Chicago – The documentary maker Steve James, one of the best in the history of cinema, has a resume of quality reporting through feature film that is stunning in its context. The director of “Hoop Dreams,” “Stevie,” “The Interrupters,” “Head Games” and the Roger Ebert biography “Life Itself” has a new doc, focusing on one repercussion of the financial crisis of 2008, subtly entitled “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail.
The film is about the Abacus Federal Savings Bank of Chinatown New York City, a financial house built through the sweat and toil of Thomas Sung, who opened the institution because he wanted to help his community… he was inspired to do that from the film “It’s a Wonderful Life” and the George Bailey character. His successful enterprise had one bad apple in it, which resulted in fraudulent mortgage applications, much like the “too big to fail” banks that did the same thing.

Legendary documentary filmmaker Steve James has a gift for effortless empathy. His films have a pre-natural ease with their subjects, chronicling the ordinary and extraordinary with equal levels of awe, and regularly showcasing an ability to enter his subjects’ inner most sanctums without feeling intrusive. James’ films are primarily observational with a few exceptions, but there’s never a sense that James’ camera is anything less than an old friend.
His latest film, Abacus: Small Enough To Jail, is a formal and tonal departure, but also a reiteration of some of James’ most prevailing thematic interests – namely underexposed communities and their mistreatment. A procedural probing into the stranger than fiction court saga of Abacus, a Chinatown bank plagued with wide-scale fraud, it’s anything but a pedestrian court film.
Embracing the disadvantages of recounting an ongoing court case — James and his crew were barred from filming the trial, and were...

Documentary examines rise in injuries in rugby union and other sports that can cause brain damage in later life
Barry O'Driscoll, the former medical adviser to the International Rugby Board, is under no illusion about the defining moment of Ireland's 13-13 draw with France in March last year. The decision to allow his nephew, the multi-capped centre Brian O'Driscoll, to return to the pitch after suffering concussion was an outrage, he said.
"If that had been allowed in the United States, during an American football match, then the officials involved would have been sacked," he said.
O'Driscoll – who resigned from the Irb's medical advisory board in 2012 in protest at its handling of the issues of concussion and brain injury – was speaking in the documentary, Head Games: The Global Concussion Crisis, which premiered in London last week. "Head Games," a new documentary from filmmaker Steve James ("Hoop Dreams"), revolves around one of the great public health issues of our time: the extreme risks of contact sports in America and the necessity for public awareness. Whether handling concussion or brain injury, James' documentary takes an inside look at the repercussions that plague athletes well after initial impact. Inspired by Chris Nowinski's book of the same name, "Head Games" follows interviews with athletes, coaches, and parents -- while utilizing medical information from the nation's leading experts to substantiate its claims. The trailer for "Head Games" reveals that the concussion crisis in America is only gaining momentum. Although many issues are discussed within the scope of brain injuries in sports, the central, philosophical question that the film hinges itself on is this: "How much of you are you willing to lose for a game?" ...

Los Angeles, Sept 18 (Reuters) - When a concussion forced WWE's Christopher Nowinski to retire in 2004, the professional wrestler and former Harvard football player wanted to understand his condition better and set out to raise awareness for sports head trauma.
The result was his 2006 book "Head Games: Football's Concussion Crisis" and a new career as a concussion activist.
Nowinski's book is the inspiration for the documentary "Head Games," directed by Steve James ("Hoop Dreams"), which opens in theaters Friday. The film explores the concussion crisis in American sports such as football, hockey and soccer as well as wrestling.
Nowinski, who will turn 34 on Monday, talked to Reuters about his personal struggles with numerous concussions, his work in educating others about them and his efforts to encourage the sports industry to take measures to prevent them.

Today’s Hot Trailer: "The public health issue of our time"
As anyone who's ever played contact sports will tell you, injuries are an unfortunate, but almost inevitable, part of any game. But, whether the athletes are Pee Wee Football kids or NFL pros, head injuries can lead to permanent impairment and even death. In his new documentary, Head Games, Academy Award-nominated director Steve James (Hoop Dreams) documents the efforts of former football player and wrestler Christopher Nowinski to uncover the truth about the consequences of sports-related head injuries and to raise awareness of the seriousness of the topic among athletes, coaches, medical professionals and members of Congress.
"This is a film that I hope reaches a broad audience," said James after Variance Films announced that it had acquired theatrical rights to the documentary, "and, in particular, amateur athletes and their families — who really need to become better informed on this huge public health issue.

Steve James is the director and producer of the documentaries “Hoop Dreams,” “Stevie,” “Reel Paradise,” “At the Death House Door,” “The Interrupters” and “Head Games,” which is awaiting release. He also co-wrote and directed the narrative feature “Prefontaine.” “Generation Food” is a collaboration between myself and author/activist Raj Patel that will tell stories about efforts around the world to try to solve the food crisis — through a documentary, a book, a website and mobile apps. On July 8, we launched a crowdfunding campaign to try to raise funds for the very first research trips we need to make on the film, to locations such as Peru and Malawi. So far, we’ve raised half our goal, with a little less then half the time left. I’ve never done this kind of fundraising before. But for some time I’ve been intrigued to see that people have had success with.

One of the bigger controversies of the 2011 Academy Awards was the lack of inclusion of The Interrupters, documentarian Steve James’ critically acclaimed look at a group of Chicago youth who look to provide alternatives to gang life for their peers, in the shortlist for Best Documentary consideration. Despite this, however, James has made quite a name for himself among film circles, and The Interrupters only added to the attention he’s brought on himself since his breakthrough documentary Hoop Dreams. In his latest subject, Head Games, however, James has chosen to look at an often overlooked aspect of sports, namely concussions and head trauma. With Chris Nowinski, an ex-football player and wrestler, as his guide, James explores the topic of head injuries in sports and what can be done to minimise their effect. A trailer for the documentary has now been released, which you can see below.

Back in June we learned the director of Hoop Dreams and The Interrupters was working on getting a new documentary together called Generation Food, a project focusing on the global food system in the 21st century and directly ties into food sovereignty activist Raj Patel's upcoming book of the same. But in the meantime, Steve James is returning to the world of sports again with Head Games, a film that looks at the overlooked effects of head trauma suffered by athletes in a culture that essentially demands that they leave that sort of concern on the field. Looks like yet another truly eye-opening documentary from James. Watch! Here's the first trailer for Steve James' Head Games, found via Thompson on Hollywood: From acclaimed director Steve James (Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters) and award-winning producer Bruce Sheridan, Head Games takes a deeper look at the devastating and long-term effects of concussions in all sports.

Coming off the fairly complex and ever-evolving issue of inner-city crime with The Interrupters, director Steve James is narrowing his scope and returning to an area that made him famous with Hoop Dreams. His next documentary, titled Head Games, returns to the arena of sports, but instead of an inspirational bent, he tackles the issue of head trauma with athletes.
Based on Head Games: Football’s Concussion Crisis, a book from footballer and WWE wrestler Christopher Nowinski, the film dives into the struggle that these performers have with speaking up against major possible damage, for fear of having to sit out in their respective sports. James has shown he can provide a wide range of perspective on issues, so I’m curious if these one will also pack the same length as his other sprawling docs. Check out the trailer below via Indiewire for the film also featuring interviews from Bob Costas,...
