After enjoying the pilot episode I was pleased to hear that there would be further episodes; this opening part got the new series off to a flying start. Gently and his partner MacDuff have been hired by a man who is convinced that the Pentagon want him dead; they believe he is just paranoid but are happy to take his money till they find him dead. With their erstwhile employer dead Gently continues the case hoping to get the reward being offered for help in securing a conviction. While working on the case an apparently more mundane case comes their way; a woman wants to know if her husband is having an affair. It turns out he is but he has an excuse; his horoscope predicted he would! Gently is convinced that his horoscope predict his affair but became true because he believed it enough to make it come true.
I really enjoyed this opening episode; Gently is a real antidote to all the logical TV detectives like Holmes; his methods are almost the opposite, relying on coincidence to solve the case. As well as an enjoyable mystery there were plenty of laughs to be had and I loved his concept of 'Zen Navigation' which suggested when you are lost you should just follow somebody who appears to know where they are going! Stephen Mangan was great in the title role and Darren Boyd good too in the role of MacDuff. After this I'm certainly looking forward to further episode; it is just a shame that the series is only three episodes long.
