The Release of Paper Moon
Getting the Moon (2003)
*** (out of 4)
The third featurette on the PAPER MOON DVD from Paramount goes over the release of the film. Peter Bogdanovich starts off talking about how he finished the film and got the first preview ready in three weeks. We hear about the studio doing one hundred sneak previews across the country and the director adds that while people loved it and it was a hit not all of the critics agreed. Bogdanovich then talks about how disappointed he was that he, Ryan O'Neil and cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs weren't nominated for Oscars and he adds that he refused to go because of it (which is probably why so many people can't stand him but I remain a fan). From here he talks about how proud he was of Tatum and then we get a few comments from Kovacs and Polly Platt. At just around six-minutes there's certainly not enough here to pack any real punch but as always it's fun for fans of the film to hear these comments. At least Bogdanovich was honest about saying why he didn't go to the Oscars, although it still looks like he and Ryan would have gone to support Tatum.
