Simpson Trying to Explain
O.J. Simpson: The Interview (1996)
It's hard to really "review" or rate this film as it's basically just an interview between Ross Becker and O.J. Simpson. What's so fascinating about this 160 minute video is the fact that Simpson is clearly very worried about the public opinion of him so he was using this to try and tell his side of things and to make people understand or see him differently.
Early on O.J. admits that he is doing this video fro the money and he also admits that a large number of people might watch this and not change their minds about him. That's certainly the truest thing he says because I too very seriously doubt anyone who thinks he was guilty are going to watch this and come away thinking he's innocent.
The first ninety minutes is an actual interview where the reporter somewhat grills Simpson about various aspects of the murder as well as his abuse towards his wife. Simpson constantly explains why he is innocent and he challenges a lot of the evidence from the trial. He also loses his cool a couple times over so-called evidence that he thinks was planted. This portion of the video is certainly entertaining if you're interested in the case.
The last hour is basically Simpson taking us on a tour of his home where various bits of evidence was captured. He basically shows up the holes he saw in the prosecutions evidence against him. This leads to him eventually sitting down and explaining other issues that he had with the evidence as well as the media who handled the case.
Again, there's certainly nothing shocking or shattering here but if you're interested in the case then it's certainly worth watching since it does give O.J. a chance to explain his side. Yes, there's a lot of victim blaming and it's rare for O.J. to admit anything that is negative towards him, which is why I'm sure most people will object to this. With that said, it's still fairly interesting to watch because of how hard Simpson is trying to gain back his popularity.
