In the Philippines in 1996, Josh Bradley's uncle, Steve Bradley, an American, was trying to acquire custody of him after his brother, Harold, died, believing that Josh's mother, Cara, a Filipina and an aspiring singer, was unable to take care of him. Cara decided to take Josh and run away, but had to make more money before doing so; she accepts a singing gig at a hotel. Anya Dionisio, whose mom is in no better place, financially, than Cara, believed that they were about to have their "happy ending" when her father, Mark, returned. He takes them to the hotel he's staying (that same hotel where Josh and his mother are) and planned to bring them back to the United States with him. However, a fire broke out at the hotel. Anya's father dies in the fire and Josh saves Anya by dragging her away from him and finding a way out. Anya saves Josh by clinging on to his watch as he dangles from the balcony of the hotel until it broke and a firefighter caught him; they each have a part of the watch, which his mom gave him. Josh is taken away by his uncle, who told him that his mother had died in the fire, and brought to the United States. The scene transitions to 2012, after Josh, who became an international singing sensation, finished a concert in Malaysia. Because of a flood in Bangkok that led to his having to cancel the next show there, he asks his road manager, Chit, whether they can go to the Philippines instead. Both he and Anya kept the broken watch, and are remembering the fire and each other.
