This past weekend was a big one for superhero movies. Not in the sense that any of them actually opened in theaters (alas, we’re still stuck with Fantastic Four), but in the sense that a whole bunch of next year’s superhero movies have just wrapped shooting. But while the cast of Captain America: Civil War celebrated […]

Jimmy Kimmel is known for bringing laughs to late night, but he's also used his comedic talents to bring levity to a charity event that means a lot to him.
The talk show host, 47, has been attending the L.A. Loves Alex's Lemonade Culinary Cookout for the past five years, and he's also taken a turn as the fundraiser's emcee.
"I've had many relatives die of cancer," says Kimmel of his connection to Alex's Lemonade Stand, which helps raise money for childhood cancer research, "but it's really more about the possibility of that happening, and looking at being...

In the reader spotlight series we celebrate You, the reason The Film Experience keeps chugging along. Today we're talking to Michael Bina who just produced a well received short film! Let's meet him.
Nathaniel R: We met a couple years back at a guild screening for Coriolanus's tiny Oscar-qualifying run I believe?
Michael Bina: Yes, that’s right! I remember you... loved it?
Well, Vanessa Redgrave in it! Otherwise not so much. How long have you been reading the site?
I’ve probably been reading The Film Experience for a little less than a decade. I was a huge fan of the Academy Awards growing up, so I began reading Oscar blogs. I stumbled upon yours and loved your insight on films, and just the way you wrote about them. The site's great at showcasing all aspects of the industry (film, theatre, television).
I understand you recently produced a...

Tropfest has released the trailer to its 2013 festival, directed by last year’s winner, Alethea Jones.
The whimsical trailer tells the story of how the balloon, Tropfest’s signature item which must appear in every film entry, was first created.
Jones won last year with her film Lemonade Stand and has since made multiple trips to the Us, one as part of the Tropfest winner’s prize, where she has multiple irons in the fire including a debut feature film.
Following in a similar style to Lemonade Stand, the Tropfest trailer is a dark comedic story that mixes live action with animation.
Of the brief from Tropfest, Jones told Encore: “I was presented with a few ideas that had already been developed. One of which was the humble beginnings of the balloon. They already had the idea of a little girl who steals a balloon from the lab. And I...

Ashley Hebert and J.P. Rosenbaum's wedding registry has been revealed, and it's surprisingly modest!MyRegistry.com has "The Bachelorette" and her fiance's wishlist -- and it only contains 27 items. Four of the items are charities guests can donate to: Sos: Surgeons OverSeas, Action Against Hunger, Save the Children and Alex's Lemonade Stand. The rest of the items are mostly items for the kitchen: bakeware, china and the like. The couple seem to enjoy seafood; a crab craw cracker and lobster fork are on the list. The most expensive item? A $99.95 copper and stainless steel skillet. As modest as their registry is, their wedding will be a lavish, televised and paid-for affair. "The Bachelorette: Ashley and J.P.'s Wedding" will air in December on ABC. The special will feature their road to the altar, including Ashley's dress fitting and their bachelor and bachelorette parties. We're sure guests...

Over the past several months "Girls" creator Lena Dunham has proven herself a refreshingly atypical "It Girl." Funny, fearless and unafraid to put herself out there -- all out there -- physically without the benefit of soft filters or flattering lighting.
Which seems to be all well and good for an HBO show, but how dare she display that "I don't care" attitude in real life. This was proven over the weekend when she showed up an event for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation sporting her cute short hair and a rather modest outfit primarily featuring a long-sleeved teal blouse.
At a charity event! For heaven's sake, won't someone think of the children?
Immediately, the genie was released from the snark bottle and the digs began, most of them saying she had "forgotten" her pants and she really shouldn't have done so.
Reality check:
1. While her top is indeed longer than the shorts she's wearing underneath,...

When I was a kid, we didn’t have any actual videogame consoles in my house, which meant that my early years were spent playing floppy-disk games on our aging Macintosh computer. Most of these games reeked of stealth education: the math-inducing Number Munchers, the undersea non-adventure Odell Lake, the surreal fairy-tale romp Mixed-Up Mother Goose. (The lone exception to all the edutainment was Sid Meier’s Pirates, a very proto proto-Grand Theft Auto which still has the coolest videogame cover art ever.) At some point, my parents broke down and got me a Game Boy, and I spent almost...

Kirsten Vangsness has a pretty rad gig playing Penelope Garcia on CBS' hit show Criminal Minds. Now in its eighth season, the series has seen some cast members come in and out, but the out actress has been a mainstay and fan favorite. Penelope stays out of the show's blood and gore, though, and concentrates more on the technical sides of things, which Kirsten said she's quite Ok with.

"No, I don't want that at all!" she said at CBS' TCA party. "It's good! Because it means I usually stay [in L.A.] and I am making the movie I'm making and I have a play that's opening with my theater company, so it's nice. It's nice to do all the different things."
It's perfect, actually, because Kirsten is able to pursue her passion projects while also starring on a hit show. She's...
