- The seismic forces that displaced Gently in 1964 are once more active - and have followed him to Durham.
- Career criminal Melvyn Rattigan gets thirty years for manslaughter, thanks to Gently, but is soon out on appeal, claiming that Gently fabricated evidence to send him down and is himself guilty of bribery and corruption. Things look even worse when thuggish Met officers lean on Bacchus to betray his boss, claiming that Gently murdered an undercover cop infiltrating local gangs. Bacchus begins to doubt their claims and Gently has further allies in retired cop Don McGhee and lawyer Gitta Bronson but, following an attempt on his life, goes on the run.—don @ minifie-1
- DCI George Gently finds himself in the frame after Mel Rattigan, described by his trial judge as a vicious career criminal, is convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 30 years in jail. To Gently's great surprise, Rattigan is soon released pending a review of his conviction as there have now been accusations of police corruption. It is now claimed that Gently, who has always maintained that the Met is corrupt, has himself been receiving regular payments from Rattigan, something that appears to be supported by bank records. The Met's Serious Crime squad also believe Gently killed DS Bill Denmore aka Ernie Rivers, who was working undercover investigating gangs that have been moving into Durham making money from slot machines. They subsequently find damning evidence in his house, including slain PC Gavin Henderson's duty notebook as well as the gun that killed him. Gently believes Rattigan is too stupid to have hatched such an elaborate scheme and goes on the run to find whoever is behind it all.—garykmcd
- Gently expresses doubts about Scotland Yard (Met) inviting John to apply for a Met job, but promises not to stand in his way. He suspects some link with the shocking release of a vicious career criminal, whom he got convicted to 30 years but is now alleged to have collaborated with. Three Met officers tell John there is no vacancy, but he must help them to bring down Gently, whom they suspect carried out the nocturnal fatal shootings of honest DS Bill Denmore, who infiltrated as Ernie Rivers the slot machines crime around Durham, and PC Gavin Henderson, who officially committed suicide, leaving his widow penniless. John and Gently don't know if they can still trust each-other while seeking to find the truth about corruption within the Met.—KGF Vissers
