Muhammad Ali had just done the impossible, he had beaten George Foreman in the "Rumble In The Jungle" in Zaire, Africa and won the title unfairly taken from him seven years earlier. I always thought that the promoters wanted to give him an "easy" match a vacation so to speak for his first title defense so they chose Chuck Wepner a New Jersey club fighter whose tendency to cut and gush red had earned him the nickname "The Bayonne Bleeder". Indeed he had taken two hundred sutures in his face by the time he fought Ali. No one thought he would last three rounds but he knocked Ali down gave him a very tough match and almost went the distance with him. Ali later said the ex Marine was one of the bravest men he ever fought. Sylvester Stallone was inspired to write Rocky after watching this fight and Wepner's story is just as inspiring as Stallone's character.
