Sex & Nudity

  • A man rips a girl's top off, her bare breasts are visible
  • Some attraction between characters, Including a relationship between main characters, but little physical contact.

Violence & Gore

  • The first two seasons contain minimal amounts of actual blood. With Season 3 (Alicization), however, this season projects a darker narrative and contains a more blood and is more violent than the other seasons.
  • Alicization is much darker than seasons 1 and 2, and it shows in its violence, being much more violent, explicit and graphic.
  • Season 3 is more graphic and show actual blood and not pixels like Season 1 and 2
  • In the Blu-ray version, the shadow are never showing, but the eye are visible blows up, and chopping arms with a lots of sprays bloods in Season 3.
  • Seasons 1 and 2 use pixelated pink-red blood, while seasons 3 and 4 use graphic blood.
  • Seasons 1 & 2 aren't too bad; what would be expected from sword and sorcery and more PG-rating. Seasons 3 & 4 are EXCESSIVELY AND GRATUITOUSLY bloody and gory.
  • Seasons 3 & 4 should probably be rated TV-MA for nudity and gore.
  • In season 3/alicization and season 4/war of underworld there is a lot of blood if I was going rate the season 3 second half and season 4 I would rate it severe.and if I was going to compare it's violence and gore I would say it has a much blood as in Akame ga kill and some episodes have as much blood as in attack on titan
  • Sword Art Online takes place in the future within a virtual reality video game. There is no blood shown when people are stabbed or slashed at, the only thing that shows up is some red pixels that represent where a player was cut, or fatally injured. Therefore, one should keep in mind that the violent content here is virtual unless stated otherwise.
  • The storyline for episodes 1-14 goes as follows: 10,000 people are trapped in a virtual reality video game, and the only way they can escape is by completing the game, because if they die in-game, they will die in real life. It's a rather intense premise and it is said that approximately 4000 players die as a result.
  • There are near-constant battle sequences between monsters and players. These scenes can be fairly intense.
  • A few suicides (they jump off a ledge and then burst into pixels as they hit the ground).
  • Episodes 15-25 follow a similar premise as the first 14, but players do not actually die if they do in-game.
  • A boy's hand is chopped off with no blood (in the game). He then takes his other hand and lunges it through another man. He later has his hand regenerated (since it's in a game).

Profanity

  • There are occasional uses of "damn", "hell", "ass", "asshole", "bastard", "bitch", "son of a bitch", "goddamn", "pissed", and "shit" throughout.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A character gets knocked out when someone drugs him using a syringe.
  • A few people drink at a bar. They are all over the legal drinking age.
  • A boy can be seen passing something similar to a cigarette to a girl when she asks what he was doing.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The scene where a character shoots a robber to death will no doubt disturb viewers even though it was an act of self-defense. A rather intense scene as well.
  • A girl thought she saw a ghost in one episode.
  • Season 3 is the most intense and more mature season so far.
  • The main villain of Alicization - War of Underworld, Gabriel Miller (aka Subtilizer), is a complete psychopath, and the scenes involving him are unpleasant, to say the least.
  • Season 3 of Episode 10 is showing extremely intense and disturbing violence and rape scene, that is no way to watch for kids.
  • Seasons 3 & 4 (Aliceization) contain many scenes that are questionable even for early to mid teens. Rape, extreme violence, blood and gore are regular in these two seasons. Many of the scenes are emotionally disturbing for all but the most jaded viewers.
  • On Season 1 and 2, it is much tamer in TV-PG-LSV. But In the Season 3 and 4, it is now become mature content in TV-14-LSV.
  • The action and battle scenes, which are near constant can be fairly intense. There are many situations that seem hopeless and are meant to evoke an emotional response from viewers.
  • In multiple scenes, a boy witnesses a bunch of his friends being killed by monsters. One of those deaths haunts him for a long time.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • In Alicization War Of Underworld, a main character has their arm chopped off and is then stabbed through the head with a spear. An extreme amount of blood sprays everywhere
  • In season 4 part , at the end, a character feels an immense ammount of pain in their eye and proceeds to pull it out of their eye, there was a lot of blood and kind of hurt to watch. (Some people makes little painful to watch).
  • In season 3(Alicization) 2 young girls are forced to murder each other so administrator(quinella) can practise the arts of resurrection. We see a fair amount of blood as the girls stab each other, over and over, you can't see them stab each other properly, most of it happens off screen, the girls lived after administrator revived them
  • In season 3 episode 15, administrator practises resurrection on young children 2 surviving subjects talk about how the resurrection didn't always work, for example kids exploded etc, only shown as a silhouette
  • In season 3, a two man antagonists was chopped with lots of bloods with his arms by the protagonist to prevent punishing and sex with 2 girls with tied up in bed, causing more pain loosing his arms with lots of bloods sprays, a another man he tried to stop bleeding other man's arms but soon, a protagonist chopped again another man's arms and two mans will causing bleeding his arms and dying. EXTREMELY GRAPHIC.
  • Season 2 episode 13, at the end, and beginning of 14, have disturbing scenes of a boy threatening a girl, leaning over her and putting his hand up her shirt. It is clear through his actions and deranged violence he is trying to rape her. It doesn't happen.
  • In Season 2, Episode 5, Sinon slaps Kirito upon realizing that the latter was actually a boy the entire time, this scene isn't that violent and is merely just played for laughs.
  • The characters use "Pain Absorbers" in-game so as to mitigate the amount of pain they feel when they are stabbed, cut, etc. so as to prevent any actual harm from coming to their real-life bodies. In episode 24 however, the main antagonist impales Kirito with a large sword and proceeds to slowly turn off the Pain Absorber, causing him more and more pain from the wound. However, Kirito eventually removes the sword from his chest, healing the wound, and then deactivates the Pain Absorber completely. He gets his revenge on the main antagonist by cutting off the latter's forearm, slicing him in half, and impaling his head on the sword, all while the antagonist screams in agony. This is not particularly graphic, but pixelated blood is shown bursting out of the wounds. The brutality is justified by the fact that the antagonist had just tried to sexually assault Asuna, Kirito's lover, and so the over-the-top execution is intended to satisfy the aggravation of both the viewers and Kirito himself.
  • In the real world, a boy is attacked by a sadistic man with a knife, who tries to kill him. His cheek gets cut. The two struggle before the boy ends up on top of the man with the knife to his throat. He is tempted to kill the man, but instead leaves him unconscious.
  • In season 2, multiple fights occur through out this season as the game is a VRMMOFPS (Virtual-Reality Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter) it deals with many gunfights. Then, in the real world, a fight occurs between 2 boys as one becomes pinned and the other punches the pinned boy's face. The pinned boy then gets inject with a medicine (will not tell you for the sake of the story itself)
  • In season 2 episode 3, a girl is seen having a history of a brutal shoot out in her past where she killed a robber with a gun he dropped. This is repeatedly shown through out the show and may upset some viewers even though the girl does act in self defense. This is revisited in episode 14.5 and a part of the shootout could be seen in the intro.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The relationship between Kirito and Asuna is very important to the plot and becomes increasingly emotional towards the end of episode 14. There are many scenes with a potential to make viewers cry, not just due to the tragic chain of events, but because they can be heartwarming as well.
  • In one scene, a girl is killed and a boy cradles her in his arms until she disappears. It is very emotional.
  • In episode 24 the main antagonist chains a teenaged girl up with arms above her head and tears off her top, clearly intent on raping her. She begins to cry and is clearly terrified. He continues to kiss her forcibly and aggressively, which includes licking her face, and eventually tearing off a lower part of her dress, all while laughing sadistically and gloating about his plan to rape her again in real life. He is stopped and violently killed before he can go any further. While nothing explicit is shown, the scene goes on for quite a while and it is extremely creepy, easily the most intense scene in the series. It may be difficult/uncomfortable for many viewers to watch, particularly victims of sexual assault.
  • The scene where a particularly sadistic antagonist tries to kill Kirigaya is quite intense, largely because it is set in the reality, and due to the man's anger, which is emphasized by the blood vessels in his eyes. No one does end up dying however.
