- Robbie hops on the steam train. He has someone special to see, so how can it be anything but the best day ever.
- The year is 1954 and young Robbie Keeper is travelling by train to see his Father. His parents are estranged and Robbie is excited about seeing his Dad. During the journey Gloria Petrovsky boards the train and sits opposite Robbie. At first Robbie in his shyness is reluctant to talk to Gloria but slowly he warms to her and they discuss many things. In the meantime Jack is waiting at the station. It is unclear who he is waiting for. Gloria falls asleep, and Robbie finishes drawing his Fathers Day Card with depictions of the scenes that he and Gloria have imagined. In anticipation they both finally arrive at the station and approach Jack. Gloria greets him warmly; he is her lover. Robbie anxiously looks about platform but his father is nowhere to be seen. Gloria has told Robbie she has no children so he is disappointed to learn from Jack that he has a son of his own and is almost certainly not Glorias husband. He bids them farewell. Suddenly Robbie realises he has Glorias playing cards; he rushes to the end of the platform only to see Gloria and Jack kissing. Reflecting that his own father might well have a girlfriend like Gloria and how that would dash any hopes of his own parents reconciliation he, crest-fallen, returns to his seat. More than an hour passes before Robbie hears a horn beep. It is his fathers secretary who has belatedly arrived to pick him up. She has come because his Father is too busy to do so himself. Robbie gets in the car and waves to the Station Master who has been kind to him while he has been waiting. Robbie has crossed a threshold in his life and lost some of his innocence and trust forever.
