Second Time Around

Warning: Spoilers
In this initial Episode we are introduced to the somewhat convoluted lives and world of these Yorkshire folk, as they attempt to cope with whatever is thrown in their paths.

Our two principle characters are living their current lives with something of an extended family, in and around their daughters abodes.

Gillian's husband Kenneth has long since passed away and now, she resides in a Granny pad adjacent to her daughter Carolines family home. A rather large house that Caroline now shares, with her two sons the youngest Lawrence and William, who are both pupils at their mums school.

The father and spouse John having disgraced himself with a girlfriend Judith, has effectively displaced himself from his family home. Something of John's character or rather lack of it is seen when he crawls back home, craving Caroline's forgiveness for his stupidity and begging to be able to start again. Caroline against her better judgement and any shred of common sense, decides to let him stay in the spare bedroom.

Caroline is the Head Mistress of a prestigious school and has had a relationship with Kate a teacher at the same school, Caroline feels the need to tell Kate about John and of her personal uncertainty towards her.

Alan has long since rented out his house and moved into his daughter Gillian's farm to help her out financially, where they live with Alan's grandson and Gillian's son Raff. Gillian runs the farm but to make ends meet has to also work at a local supermarket.

Through this episode we begin to view strands of Gillian's tortuous family, love life and existence thus far.

Gillian's spouse Eddie and Raff's dad has previously died, his brother Robbie a local copper is still having a difficult relationship with Gillian.

Gillian is also seen to share something with, a what certainly seems like a local ne'er-do-well Paul.

Both of our romeos Celia and Allan are far from being silver surfers, Celia's grandsons Lawrence and William have set her up on Facebook. Allan's grandson Raff having done the same for him.

Celia and Allan manage to make their initial contact online, and it certainly appears remotely possible that their paths may have crossed many moons ago. They agree to meet up and decide on the location, date and time, all well and good, but matters don't exactly turn out smoothly thereafter.

In their discussions together Celia and Allan can't help but reminisce about times long past, and indulge in pointless speculation. Of what if's concerning what could have occurred, over what actually happened in their respective lives.

Both of the couples daughters learn of their mums predicament and drive to collect their respective parents, at the romeos rendezvous point.

Gillian having to share her journey with son Raff who has been told something disturbing, about his dads death by his uncle Robbie.

Caroline has to contend in her drive there with annoying news from Kate, about something she has told to someone called Michael Dobson.

Both daughters moods are not exactly enhanced by the manner of their arrival clashing in the carpark, they both burst into the pub to locate their respective parents. Everyone then discover what each consider as unfortunate news, to be topped up by what all concerned feel as a body blow. Which turns out to be of our long lost romeos Gillian and Allan, announcing their impending nuptials.

Wonderfully Crafted Movie

Warning: Spoilers
This is a wonderful movie, with a superb cast, and an excellent storyline. The love story between Alan and Celia takes you on a journey; a trip that you want to stay on forever. The characterizations are spot on, and it is too bad that this is not a series as this cast of characters was amazing. Sarah Lancashire as Caroline is brilliant. She has reached midlife and has decided that she will pursue a relationship with a woman. She is bold in her desire and resolute in her choice, as in maturity she has reached the point of acceptance. The dilemma is her Mother's reaction which is expected, however not accepted. How her traditional Mother resolves her reluctance to accept her daughter's choice and save her relationship deserves high praise. Emotional, personal and familial, a story so wonderfully crafted that it is viewable over and over again.
