Two of the three people who quote parts of "The New Colossus", by Emma Lazarus - the poem inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor - misquote her slightly: Brendan Gill refers to "huddled masses yearning to be free", while the poem says, ". . . breathe free"; the unseen narrator recites the entire poem, ending with, "I lift my light beside the golden door", while the poet wrote, "I lift my lamp beside the golden door"; only the Rev Dr Calvin O. Butts III, quoting the last five lines of the poem, is completely correct.
