As one of the children featured briefly in this documentary (as I rode a toy car in the garden of Hitchen Hatch foster home), it holds a special place in my history. Lady Hollick, the producer, was incredibly gracious and hunted down an archived VHS of the episode, which I now own. She must be commended for this pioneering series and setting the bar for documentary production values so high. A clear-eyed, engaging and personal investigation into Britain's social care programme in the 1970s, bringing into focus matters of social policy and individual hardship in a study of measured compassion and insight. It was a pacesetter for this style of documentary, and the values of World in Action live on today in series such as Panorama and Dispatches.
