Worth seeing for Poppen's conducting and Ovendon's performance
Betulia Liberata is very interesting as a work. It is not one of my favourite Mozarts but there is still the beautiful melodies and distinctive style to make it wholly pleasure. This is an equally pleasing performance. The filming is very straightforward but never disengaged, while the venue is very welcoming. The musical values are superb, the orchestral playing consist of very crisp string playing, delicate woodwinds and also a brass section with bite. Christopher Poppen does a splendid job conducting, especially vivid in Pietà, Se Irato Sei. The singing is animated and really well done in general. Though if I were honest I didn't care for Marijana Mijanovic's voice. Her chesty lower register is rich, but there is a noticeable break midrange which contributes to lack of steadiness in her high notes and ornamentations. She does command the stage wonderfully though, it's just that her voice isn't my taste. Jeremy Ovendon's ringing top, very controlled softer moments and effortless technical clarity immediately makes him stand out among the rest, though Julia Kleiter sings with breathtaking purity and attention to conveying the text clearly and while occasionally on the ponderous side Franz-Josef Selig does sing resonantly. In conclusion, Ovendon and Poppen are the reasons to see this Betulia Liberata. 8/10 Bethany Cox
