One of Florian Habicht's first observations about New York City was the number of psychics everywhere. During his first week, he went to see one and, in order to test her accuracy, asked her what she did as a job. She replied: "You're good in front of the camera, but you're much better behind the camera, stay behind the camera, don't ever go in front of the camera!". Habicht set about making a film and decided to do the opposite. So, the film was inspired by a NYC psychic who told director Habicht to never go in front of the camera. He decided to do the opposite, and 'Love Story' was born.
The film was shot in the second half of 2010 - the year being the 40th anniversary of the classic romance film of the same title - 'Love Story' (1970). The two pictures are unrelated. The 2011 film is not a remake and was shot exclusively in New York. Ironically, the 1970 Ryan O'Neal-Ali MacGraw tear-jerker of the same name was also filmed in New York but not exclusively but predominantly.
The film was nominated for 4 New Zealand Film & TV Awards in 2011 including Best Cinematography in a Feature Film and in the end won 3 gongs including Best Film, Best Director in a Film Feature and Best Editing in a Feature Film.
The picture was the Opening Night film at the New Zealand International Film Festival in 2011.
The film was the winner of the Audience Choice Award at the Pluk de Nacht Outdoor Film Festival in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 2013.
