This movie was so messed up... but I liked it anyway.

Summary: This movie was so messed up... but I liked it anyway. 70/100 (B-)

Even though it's not even close to the awesomeness of the first movie, still a good movie. The animation was great and the jokes were funny enough. The whole audience was dying of laughter! There were a lot of strange and messed up moments in the movie, there was also a reference to "The Shining" and I was like: What the hell am I seeing? Anyway, this movie is anything but boring. I couldn't take my eyes of the screen, I was so entertained the whole running time. The first SpongeBob movie was already surreal and weird, this one... *sigh* has crossed the line.

The 3D was incredible, well done and eye-popping. There's a great action sequence near the end of the movie with the pirate involved (performed by Antonio Banderas), and it was so damn funny and fast-paced. On the downside, some repetitive jokes become tiresome as the running time goes, the above-water stuff was way too short and well... actually the whole movie was very short to me, I don't know why, this movie should be longer! Again, the whole above-water stuff that you can see in the trailer was actually 20% of the movie, seriously WTF, I wanted more.

I left the theater a bit unsatisfied. I felt like I just watched a movie that's 50 minutes long. Also, another of my issues was the ending, the songs in the ending were unnecessary and a little bit annoying. In addition, another issue was the villain. Antonio Banderas was great, but his character is not very well developed, he was a quite uninteresting villain. Leaving aside its flaws, I noticed one thing, the editing is really well done and even though it has some messed up moments the movie is never confusing because its premise is so short and easy to follow.

The editing makes the whole film more dynamic and easy to understand. So, in conclusion this SpongeBob movie is not even close to the 2004 film, but it has enough visuals and clever gags to satisfy the audience in general. The above-water sequences are so damn enjoyable, the 3D looks fantastic and there are a lot of moments in the movie that are so damn surreal and messed up! Think of an animated version of Interstellar. Also, I don't want to spoil it, but I'm just gonna say that first scene with the dolphin was so strange.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of people will dislike this film, mainly because of the ending, some annoying songs, the strangely uncomfortable moments and the shortness of the film. But to me, it is not a bad movie at all. I highly recommend it, especially if you're fan of the TV show. If you're going to see it, you must see it in 3D and on a huge screen. It is a pretty good spectacle. It is great that the movie took advantage of its 3D format, it looked great. Also, do not forget to see Squidward's dancing in the end credits, it will remind you to the old times. (B-)

It's okay
nukeman-0035914 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
For most Nick movies, they are rarely any good okay movies. Heck, even theatrical releases aren't even much. The recent ones being TMNT Bay bombs. In this plot we get off the ground with live action Banderas getting a book, one thing i did like is the creative ways of Plankton attacking the Krusty Krab. It is then he loses, or actually it's a robot in disguise, before Plankton could get the formula it disappears. Krabs then turns all the people on Plankton and then before being attacked Spongebob saves him, and at first you've been wondering. I thought this is about superheroes. Trust me it'll come, just at the end. They then make it a Mad max parody, everyone turns on Spongebob and Plankton and everything's a wreck. I should mention that the movie like the first one references old episodes this does the same, and some of the garbage ones. There's an awful song in it like Atlantis Squarepantis, Plankton goes into his mind like in the inside job and also when Patrick takes the key like in Idiot box. After the mad max plot ends they time travel back and the transition are amazing. They go back and grab the false formula and they get to the surface after almost sacrificing Spongebob, so this is were we get the sponge out of water part. Which is weird because, beside the first film when they got out of the water in the cyclops scene. They've been out of the water for many episodes. They are confronted by a human, yet Spongebob and Patrick forgot what humans are. They confront him and ask how he did it. The same way Neverending story 3 did it, by realizing the book writes their story, and he writes himself to have the formula. Then writes them into death until they do the same. Then the come back with powers When they take it back and then stop him from writing in the book. When he's stopped for a short moment, he goes after the book. The book is burned and then they go after the formula all are defeated quick until Plankton beats him and Spongebob writes them back home. To the way things were, and Banderas sings with seagulls. I should probably tell you there were seagulls that usually were with Banderas. I didn't talk about them, because they were pointless and unfunny minions, just like the minions. Also Bubbles the dolphin, who prevented stuff from happening has a scene and an ending scene. That was like an awful version of Epic Rap battles of history. They end it and cue credits. It takes an hour or so to get to the hero part and about forty to fifty seconds to get to the out of water and mostly is the blandest Mad Max parody. It's okay

Fun and Goofy. Messed Up in Many Entertaining Ways Warning: Spoilers
Narrative, obviously, isn't one of the new Spongebob film's strengths, and to expect too much of it from that department, warrants a huge disappointment. Be that as it may, it does not make Spongebob any less of an entertainment.

The movie plunges us back to Bikini Bottom where the legendary Krabby Patty gets stolen. This sparks a revolt among loyal followers (this includes almost every single citizen in the underwater community), and being partly blamed, Spongebob is forced to surge forth to the surface, and head to the land, blasting into the human world. Joined by Plankton, Squidward, Patrick, Sandy, and the restaurant owner Mr. Krabs, Spongebob embarks on a mission of apprehending the enemy, Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas), and reclaiming the missing krabby patty recipe.

Whatever the movie intends to deliver doesn't really matter, because ultimately in the end, what strikes most is that Spongebob ends up doing what it is supposed to do and being what it is used to be: a comic relief. Regardless of how thin and scarce the material is, the movie comes out as a confident extension of the TV show we've always loved, and for everybody who adores the character since childhood, it will be easy to appreciate Spongebob for what it really is and has always been. For the record, last February, I badly criticized Fifty Shades of Grey for its almost empty source material. Spongebob may not be any different, and I find it difficult to pick better choice between the two, but taking into account every single good attribute from both films, Fifty Shades doesn't even strike as a worthy competition. Sorry fans. Lol Bursting with vibrant colors and loud with goofy one- liners, SPONGEBOB MOVIE: Sponge Out Of Water is all for the jokes. It's messed up, but in many ridiculously entertaining ways. This is definitely a movie that will not come across as something less than amusing. The kids (and kids-at-heart) will definitely love it. 7/10

A satisfying second outing,...if not a little too outrageous
There are a couple of factors that come into play when TV cartoon characters have their big screen appearances. The biggest one being that the cartoon became so popular, a movie needed to be made. Sometimes it also signals the end of the series. The Spongebob Squarepants Movie (2004) was originally creator's Stephen Hillenburg's finale to the TV series. However, after exceeding box office predictions, Spongebob was renewed for several seasons later. One would think after that showing would also warrant another big movie to be made soon after. Well it came,...surprisingly really late compared to how well received movies get a green lit sequel so quickly afterward. Sometimes, though the time is worth the wait and this can be said for Spongebob's 2nd big screen entry with some of the usual flaws (most obvious being continuity).

Like many other Spongebob episodes and the movie before this, Plankton is up to his old tricks again; attempting to steal Mr. Krabs' secret Krabby Patty formula. Except this time, there's more going on involving the secret formula than even Plankton knows. Out of nowhere, Krabs' secret recipe vanishes among the city of Bikini Bottom when a mysterious individual named Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas) enters the picture. With that, the city of Bikini Bottom descends into chaos, so Spongebob decides he needs to find a way of getting the recipe back in order to restore his hometown into a tranquil society. The writing headed by Glenn Berger and Jonathan Aibel who were also the brains behind Kung Fu Panda (2008) and Monsters Vs Aliens (2009) accomplished what most fans of the series should enjoy. And although Stephen Hillenburg is not directing this time, his right hand man Paul Tibbitt is.

As an overall presentation there aren't many issues with this production. One of the most notably different things about this movie is that it doesn't exactly stay in line with the previous story of the last film. It's really difficult whether to classify this is a sequel or not. It feels like more of a reboot (for those who are debating). Nonetheless this is a minor flub. All the memorable voice-actors from the TV show return once again to voice their undersea counterparts and that's always important. Antonio Banderas as Burger Beard was certainly an interesting choice only because who could've thought Banderas could play such a convincing pirate? He proved himself of that and for his age, he still gets around quite well (which was also proved in The Expendables 3 (2014)). The dialog also leads to number of funny moments, all of which each main character gets even screen time to make a funny. Many of which these moments break the 4th wall.

This also can be a weak point unfortunately in the screenplay because being silly is fun, but the comedy sometimes goes a bit overboard. What the first film has that this one doesn't is a sense of realism. Here, some scenes get a bit nonsensical to where it denies the universe that The Spongebob Squarepants Movie (2004) established. The reasons behind these frivolous events are explained, which is appreciated, but this is what detaches this entry from its last and what makes it questionable to whether it is a sequel or not. Then again, with these outlandish ideas come alternative animation visuals. For Spongebob's traditional animation sequences, the scenes are perhaps even more honed than the first entry; it looks crisp, clear and bright. Yet, what stands out even more is the live-action animation (also directed by Mike Mitchell, best known for directing Sky High (2005)). The character textures and 3D renderings look very well unified in their own right. Spongebob and friends almost look touchable and that's awesome.

Next in line with that are some very entertaining action sequences. This is more of the focus when the story hits its third act but it's worth the wait. Honestly for a Spongebob feature, seeing this much action never seemed like a possibility or interest the producers would ever want. Case in point, that was an incorrect assumption. A number of action sequences actually become quite inventive with how the conflict ensues. Well done. Phil Meheux's cinematography for the live-action scenes are also well constructed. Seeing that he was also the guy with the eye in The Mask of Zorro (1998),...which also had Antonio Banderas, seems only fitting. Much of the camera shots are well lit and wide enough to get a clear view of the scenery. John Debney, a composer who has previously scored multiple family comedy and action related films maintains his style by making the scenes appropriate where they need to be while including the Spongebob theme. Although there is one scene that doesn't belong to Debney which is where the film crew directly takes a snippet of Ennio Morricone's music from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). This is still fun though.

Spongebob's second big screen outing is rightfully made bigger and more profound. The animation is more spot on, the returning voice-actors / live-action performance from Banderas, action and comedy all work hand in hand to make a fun ride. Occasionally though, it does go out into left field a bit more than its predecessor.

same irreverent chaotic fun
SnoopyStyle25 July 2015
The Krusty Krab family and Plankton get into a food fight. The secret formula disappears into thin air. After running out of Krabby Patties, Mr. Krab blames it on Plankton and leads a mob after him. SpongBob knows that Plankton didn't steal the formula and helps him escape Bikini Bottom. While Bikini Bottom becomes an apocalyptic dystopia, Plankton builds a time machine to go back before the chaos to get the formula with SpongBob. With the help of magical dolphin Bubbles, the SpongBob crew goes to the real world to confront the pirate Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas) who has stolen the Krabby Patty formula.

It's chaotic fun. It's random. It's sarcastic. It's the cartoon turned into a movie except the 3D real world action. For some reason, the real world isn't as much fun. It becomes SpongBob superhero action. It's still the same irreverent idiocy but I just like them more in 2D animated form.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water
jboothmillard30 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I probably only watched one or two full episodes of the popular Nickelodeon show, which was number 28 on The 100 Greatest Cartoons, but I enjoyed the first movie featuring the sponge named Bob with square pants, I was definitely up for another movie, a stand-alone sequel that followed a decade later. Basically a pirate named Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas) travels to Bikini Atoll, opening a treasure chest he obtains a magical book with the power to make any words written into it a reality. The book tells the story of SpongeBob SquarePants (Tom Kenny), the over-optimistic sea sponge who lives in Bikini Bottom, he works in the Krusty Krab restaurant. The owner Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown) has spent several years protecting the secret Krabby Patty formula from his restaurant rival Plankton, owner of the Chum Bucket. One day, Plankton attacks the Krusty Krab and attempts to steal the formula, after a fight he appears to accept defeat, but he uses a decoy of himself, while the real Plankton gains access to Krabs' vault, stealing the formula, leaving a fake in its place. SpongeBob catches Plankton and they engage in a tug of war over the formula, but it magically disappears before either of them can claim it. Without the secret formula, no Krabby Patties can be made, causing customers to become ravenous, SpongeBob is the only who believes Plankton is innocent and creates a large soap bubble for them fly away in and escape. Bikini Bottom is immediately reduced to an apocalyptic wasteland, due to the absence of the Krabby Patty. SpongeBob proposes he and Plankton team up to find the formula, Plankton does not quite understand the concept of teamwork. Plankton comes up with the idea to build a time machine, to travel back in time to the moment when the formula disappeared, they are helped by the most intelligent computer possible, Plankton's computer wife Karen (Jill Talley). They assemble the time machine, but end up travelling to the future, where they meet magical dolphin Bubbles (Matt Berry) who acts as an overseer of the galaxy, they cause him to lose his job. They then travel back in time and succeed in retrieving the formula, only for them to realise they inadvertently grabbed the fake. Burger Beard converts his pirate ship into a food truck to sell Krabby Patties at a beach resort, while the town are about to sacrifice SpongeBob to "appease the sandwich gods", when he and Mr. Krabs smell Krabby Patties. SpongeBob, Patrick Star (Bill Fagerbakke), Mr. Krabs, Squidward Tentacles (Rodger Bumpass) and Sandy Cheeks (Carolyn Lawrence) follow the scent to the surface. Then Bubbles shows up, he says he actually hated his job, and repays the sea creatures by giving them the ability to breathe on land, and launches them from his blowhole to the surface. The team land on the beach, finding the smell of Krabby Patties coming from Burger Beard's food truck, the pirate used the magical book and rewrote the story to steal the secret formula for himself. Burger Beard then writes the magical book to banish the gang to Pelican Island, but SpongeBob uses a discarded page from the book to transform himself and the others into superheroes with special powers. They become The Invincibubble (SpongeBob), Mr. Superawesomeness (Patrick), Sour Note (Squidward), The Rodent (Sandy), and Sir Pinch-a-Lot (Mr. Krabs). Seeing them return, Burger Beard flees with the formula and they give chase, during the battle, the team manage to destroy the book, but the pirate overpowers them one by one. But Plankton saves them, transformed into the muscle-bound Plank-Ton, the Krabby Patty formula is retrieved, Burger Beard is sent flying and banished to Bikini Atoll, and Plankton returns to the formula to Mr. Krabs. In the end, the city of Bikini Bottom is finally restored and Plankton reassumes his status as a business rival, everything is returned to the status quo. Also starring Dee Bradley Baker as Perch Perkins and seagulls voiced Kevin Michael Richardson, Billy West, Alan Carr (UK) and Stacey Solomon (UK). This is another obvious slice of self-aware silliness and absurdity, the plucky leading character is loveably eccentric, fans of the show will enjoy the bigger scale adventure for the aquatic hero, the mix of live action, including the amusing Banderas, and fantastic computer animation, and newcomers to the whole thing will also have fun, lots of laughs and entertainment for all the family, a great live action/animated comedy adventure. Very good!

10/10 for the trailer 2/10 for the actual film
sabz-984-44634429 March 2015
Okay, maybe my review may be slightly unfair - I'm a 24 year old male...

My verdict is that it was just a very kiddy film targeted to audiences of around 5/6 years old. It wasn't funny at all, it was extremely boring and simply predictable.

I rate it 2/10

But then, here's the verdict of my 11 year old sister...

Her verdict is that it's the worst film she has ever seen and after months of waiting for it, she asked to walk out 45 minutes into the film.

Her rating is 1/10.

You make your own mind up - If you want to take your child (unless they're aged 3-7) to watch a film this Easter holiday, opt for Cinderella, or something else - Because this was just awful

An extended Spongebob episode with some impressive animation
rgkarim8 February 2015
What do you feel when you hear the familiar lines of "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?" Is it annoyance, or is it a sense of joy at singing the happy go lucky tune? Do you cringe from the gruffness of the sailor's voice, or do you turn up the volume to the theme song you know and love? No matter what your reaction, you can expect it to get stuck in your head if you go to see the latest movie about the yellow sponge. That's right, the next SpongeBob movie has landed in theaters and here is …

What you might expect: Childish Humor, A basic SpongeBob plot, interesting animation choices, and Antonio Banderas making a fool of himself.

What you get:

1. Childish humor is the staple of the Nickelodeon series, and this movie is no exception to the rule. Little kids will enjoy the familiar bouts of our yellow hero, as Tom Kenny brings his energetic, ADHD mannerisms to the silver screen. SpongeBob doesn't pull any punches in this film, starting over the top with a war against plankton using condiments and spanning across familiar plot elements like time traveling and super powers. Like most episodes he still is a gullible, optimistic boob, who seems to be naïve to all the bad things in life. His ear splitting laugh comes at you in full surround sound and his repetitive jokes will crash in an epic tidal wave of either enjoyment or annoyance. Helping tow the line of jokes is the chubby pink starfish Patrick, whose idiotic tendencies are stronger than ever. Like his yellow chum, the pink buffoon acts as the medium for stereotypical fat jokes that revolve around starving to death, licking pictures of food, and controlling ice cream cones to battle evil. He has a few idiotic quirks, but there isn't anything special in this movie. Despite all the familiar antics though, the humor will entertain your young ones, my theater in particular filling with the gleeful squeals of the numerous kids. I myself laughed at a few of the well timed puns, enjoying references to some of the earlier episodes and the clever jokes hidden within. If you're not a fan of this humor though, then sorry parents, but this movie doesn't have as much hidden adult humor as you might like. You might find watching your kids laugh, enough of a reward to go see the movie in the film.

2. As for the plot of the movie, no surprise here that it is the same simplistic tale that we have seen in the hundreds of SpongeBob episodes, just extended. Again the tale is centered on the golden sandwich of artery clogging goodness the Krabby Patty. We've seen the countless renditions of its theft, but this time we surprisingly get a new twist on its disappearance, which is poorly explained in the tale perhaps to keep the "mystery" going. Regardless in the effort to find the delightful treat, we learn just how much the denizens of Bikini Bottom depend on the burger, with the whole town evolving into anarchy due to its absence. Along the way we get SpongeBob teaming, or TE-AMing, up with an unlikely ally and leading to random story points aiding their journey. A running gag with a dolphin got a little weird for me, and his "porpoise" to the plot was a bit of a stretch for me. In a movie like this though, I don't think a conducive story is what you are going for, but just be ready from some pretty trippy stuff to happen.

3. Animation wise the movie is solid. Though not as fluid as the animation in the earlier season, SpongeBob's team has done their work once more. A little over half the film is in 2-D cartoon format, with brighter colors and some computer assistance to bring the more exciting scenes to life. However, the one area that most of you are wondering about is the computer generated 3-D effects that the trailer promises. Ignoring the die- hard cartoon purists rants; the CGI work is impressive and fun as the team transverses from sea to land. For me the animation was even better, and was the more "unique" aspect of the movie as the team moves about the real life environment. In addition this scene quickly put the petal to the metal, and quickly jumps into the action frame as they don their super powers. The superhero scenes are still funny and simplistic, but fans again will like the antics to be had as they fight against the evil burger beard.

4. Speaking of burger beard, poor Antonio has stepped into one of his more ridiculous roles. The once suave swordfighter is reduced to a rather lame pirate who spends his days talking to animated seagulls, finding an all powerful book, and luring the masses to his burger stand. Banderas is simply silly in this tale, and does over the top gestures and screaming to make everyone laugh. I myself didn't laugh much at the lines, but I give him props for entertaining the kiddies. Not much more to say about this one, so let's wrap things up.

This movie was fun and a great choice for taking your kids to the movies. While I like the first movie much better, Sponge Out of Water has a plenty of silly fun to enjoy. With decent animation and voice work to support our merry band of heroes, one will feel they have landed in an extra long episode of the show. Worth a trip to the theater? Not really, but if your kids are dying to go to the movies then by all means give it a shot. Again be ready for anything to happen, even a rap battle between dolphin and seagulls.

My scores are:

Animation/Adventure/Comedy: 7.5 Movie Overall: 6.5-7.0

It's A sneezer for the adults, but fun for old sponge bob fans.

Warning: Spoilers
Btw. this is my first review! hope you enjoy! I saw this movie a day after it came out. I was excited to see a new sponge bob movie! I kid you not, the time travel scenes did make me feel dizzy. I caught some of the old jokes like "My Leg!" While watching this movie, I enjoyed the superhero forms but I thought it was gonna be like the old episode. I took my little sister to see it and she liked it because of Spongebob characters. I liked the rap battle between the Dolphin and the Seaguls. A nice om-age to Epic Rap Battles of History. It was a very comical experience (I.e. the cannon balls in the bubbles and the ice cream flying out of the shop. All in all, a great movie for the kids, and fun for old sponge bob fans like me

A different Spongebob than what I recall
StevePulaski7 February 2015
If you were born in the mid-to-late nineties, "Spongebob Squarepants" was likely top priority whenever you were fortunate enough to have TV time or the Television all to yourself. Even as I approach my twenties, and my taste in films and TV shows has gotten, what I'd like to believe, is a lot more sophisticated, certain childhood shows are still towards the top of my priority list, and it's rare I don't go a week without watching a few episodes of shows like "Arthur," "The Berenstain Bears," or "Spongebob Squarepants." Even as I sat in a dark room of about fifteen young children as the oldest person in that theater alone to watch "The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" , as soon as the film opens and I heard that infectious and memorable theme song to "Spongebob," a cheery, indelible grin was stuck on my face and maintained itself for a good portion of the film.

If nothing else, "The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" has the ability to shatter cynicism as soon as it begins, and carries through with a charming sense of silliness that we've all expected from its aquatic cast. I remember one of the first DVD collections of the show was called "Nautical Nonsense," and what a perfect summation of "Spongebob" to anyone who hasn't seen or heard of the program (if there are people).

The film opens with live-action footage of a pirate named Burger-Beard (Antonio Banderas), who discovers a book that tells the story of Spongebob and his friends, all of whom living under the sea in Bikini Bottom, and that anything written in the book immediately becomes truth. We are plunged underwater to zero in on all the action, where we see the Krusty Krab, owned by Mr. Krabs (voiced by Clancy Brown) and the place of Spongebob's (voiced by Tom Kenny) employment, is thriving, while Sheldon J. Plankton's (voiced by Mr. Lawrence) restaurant across the street, Chum Bucket, is just as empty as it ever was. This results in a bitter war between the two restaurants, through the use of condiments and fast-food, which is surprisingly fun and sets the film's zealous, incredibly chaotic tone right away.

Plankton has always tried to get the secret formula for the Krusty Krab's delicacy known as the Krabby Patty, and just when he has the bottle that contains it, fighting Spongebob for it, the formula disappears right before their eyes. The disappearance of the Krabby Patty secret formula causes an entire breakdown of social order (why the sandwich can't be made even after the recipe is lost, despite Spongebob being employed at the restaurant for almost two decades is beyond me, but moreover). As a result, Spongebob and Plankton form a team in order to try and work together to obtain the formula, while the entire town of Bikini Bottom embraces leather clothes and completely crumbles from the lack any kind of order in the community.

Discard any preconceived notion as to how random and senseless you assumed the show "Spongebob Squarepants" to be, as this film is much more random and scattershot than anything related to the character you've seen before. The film, for starters, is a cross between traditional animation and live-action combined with CGI, which, thankfully, is a gimmick that's underused, despite what the trailers convey (it only takes up about twenty minutes of a ninety-three minute runtime). The film, however, is one of the most psychedelic things I have witnessed in theaters; a complete visual hodgepodge and auditory cacophony of madness and randomness. Consider the scene where Spongebob and Plankton embrace time-traveling in order to obtain the formula and stumble into a plethora of different dimensions, one where they meet a live-action Dolphin named Bubbles, who is ordered to assure Jupiter and Saturn do not collide.

Even the songs in the film, unlike in the original, 2004 film, are built off entirely random verses and harmonies, and this is one of the biggest issues with "The Spongebob Movie" as a whole. Its lack of narrative cohesion and the fact that it purposefully muddles itself, often mistaking random senselessness for humor. The film is more reminiscent of those "hip" animated programs like "Adventure Time" and "Regular Show," which, again, utilize the randomness that seems to amuse the best of this and the last generation over actual storytelling. "Spongebob" has never been an entirely linear cartoon, but earlier episodes stuck to some sort of plot and etched in jokes and gags that were related to the plot. This film often squanders that principle, and if something is funny, it's usually because of the idea that if you throw enough things at the wall, eventually something will stick.

Give "The Spongebob Movie" credit for completely embracing its silly idea, exhausting every possibility to be completely asinine in every way. I have a feeling young children will like it the best, but the reaction amongst tweens will be decidedly mixed. While the characters and their personalities haven't changed a great deal, this feels like a totally different "Spongebob" than what I grew up with. Whether it's because I've grown up or the show has really underwent some kind of stylistic change is a question I'm still deciding on at this time.

Horrible
tadre8 February 2015
I love Spongebob. I watch with my kids and occasionally alone - I have seen the first movie several times and enjoy it every time, but this,... this was .....boring. The story was stupid, and not Spongebob stupid, just stupid. The songs were uninspired - what happened to the person who wrote "Now That We're Men"? I found myself just waiting for them to go ashore and then they did and it was nothing special. The pirate was annoying and the dolphin was obnoxious. I know they could have done better, they did the first time. I feel cheated by the experience, like they knew I would be forced to take my children and pay my money so why bother putting in too much effort. When the movie ended I said to my children, I want my money back, and a dad in front of us turned around to express his disappointment.

Nautical Nonsense takes on a whole new dimension (literally)
Drive-in_Zeppelin8 February 2015
Seriously though, unless you have been living under a rock like Patrick the starfish for the last few decades, you should at least have formed an opinion about the Spongebob series. It has a talking sponge that lives in a pineapple, flips burgers, and goes on nonsensical adventures with his slow-witted friend and neighbor. You either find it whimsical and funny or you don't.

This holds true for the second feature film Sponge Out of Water as we find our beloved residents of Bikini Bottom forced to enter our three dimensional world for the first time. After a flamboyant pirate (Antonio Banderas) manages to steal the much sought after secret Krabby Patty recipe using a magic book, Spongebob and co. have their world plunged into anarchy with the sudden loss of the greasy burgers.

As expected (if you watched the show as a kid), our heroes have to go on a series of misadventures to recover the secret recipe and stop the mischievous pirate after he commits industrial theft.

The thing your probably not expecting (if you've seen the trailer), is only a very small portion of this short film is actually 3D. It's not glaringly awful, and actually seems to work fairly well in a movie about abstract craziness that features time-traveling dolphins.

It's fun, plain and simple. The children in the audience we're giggling with delight, the adults found humor enough to laugh, and all in all I appreciated the blatant references to movies like Mad Max, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and The Shining. It's a movie that is directed at children, but is enriched with plenty of adult humor in the form of puns and famous movies references.

Just enjoy it for what it is and you won't be disappointed. The animation is surreal and enjoyable as always, the voice-acting is tried and true, and everyone in the theater seemed to enjoy it thoroughly.

Mild drug use is recommended for optimal viewing and humor extraction.

Good Movie
hakeemtarabulsi15 March 2021
This movie was on my 'Watchlist' for pretty long time, although I am not a big fan of 'SpongeBob SquarePants' TV show.

Well, I really was amazed; the story has an uncomplicated plot, but at the same time very entertaining.

So if you didn't have the opportunity to watch this movie before, my advice is to grab your popcorn and beer, and get ready for 1 hour and 32 minutes of fun.

Ridiculously Weird, Funny, and a Good Storyline in Disguise (warning, must be able to at least tolerate Spongebob!) Warning: Spoilers
Wow! Weird. Weird. Crazy. Wackily Weird. What else would you expect from a Spongebob movie? Spongebobbiness to the exponential factor!! But I was certainly surprised. Underneath all that wackiness, there is a nicely structured storyline and the characters (both spongebob's team and Burger Beard) have clear motivations with clear stakes at risk.

Antonio Banderas (Burger Beard) humanizes this story, it gives it the real world dimension. Excellent. He is so vivid and expressive. With just gestures and a little bit of words, we figure out what Burger Beard wants and why. Note: I loved Bandera's pirate-hybrid ship!

The story begins with a mystery - which is puzzling, but that's the whole point--to keep the audience interested. Burger Beard retrieves a magical book that will grant him access to the secret recipe of Krabby Patties...Zaap!

Then things go completely wacky (almost intolerable!) when the film switches to 2-D: the underwater Spongebob world. This part of the movie takes too long and gets off tangent too many times. At several points I wondered if I was watching the same original story. A lot of detours occur around the chaos that ensues when the recipe for the patties disappears mysteriously...Zaap! Ahh! You see the connection?

In a Spongebob-style bizarre and insufferable way, the protagonists try to figure out a solution to the problem. They go through several motions here, the movie gets a bit boring during this part. Then they come up with a preposterous solution that involves nachos and an old fashioned photo-booth, which eventually we figure out it has a clear objective -- they meet an alien (which will make some sort of nonsensical sense later in the film).

Midpoint, Spongebob and his friends land in human 3-D beach. Their 3-D shapes are wonderful, great designs! The sequence in the beach (the one shown in the trailers) is hilarious and keeps you interested. As the team navigates 3D human-land, meanwhile, Burger Beard is happily growing his business. Then things turn around when Beard meets the "Justice League" (Spongebob and his friends).

In a convenient manner (convenient events are pervasive across the film--which makes sense because of its weirdness tone)...ZAAP! again, the underwater cartoons now turned 3-D, become superheroes thanks to Burger Beard's attempt to vanish them and thanks to the thankful "alien." This is when the final sequences, the battles to retrieve the Krabby Pattie, begin.

In the end, friendship and justice prevails.

This film brings to memory "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," with the combination of 2-D cartoons and live action.

My daughter wants to see this craziness again! She liked it and she's intrigued by a lot of the wackiness. I will watch it again too, not because I like Spongebob (I absolutely don't!!) but because I enjoyed the storyline and Bandera's acting. I admit it, I liked the film...

Let a little bit of wackiness rock your life.

Go and get spongedbobbed!

Thanks for reading.

Cheers.

Nautical nonsense is something we miss
Zerbey8 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The first Spongebob movie left me cheering for more, and a rare 10/10 vote on IMDb I might add. The series, particularly the first few seasons, is some of the best animated comedy of its generation.

So, we go onto the sequel and the plot is similar to the first and sticks to the tried and tested formula - Plankton is trying to steal the Krabby Patty formula again. Only this time, forces unknown steal it just before he gets the chance so he must te-am, or is it team? up with Spongebob to find out who.

This outgoing has funny parts and the animation is definitely more polished, but somehow the jokes just don't quite flow as well and the plot seems like it's taking a back burner to set pieces. I felt many of the scenes just tailed off as the writers ran out of ideas and moved onto the next set piece. There were some funny parts, don't get me wrong it just didn't seem to work all of the time.

In all, it was an entertaining movie and I enjoyed it but somehow it's not the same. Very similar to the newer Spongebob seasons it just seems like the magic is fading. Hopefully this isn't the end yet, I for one will be sad when Spongebob finally hangs up his spatula.

Not a fan
fashiontumblr3 April 2015
I have to admit even though I'm an adult I've always been a big fan of sponge bob, I loved the first movie and the episodes. This movie however is a real disappointment! It lacked the witty one liners that the sponge bob episodes are famous for. I thought the seagulls and Antonio Banderas got far too much screen time, I think they were trying to appeal to a younger audience instead of the die hard sponge bob fans. The story was just boring and not well thought out. I felt that this movie did not pay reference or homage to the episodes or past movie. There was only one musical number with sponge bob in the whole movie, which really surprised me because the first movie had great songs like 'goofy goober rock'. This show was a part of my childhood but I kinda felt like this movie ruined it.

Decent, but not very exciting
Filvies1445 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This was an OK movie, but hate to spoil it, fans, but this is a kinda boring movie. First of all, more than half the movie is NOT OUT OF WATER! It's just a bunch of talk and work between Spongebob and Plankton. That's so iratating. Theydon't go out of water til near the end! The first one was better. It's way more fun than this movie. But actually, I thought this was better than the newer seasons. And that's because the writers of season 1-3 come back to work on this movie. I hope they come for season 10! Then, I can watch Spongebob again! But overall, it's a little boring. I think you should have fun with the original movie instead. See y'all later, folks! Plot: 5/10 Animation: 8/10 Characters: 6/10 Total: 5.5/10

Please Save Your Brain Cells... and Your Kids'
jc-imdb985 August 2015
This is pure junk. I've watched a good number of kid's movies with my kids and I deeply regretted taking them to watch this. I couldn't wait for the thing to end. I left feeling sorry for the brain cells they had just lost.

This rivals Will Farrell's Step Brother movie at the very bottom of the scum barrel. That's saying a lot.

What else can I say. There isn't anything else to say. I've said it all. But IMDb is forcing me to add more lines. Blah.

I guess that last paragraph was not enough. So I'll keep typing nonsense until it goes through. Wow. This is stupid.

SpongeBob's return to the big screen in a grand scale.
Reno-Rangan24 October 2015
It's been a decade since the first film, definitely a long wait for the fans. That film was a hit, but I don't know why it took so long for the second. Honestly, I loved this one too, albeit I'm not a die-hard fan, just a supporter. One of the beautiful cartoon universe with unique characters that can entertain all ages. The new addition, especially for this film only, the Antonio Banderas did his part wonderfully. Never seen before stunts in SpongeBob world that comes in the final battle.

Whenever I review an animation movie, I usually bring 2D and 3D animation topics to denote how the technology has transformed. 'Asterix' from France, 'Doraemon' from Japan, and recently America's own 'Mister Peabody' remodelled in 3D and saw tremendous success. So why not SpongeBob, but only for a small portion they have tried and it was awesome. Most importantly the story blended well with the twist in the character reformation.

This movie is in a second batch queue for the Oscar race, that mean a slim chance to get a nominee, but I don't think it will make. That does not mean the movie is bad, it was very good, so entertaining and super funny. Simply not an Oscar material, that's all. If anyone hasn't seen it yet, I absolutely suggest to try it out. I hope it won't take another 10 years for the next movie in the series.

It's good to see Spongebob back.
chasebangerter22 March 2015
I am a personal fan of the Spongebob show as I think that they are hilarious especially in the early episodes. Going into this film, I was expecting to laugh a lot and the movie did exactly that, I laughed a lot. The movie about Spongebob and Plankton, who were once rivals, teamed up together to find the secret formula is a fun one and sometimes, even a little bit too crazy. There are a lot of elements that it really felt like that was in some sort of crazy acid trip because there are incredibly weird things that happen in the movie, almost half of the stuff have nothing to do with the plot. I thought the weird stuff that happens was absolutely hilarious. I also need to mention that the movie marketed to look like that most of the movie is going to be in CGI when, in reality, it's only about 1/3 of the movie while the other 2/3 is hand drawn, which I'm always a big fan of hand drawn animation. But as for my whole view of the movie, I had a fun time. The jokes are clever and fun along with the animation giving some really funny sequences. It's definitely not one of the best animated films, but I still enjoyed myself. If you're a fan of Spongebob or like a good trippy comedy, I think you should check it out.

A very poor step down from the first movie
iratecartoons6 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Overall I did not enjoy this film that much, mostly because I was expecting it to be as good as the first movie and was left sorely disappointed.

This movie isn't terrible by any means, but it's certainly a step down from the original movie and almost everything about it is worse.

It's a good premise, but I just feel like a lot of potential here was wasted. The pacing is really weird, the plot is all over the place, going from point A to point B within a matter of seconds. The music is fit into the movie very weirdly. There's hardly any build-up and the characters just act kind of dumb. I know a lot of people will disagree with me here but I also felt it just wasn't that funny. Burger beard's character just felt very bizarre, and the whole time travelling aspect seemed really random. It feels like there's a little too much "magic" going on which somehow brings the story forward. I know SpongeBob has never been the most realistic show going but the whole thing with the book was very strange and made it seem like the writers didn't know how to progress the story without using it is a scapegoat(for example SpongeBob and the gang writing themselves to be massive musclemen - it's just strange...). Then there's the whole thing with the all-knowing dolphin, and again, it just takes the unrealistic aspect of it up to too much of a notch and seems like they're writing the plot as it goes along.

A few things I did like about this movie however was the animation(gorgeous, both the 2D and 3D aspects so basically the whole film). The music in this movie was decent(although the name-drop of Lil Wayne in the song "Squeeze Me" was pretty weird. All of the major characters actually play a role in this movie which is also nice. There's also quite a lot going on in the movie in general which will keep a lot of kids entertained, especially the scenes when they're out of water.

If you've never seen the first movie you may enjoy this more, but in context of that one this one really doesn't hold up, I'm disappointed to say. I wanted to like this one, I really did.

5 stars - Average. Not good but not bad either

Pros: Includes most of the major SpongeBob characters and they actually have purpose, the animation is stellar throughout the whole movie, there's a lot happening in it to entertain kids

Cons: The plot/pacing, the "magic" and time-travelling aspects, bizarre and not that funny.

Best acid trip ever
MattBrady09925 February 2015
Who known that a SpongeBob Movie produce by Nickelodeon film would actually turn out not as terrible as I thought it will just because of Nickelodeon track record of the last couple years.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is about a very important recipe goes missing, Spongebob jumps out of 2D and into our 3D world to retrieve it. But it's not going to be easy getting it back, as a scurvy pirate stands between Spongebob and the recipe.

I remember the time when Nickelodeon was the best with are favorite programs that we use to watch and enjoy the hell out of, but after a while when all the programs was getting cancelled one by one and Nickelodeon itself was getting watered down with endless bullsh*t that we didn't want, we already sawed what was coming for Nickelodeon and now it's now known as the dropping ground of uninspiring ideas of new TV shows that wouldn't even make it to season 2 or 3. Sponge was the same it stared off great that quickly turned bland and the same recycled jokes, and the trailer to the SpongeBob movie 2 looked like Nickelodeon was scraping the barrel, but to my surprise the movie wasn't all that bad.

Let's just call the movie of what it is and that's a love letter to SpongeBob fans, only true SpongeBobs fans that loved the show back in the day when it was good and more well thought out. All the voice actors from the show do make a return to the movie and they all do good in they roles and I really don't see anyone else replacing them, because they were born to play their character's. The animation was pretty good, now in the trailer you can see the live action 3D animation well that's actually a couple minutes long in the last part, the whole movie is the good old animation that we loved in the first place.

Antonio Banderas as the villain was surprisingly enjoyable. Now normally when big names actors do these kids movie just for money and nothing else, not even trying in they role, but here is totally different I mean was Antonio Banderas actually put effort in his character and that's why his character was a enjoyable and fun villain.

For problems these a couple like: Now I talked about Antonio Banderas villain and how enjoyable he was, but his story ark and his big plan I didn't really give a care about. If you're not a fan of SpongeBob please stay away from the movie, it's not going to change your mind about the show and all that.

Overall SpongeBob the Movie 2 was good time. The movie gived me that nostalgia feeling of the 1-3 seasons of SpongeBob, as I said before I love letter to the fans.

Spongebob Squarepants
kosmasp29 September 2015
Hopefully that song will not get stuck in your brain, after watching the movie. Though if you're watching this, chances are you already know what this will be about. And while I am not too familiar with the show itself, everybody knows Spongebob. Watching it as a kid or with kids (in my case it was my nephew), makes this more than worthwhile.

The plot is not complicated, but Banderas as an evil pirate seems like he wanted (or had to?) channel a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow. Like an evil brother or distant cousin or something like that. The effects are nice and the movie swings back and forth between the "real" world and the animated one. Just to merge both of them towards the end, adding a little bit of CGI to it for a good mixture. Decent movie, that is entertaining enough throughout (extras during the end credits)

Mad Sponge: Beyond The Shining Time Traveling Avengers should have been the title.
michaelhirakida6 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Burger Beard is a pirate who owns a pirate ship food truck who finds a storybook about Bikini Bottom on the island the show opens on. When he alters the story, making the formula for the Krabby Patty disappear, the world under the sea becomes a Mad Max like environment where everyone goes crazy and Spongebob and Plankton go back in time to get the formula back from disappearing. But when that backfires, the rest of the gang including Patrick, Squidward, Sandy and Mr. Krabs go up to the surface to find the formula and bring it back as superheros.

That sounds really stupid. But since it's a Spongebob movie, It's what I expected.

One of the biggest things I liked about this movie is that it is almost fully animated. The only time CGI is shown is in the third act. But It could have been better if they had more time on Spongebob and his friends exploring our world. It's rare that you see a mainstream 2D movie these days, but it is nice to see a movie that has this style of animation again.

The parodies are possibly the bigger problems of the movie. They parody Mad Max, which is the setting for a famine depression Bikini Bottom for some of the movie, The Shining, which is unnecessary and the Avengers which they barely have time to develop their superhero personas. Not only will kids not get these parodies, but they stick out like a extremely sore thumb to the audience who have seen these films before.

At above an hour and a half it is almost forgettable, but the voice acting, execution and jokes (most of them) are good and end up for a somewhat entertaining film. Kids will like this but adults will be mixed.

70/100
