of his Art Book - "Scribblings of a Madcap Shambleton", then you can see some of his creations brought to life, most notably The Jelly Fox. (Episode 2.) There's a lot of love & hard work gone into this and I have been laughing throughout. Luxurious indeed.

What a talent, Noel's ideas are fabulous, funny, clever, stupid and most of all original. His art and model making is incredible. It all adds together for a surreal, beautiful romp in a make believe world. "It's all bleedin coming together"

A VERY Luxury Comedy indeed.
idreamincolour27 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Noel's take on comedy is the most refreshing I have ever seen to date in British comedy. The only comedy in its league or greater than it is Fawlty Towers, Black Books and by far Monty Python.

Dubbed by many as an lsd trip. The viewer imagines Noel's fantastical mind and Luxury Comedy are in close conjunction with each other. Luxury comedy takes a trip through an abstract display of values, dreams, impressions and curiosity.

Different to great British comedies of the past, every situation does not deflate to an undesirable ending for the main characters. I do not put it up there with the best of British comedy, but it is certainly a take all of its own. The humour is hard to get upon first watch, and even after multiple watches the viewer may not make all the links. This is what makes it ingenious. This is the spectacular of Noel; his ideas come from a thin base and evolve into a clever imaginary world of their own. His stand up is a lot easier to grasp and evidently Noel has put a lot into creating Luxury Comedy.

*spoilers* A personal favourite of mine is the chocolate finger with the personality that everyone hates (Everyone enjoys eating chocolate. See the link?). Also, two lasting sketches are the cooking show which has the contestants landing on the moon and the Birthday party for the 100 year old man.

Do yourself a favour and tune into the genius of Noel. It could wind up being the best TV you have seen in a long time.

Most excellent, I'm obsessed
Stella7027 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Well I was introduced to this by my friend last October. We sat down one Sunday morning and watched about four episodes in a row. I was cradling a large gin and tonic, maybe that helped.. I had never even seen the "...Boosh" before so had no preconceptions of how this show should be. Aside from the fact that obviously as a red blooded woman I FANCY Noel Fielding I came away from this gem totally delighted, and a little obsessed. I bought series one and two on DVD straight away. Yes it is a little unsettling in places, and yes I would agree that some of it does not seem to work at all, but it definitely grows on you the more you watch it. I have heard folk say that there is nothing vaguely amusing about Jeremy Beautiful chest, but there's a definite "In joke" there. Noel is painting to a Lou Reed-esque backing track, and as a long time fan of the album "Transformer" I took this to be a reference to the surreal and yet childish lyrics of the song "Andy's Chest" (reference to Warhol himself). Yes it makes the show elitist but I grow tired of the general offerings broadcast to the dumbed down masses fed on bread and circuses, It definitely beats the formulaic bilge which is "X Factor". I am probably certifiably insane from the amount of times I have put this show on of an evening, and the sad fact is that I can quote the schizophrenic flag "If it takes a year to drink a horse..." The Jelly Fox bits are some of the best I have ever seen, I actually laughed myself daft at the whole "Spoon snake's wife wants a wet room", and when we see Spoon Snake hyperventilating in fear it is pure genius. The culmination of that whole skit is inspired, there is something incredibly endearing about Noel with a cardboard castle on his head playing with finger puppets. He is so creative, but not afraid to take the mickey out of himself or show his childlike vulnerability. I pencilled him in as future husband at that point, I'm three years older than him, but I am sure we can get over the age gap... Fantasy Man is also most excellent, I will be wearing a similar costume at this year's May Day celebrations, complete with unicorn hobby horse. I also loved the Ghost of a Flea, and Sci Fi slapstick. I didn't necessarily like the clown and the mashed potato, or the Tiger with chlamydia, but again, it does grow on you the more you watch it. I found New Yoik cop so bizarre and unwatchable initially, but now he's one of my favourite characters!! The bit about getting a perm just cracked me up!! And Dondylion is brilliant. The "supporting" cast are all great, Tom Meeten as Warhol or Big Chief is a total GOD, I almost fancy him as much as Noel, he is funny and very talented. Dolly is also gifted and very funny. And I know folk berate Michael Fielding for his "bad" acting, but there's something about him I really like, he isn't trying too hard. Overall I totally love this show, I appreciate it isn't for everybody, but hey. I went to Art college, maybe that helps?? I have no problem at all with silliness and bright colours, my Art Tutor once told me I was LAZY for using primary colours and not mixing my paint!! Yes, it's not always laugh out loud funny, but so what?? It takes you on a trip!!

Luxury level Comedy
utgardaloki13 March 2018
The perfect combination of light and dark. This show is the basis of which all future comedies should be written, the standard of which all new comedies should be judged. The first series is the best contribution to comedy since Monty Python. Nothing comes close. Not even the Mighty Boosh...

This is one of the best things that's ever happened.
Snikic18 January 2020
Just to be clear, like most of his work, this is manifest imagination and reflective adorations with some inspired performance and a loose skeleton of structure. Its something somewhere between art and comedy. If, for some reason, you came to it looking for something else, you'll be disappointed. If you can let go and enjoy the quirk, its absolutely wonderful.

Noel Fielding's lost in the Field of Noel...
dethkidslife15 October 2018
Noel Fielding was so absurd & crass it was refreshng but this show proves without an anchor like Barratt (that played Howard Moon) from the Mighty Boosh, & the other writers from Boosh,Noel drifts off into the wilderness. Some think it genius but if you have to work hard at thinking why you enjoy something just to like it, well your just enjoying the fact you think you like it. I'm the last person to wish to write anything bad of Noel because I loved his outlandish colors and rock n roll weirdness being a punk rocker/metalhead (to be short aout it) that enjoys many weird and outlandish in-saneness of all sorts. I'm really not being closed minded or easily put off there just isn't anything wild or humorous about this except for the fact he got a major corporation to play this for the masses got payed a grip for it, & has highfalutin snobs praising his dribble! It more or less is a practical joke on societies BS not to mention he named it Luxury Comedy. So, I suspect I am having a bit of a laugh from this series as Noel may very well be having, but it's not the same ones the bougie ass-faces are having that proclaim this Genius Psychedelic Beauty! Shove off! ✌ Right into Noel's rancid Fields Forever!✌
