  Oriane Congost : There's no gossip about the circumstances of my birth? No rumors about my mother?

  Francois : None that I know of.

  Oriane Congost : Tell me the truth... or I will rip your tongue out. What have you heard?

  Francois : There is vile talk that Intendant Pelletier is not your father. It is tavern prattle, no more.

  Francois : But no-no one would dare.

  Oriane Congost : [he tries to put a hand of comfort on her shoulder]  Leave me.
