Bernhard Schir: Paul Authie

Quotes

  • Paul Authie : Stealing ancient artifacts is a serious criminal offense.

Alice Tanner : I know that.

Paul Authie : So? Stop telling lies.

    Alice Tanner : I haven't lied.

Paul Authie : You claim to have discovered a ring in the cave, but no ring has been found. No one else has seen this mysterious ring, so we have two options. Either you were mistaken, or you took it. Which is it?

Alice Tanner : Why would I mention it at all if I was going to steal it? And Shelagh will back me up. Ask her.

Paul Authie : She says she knows nothing of any ring.

Alice Tanner : I told her all about it. She went into the cave herself.

Paul Authie : She went into the cave?

Alice Tanner : Yes, she did.

Paul Authie : Your bag, please.

    Yves Biau : What?

Paul Authie : [grabbing her purse before she can reach it, he empties the contents]  Search her.

Alice Tanner : You have no right to search me.

    Yves Biau : She's right. Let's go. Let's go!

    [leaving]

Yves Biau : You shouldn't talk to her like that. You shouldn't even be here.

Paul Authie : If I want your opinion, Biau, I'll ask for it. Remember who you really work for.

  • Marie-Cecile : Did you search the cave yourself?

Paul Authie : Of course. But I wasn't the first in.

Marie-Cecile : I hope you mean our contact in the police.

Paul Authie : Not just Yves Biau. Shelagh O'Donnell. And there's the woman who discovered the cave, Alice Tanner. They all had the time and opportunity.

Marie-Cecile : Then I suggest you find out which of them took it.

Paul Authie : There's something else. Someone's been talking to the police about the Noublesso. I looked into it, and discovered our latest novice is a friend of Biau's. I had them followed. They've been meeting in secret. I think Biau double-crossed us. His loyalties are still with the authority.

Marie-Cecile : Deal with the problem. And find what belongs to us, Paul. Nothing is more important.

  • Yves Biau : I am Detective Yves Biau. This is Monsieur Paul Authie, a lawyer from Carcassonne. We have some questions. I understand you're not a professional archaeologist?

Alice Tanner : I'm a teacher. Shelagh O'Donnell's an old friend. She invited me to join the dig for a few days.

Yves Biau : So, you're on holiday.

Alice Tanner : Uh, no, not exactly. A relative in Carcassonne left me a few things in her will, but I wanted to come here first.

    Paul Authie : What things?

Alice Tanner : I don't know yet. I'm seeing the lawyer tomorrow.

Paul Authie : Most people would be curious to discover their inheritance, yet you waste your time here first. Why?

Alice Tanner : The lawyer's been away, and I don't consider my time here wasted.

Paul Authie : Or is the truth that you have a particular reason for being here?

Alice Tanner : If you must know, I've just had a really bad breakup with my boyfriend, and I wanted to get away for a while.

Paul Authie : I am not interested in your personal life, Madamoiselle Tanner.

Alice Tanner : Might I ask what your role is in this investigation, then?

Paul Authie : No, you may not. Just answer my questions, please.

  • Paul Authie : Have you taken the ring?

Shelagh O'Donnell : I told you, I never even saw it. It must have been Biau.

Paul Authie : What about Alice Tanner?

Shelagh O'Donnell : She has nothing to do with it. Why is Marie-Cecile doing this to me?

Paul Authie : She doesn't even know you're here. But she thinks you have betrayed her.

    Shelagh O'Donnell : Why?

Paul Authie : [shrugging]  Do you know why I am here? Someone must stand against blasphemers.

[taking out a set of torture tools]

Paul Authie : Someone must take God's side.

  • Paul Authie : You do not have to suffer, Shelagh. Hmm? Just tell me what I need to know.

Shelagh O'Donnell : I'm telling you the truth. Biau took the ring. He was supposed to give it to Marie-Cecile.

Paul Authie : So then why didn't he?

    Shelagh O'Donnell : I don't know! I don't know.

Paul Authie : Why does this ring matter so much?

    Shelagh O'Donnell : Marie-Cecile thinks it's the key...

    Paul Authie : What?

Shelagh O'Donnell : [louder]  Marie-Cecile thinks it's the key to the labyrinth. I don't know any more than that. I swear. I swear.

Paul Authie : [cutting off her restraints, he gives her a passport-like booklet]  You're going to call Marie-Cecile now and read her this, word for word. Be natural.

  • Marie-Cecile : Where is Shelagh?

    Paul Authie : I don't know. She... she's disappeared.

Marie-Cecile : I know her. She wouldn't be stupid enough to steal from me.

[inspecting a pin on his lapel]

Marie-Cecile : This Catholic fixation of yours puzzles me.

Paul Authie : My religion is my own affair.

Marie-Cecile : Narrow religious beliefs have brought nothing but misery to humanity. Only the Noublesso has the vision to lead the human race. There's no place in our ranks for the enemies of the Enlightenment.

Paul Authie : I assure you, my first loyalty is always to the Noublesso.

Marie-Cecile : [touching his chest]  Your heart is beating very fast.

Paul Authie : Y-You are a very attractive woman, enough to make any man's heart race.

Marie-Cecile : It isn't because you're lying? Find the ring and the books. I don't tolerate failure.

  • Shelagh O'Donnell : Marie-Cecile, it's Shelagh. I have the books and the ring. I want 20,000 euros. Meet me at the cave tomorrow at 6:00.

Paul Authie : [gesturing to end the call, he takes the phone back]  Well done. Good girl.

Shelagh O'Donnell : [he packs up his tools and starts to leave]  Will you let me go now?

    Paul Authie : No.

[as he leaves, one of the guards outside goes in and shoots her]
